Chapter 3: The Night Sarah Really Died

The words echoed through my bedroom.

Activate the second plan.

I lunged toward Bennett, but he slipped into the passage and slammed a metal door between us.

I grabbed the handle.

Locked.

“OPEN IT!””

Nothing.

I pounded against the metal until my knuckles hurt.

Behind me, Melissa was sobbing.

Lily had buried her face against my chest.

“Daddy, he's coming back.””

I turned.

“Who, sweetheart?””

“The doctor.””

I crouched beside her.

“Did he hurt you?””

She nodded.

Then she pointed toward the wall.

“He gives Mommy medicine when she says she wants to tell you.””

I looked at Melissa.

Her face crumpled.

“What medicine?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Melissa!””

“Sleeping pills. He said they would help me calm down.””

I stared at her.

“You've been drugging yourself?””

“He told me it was the only way to keep Lily safe.””

I stood slowly.

“Start talking. From the beginning.””

Melissa walked to the bedroom door and locked it.

Then she sat on the edge of our bed, pressing both hands against her knees.

“Five years ago, Sarah called me from the car.””

I remembered that night.

A rainy Tuesday.

Sarah had been driving home from a prenatal appointment.

I'd been at a business conference two hours away.

At 8:42 p.m., my phone rang.

I missed it.

At 8:46, the hospital called.

By 9:15, I'd been told she was dead.

Melissa looked at me.

“She wasn't alone when the accident happened.””

My chest tightened.

“Who was with her?””

“Bennett.””

I shook my head.

“He was her doctor.””

“He had asked her to meet him privately.””

“Why?””

Melissa swallowed.

“Because Sarah had discovered something about her medical records.””

She reached into the bedside drawer and pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept these.””

Inside were several photocopied pages.

I recognized Sarah's handwriting on the first sheet.

Melissa, if anything happens to me, please make sure Ryan knows the truth. Don't let Bennett take our baby.

My vision blurred.

I read it again.

Then again.

“What truth?””

Melissa pulled another paper from the envelope.

It was a medical report dated six weeks before the accident.

There were unusual entries concerning blood samples, prenatal testing, and a series of appointments Sarah had never mentioned.

At the bottom was Bennett's signature.

“What am I looking at?””

“Sarah found out that Bennett had been altering patient records.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with our daughter?””

Melissa took a shaky breath.

“He was selling private medical information to wealthy clients. He was also involved in illegal adoption arrangements.””

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting on the floor, carefully holding the blanket around her shoulders.

Melissa continued.

“Sarah discovered that he had listed her unborn baby as a stillbirth before the baby was even delivered.””

My stomach twisted.

“He planned to steal her?””

Melissa nodded.

“He had arranged for a couple to adopt the baby privately. When Sarah refused, he threatened her.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“She tried.””

I froze.

“What?””

Melissa pulled out another sheet.

It was a printed email.

The recipient was my old work address.

The date was two days before the accident.

I recognized the subject line.

We need to talk about the baby.

I remembered that email.

I had never opened it.

I'd been preparing for a major business presentation and had promised Sarah I'd read it when I got home.

I never got the chance.

My hands began shaking.

“Why did you have this?””

“Sarah forwarded it to me after you didn't respond.””

I looked at Melissa.

“Why didn't you give it to me after the accident?””

She started crying.

“Because Bennett came to the hospital before you arrived. He told me Sarah had died and the baby hadn't survived. Then he showed me documents saying you had signed consent for the baby's remains to be transferred.””

“I never signed anything!””

“I know that now.””

“Now?””

Melissa looked away.

I stepped toward her.

“What happened that night?””

She took a long breath.

“Bennett told me the baby had a rare medical condition. He said she wouldn't survive without expensive treatment. He offered to arrange everything privately.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was twenty-six. Sarah was dead. I was terrified.””

“You were an adult, Melissa!””

“I know!””

Her voice cracked.

“He told me that if I contacted you, you'd be arrested for fraud. He said Sarah had falsified the pregnancy records and that the baby wasn't yours.””

I shook my head.

“So you helped him?””

“I thought I was protecting Lily.””

I stared at her.

“By hiding her inside our wall?””

Melissa covered her face.

“Not at first.””

I waited.

She finally looked up.

“When I married you, Lily was living with me in a rented apartment. I told you I had a niece who had moved overseas. I thought Bennett had disappeared.””

My blood ran cold.

“You brought her into this house?””

She nodded.

“Six months ago, Bennett found us.””

“What did he want?””

“He wanted Lily's original medical records. He said someone had started investigating the adoption scheme. He threatened to expose everything and take her.””

I looked toward the closet.

“So you built a hiding place?””

“Bennett had access to the house. He knew where Lily slept. I thought the wall would keep her safe.””

I stared at my wife.

“You made a little girl live in a dark box.””

“I gave her food.””

“You gave her scraps through a hole!””

Melissa began shaking uncontrollably.

“I know.””

For a moment, the only sound was Lily's quiet breathing.

Then Emma appeared in the doorway.

She was holding a stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“Sweetheart, I told you to stay in the living room.””

She looked at Melissa.

“Mommy, is the doctor coming back?””

Melissa went completely still.

“Why would you ask that?””

Emma clutched the rabbit.

“Because he came yesterday when you were sleeping.””

I felt my blood turn to ice.

“What did he do?””

Emma pointed toward the bedroom window.

“He put something under the flowerpot.””

I crossed the room and lifted the pot.

Beneath it was a small black envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Sarah standing outside a hospital, holding newborn Lily.

On the back, someone had written:

*THE BABY WAS NEVER THE ONLY SECRET. ASK MELISSA WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ORIGINAL ACCIDENT REPORT.*

I turned toward my wife.

Her expression changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Melissa,” I whispered.

“What happened to the accident report?””

She began backing away.

“Ryan, you have to understand—”

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Then the front door opened.

A man's voice called through the house.

“Melissa? It's me. I've brought what you asked for.””

Melissa looked at me in terror.

I recognized the voice.

It belonged to my father.

And when he stepped into the bedroom holding a leather folder, he looked directly at Lily and said:

“I'm sorry, son. But that little girl should never have been born.””
