Chapter 8: My Mother Was Behind the Wheel

I couldn't understand what she'd said.

My mother had always told me she'd spent that night at home.

She'd called me from the hospital after Sarah's death, crying so hard that I could barely understand her words.

She'd hugged me at the funeral.

She'd stood beside me while I lowered my wife's coffin into the ground.

And now she was telling me she'd been driving the car that hit Sarah.

“Mom,” I whispered.

“Tell me that's not true.””

She covered her mouth.

“I never wanted her to die.””

My father immediately stepped forward.

“That's enough, Eleanor.””

I turned toward him.

“Don't you dare tell her what to say.””

My mother began speaking.

“That night, Arthur called me. He said Sarah had stolen confidential documents from the clinic. He told me she was going to destroy everything we'd built.””

“What did you do?””

“I went to find her.””

“Why?””

“To talk.””

“Talk about what?””

She looked down.

“The babies.””

I felt sick.

She continued.

“Sarah was standing beside her car near the old hospital road. She had a folder in her hand. She told me she was going to the police.””

“And then?””

My mother started crying.

“I tried to take the folder. She refused. We argued.””

“Did you hit her?””

“No. I didn't touch her.””

“Then how did the accident happen?””

My father interrupted.

“Eleanor, stop talking.””

She turned toward him.

“You've made me carry this for five years!””

Bennett moved toward the front door.

I blocked his path.

“Stay where you are.””

My mother took a shaky breath.

“I got into my car. Sarah stepped behind it. I was furious. I reversed too quickly.””

The words came slowly.

“I heard a terrible sound.””

My stomach twisted.

“She was on the ground.””

“Was she alive?””

My mother nodded.

“She was breathing.””

I backed away.

“Then why did you leave her?””

“I panicked.””

“You left my pregnant wife lying in the road?””

“I called Arthur!””

“You should have called an ambulance!””

“I know!””

Her scream echoed through the hallway.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then she added something even worse.

“Arthur told me to wait. He said Bennett would handle everything.””

I turned toward my father.

“You arrived?””

He nodded.

“And you knew she was alive?””

“I was told she was critically injured.””

“Did you take her to the hospital?””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“What did you do?””

He looked away.

“Bennett arranged for her to be transported.””

“Where?””

My mother whispered, “The private clinic.””

I felt my legs weaken.

Sarah hadn't died in the road.

She hadn't died in a hospital.

She'd been taken somewhere else.

“Did she die there?””

My father didn't answer.

Bennett finally spoke.

“Ryan, the accident caused severe internal injuries. We attempted to stabilize her.””

“Attempted?””

He looked at me.

“She died shortly after delivery.””

I stepped toward him.

“You told me she died in a hospital.””

“She was transferred to a medical facility.””

“Why did you hide it?””

“Because the investigation would have exposed the research program.””

My mother began sobbing.

I turned toward her.

“And the twins?””

“Lily was taken to a neonatal unit. Grace was transferred to a private residence.””

“Who authorized it?””

My father raised his chin.

“I did.””

I stared at him.

“You stole my children before I even knew they existed.””

“They were safer with us.””

“Lily was starving!””

He didn't respond.

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from the hospital.

*Lily's condition is stable. She is asking for you.*

I closed my eyes briefly.

At least one of my daughters was safe.

Then another message arrived.

It was from Dr. Evelyn Carter.

*Ryan, I found Sarah's original recording. I'm sending it to you now. Don't trust your parents. There is something on it about the person who ordered the accident.*

An audio file appeared.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Sarah's voice.

Weak.

Frightened.

But unmistakably hers.

Ryan, if you're hearing this, I may not be alive. I need you to know that I never agreed to the program. Your father told me he wanted to help us have a family, but he lied.

I felt tears running down my cheeks.

The recording continued.

He told me the twins would be used for a private genetic project. He said the children would belong to the company until they turned eighteen. I refused. I told him I'd expose everything.

There was a pause.

Then Sarah whispered:

But there's something else. Ryan, your father isn't the only person involved.

A door slammed somewhere in the background of the recording.

Sarah's voice became frantic.

If anything happens to me, look for the blue ledger. The real payments are recorded there. And whatever you do, don't trust—

The audio cut off.

I replayed the final seconds.

Don't trust who?

I looked at my father.

He was staring at my phone.

For the first time, he looked genuinely frightened.

Then Melissa suddenly spoke.

“The blue ledger.””

I turned.

“Do you know where it is?””

She nodded.

“Sarah gave it to me before the accident. I hid it in the house.””

“Where?””

Melissa looked toward my father.

“Under the floorboards in the nursery.””

My father lunged toward her.

I caught him by the shoulder.

He struggled.

“Let go of me!””

“Not until you tell me who ordered the accident!””

He looked at me with pure hatred.

“You think you're ready for the truth?””

I shoved him backward.

“Try me.””

He straightened his jacket.

Then he said:

“Your mother was driving that night, but she wasn't the person who told her to run Sarah off the road.””

My blood turned cold.

“Who was?””

He glanced toward Melissa.

May you like

“Ask your wife.””

Melissa began screaming.
