Chapter 5: The Woman He Married Before Me

I didn't sleep that night.

At 7:15 the following morning, I drove to a coffee shop downtown and met Caroline Whitmore.

She was sitting in the corner booth, wearing a gray coat and holding a paper cup with both hands.

She looked nothing like the woman I had imagined.

She was in her early forties, with dark hair pulled into a loose ponytail and tired eyes.

When I approached, she stood.

"Emily?""

I nodded.

She studied my face.

"You look like your mother.""

I sat opposite her.

"How did you know my mother?""

Caroline opened her handbag and removed a photograph.

It showed her holding a little girl in front of a Christmas tree.

"That's my daughter, Sophie. She's seven.""

I looked at the child's face.

Then I looked at Caroline.

"Daniel's daughter?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

"Does he know?""

"He knows. He just doesn't like acknowledging it.""

She took a breath.

"Daniel and I married when I was twenty-nine. We were together for almost five years. He was charming in the beginning.

Generous. Ambitious. The kind of man who remembered every little thing you said.""

I looked down at my coffee.

I knew that man.

Caroline continued.

"When I became pregnant, he changed. He started asking about my savings, my parents' property, and the inheritance I'd received from my grandmother.""

My fingers tightened around the cup.

"What happened?""

"He convinced me to sign financial documents. He said he was protecting our future. Then I discovered he'd opened accounts using my information.""

"Did you report him?""

"I tried. But by then, he'd moved money through several accounts, and he convinced everyone I was confused after giving birth.""

She slid a folder across the table.

Inside were copies of bank transfers, legal correspondence, and a divorce filing.

"Daniel told me he was divorced before he met you," she said.

"But the truth is that our divorce wasn't finalized until two years after your supposed courthouse wedding.""

I stared at the dates.

Four years ago, Daniel had filed a marriage application with my name while he was still legally married to Caroline.

"How could he do that?""

"Someone helped him.""

"Who?""

Caroline hesitated.

Then she placed another photograph on the table.

My mother.

Standing outside a bank with Daniel.

The date was printed on the back.

"Your mother discovered what he was doing," Caroline explained.

"She contacted me after she found my name in his financial records.""

I felt tears gathering.

"Mom knew you?""

"Yes. She apologized to me.""

"For what?""

Caroline looked toward the window.

"She said she'd made a terrible mistake. She'd helped Daniel obtain access to your accounts because she believed he was going to protect you.""

My stomach tightened.

"She signed the authorization?""

"Initially, yes. She thought she was helping you establish financial security. But when she discovered he was using your information to conceal his previous marriage and move money, she tried to stop him.""

I remembered the letter.

I made a mistake.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She was afraid.""

"Of Daniel?""

Caroline nodded.

"He threatened to expose something about Brianna.""

I sat back.

"What does my sister have to do with any of this?""

Caroline looked uncomfortable.

"Your mother told me Brianna had been receiving money from Daniel for years.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible. Brianna was always struggling financially.""

"That's what everyone believed.""

Caroline opened another folder.

Inside were bank statements showing regular transfers to an account under Brianna's name.

Some payments were small.

Others were several thousand dollars.

The oldest transfer was dated five years earlier.

Before Daniel and I got engaged.

"Why was he paying her?""

Caroline looked directly at me.

"Because Brianna was helping him.""

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

"Helping him do what?""

"Find out about your finances. Your inheritance. Your mother's estate.""

I stood so quickly that the table shook.

"No.""

Caroline reached for my hand.

"Emily, I know you love your sister. But she wasn't an innocent bystander.""

I pulled away.

"She's my little sister.""

"And Daniel knew exactly how to use that.""

I looked at the photographs again.

My mother.

Caroline.

Daniel.

All connected long before I knew there was anything to fear.

Then Caroline took out a small USB drive.

"Your mother gave me this two weeks before she died.""

I stared at it.

"What's on it?""

"An audio recording.""

"Of what?""

Caroline's eyes filled.

"Your mother confronting Brianna.""

My heart started racing.

"Why didn't you give it to me earlier?""

"Because your mother made me promise to wait until Daniel arranged the second wedding.""

I frowned.

"The second wedding?""

Caroline nodded.

"She believed he would eventually try to replace you with Brianna.""

My hands went cold.

"Why?""

Caroline leaned forward.

"Because your sister wasn't just his new bride, Emily.""

She paused.

"She was the person he intended to use to take control of everything your mother left you.""

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

It was Margaret.

"Emily, where are you?""

"With Caroline.""

Margaret went quiet.

May you like

Then she said something that made me grab the edge of the table.

"Don't go to your sister's apartment. Daniel is already there, and he's trying to get her to sign something.""
