Chapter 12: The Secret Behind Our Names

Nobody spoke.

I stared at Brianna.

"What did you just say?""

She was crying now, but she didn't look away.

"When I was little, Mom told me something. I thought it was a nightmare. I thought I'd made it up.""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Brianna, not now.""

"Yes, Grandma. Now.""

She turned toward me.

"Emily, Daniel once told me that our father wasn't really our father.""

I felt the room tilt.

"What?""

"He said Dad adopted me. He said Mom had another relationship before she married him.""

I shook my head.

"That's not true.""

Brianna looked at Eleanor.

"Is it?""

My grandmother sat down.

For several seconds, she didn't speak.

Then she opened the final folder from the safe.

Inside were two birth certificates.

One belonged to me.

The other belonged to Brianna.

I compared them.

My father's name was listed on both.

But Brianna's certificate had been amended.

There was a second page attached.

It was an adoption record.

My sister began trembling.

"Grandma?""

Eleanor held the paper.

"Your mother gave birth to you, Brianna. But your biological father was someone else.""

Brianna looked as though she'd been struck.

"Who?""

Eleanor glanced toward the front door.

Then she said the name.

"Richard Whitmore.""

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel's father.

Brianna's biological father was the same man who had spent twenty years threatening our family.

Brianna backed away.

"No. That's impossible.""

Eleanor continued.

"Your mother was very young. Richard was married, wealthy, and powerful. He promised to take care of her. When she became pregnant, he denied the child was his.""

Brianna covered her face.

"Why didn't Mom tell me?""

"Because she wanted you to grow up as your father's daughter. He loved you as his own, and he never treated you differently.""

I looked at the adoption record.

Our father had legally adopted Brianna when she was two.

The man I'd spent my entire life remembering as Dad had chosen her.

He'd raised her.

Protected her.

Loved her.

And she had spent the last two years helping Daniel, the son of the man who had destroyed our family.

Brianna sank onto the couch.

"Daniel knew?""

Eleanor nodded.

"He found out through Richard's private records. That's how he manipulated you.""

I thought about the wedding dress.

The altered measurements.

The secret booking.

The money.

Suddenly, the entire plan looked even more calculated.

Daniel hadn't simply chosen my sister because he was attracted to her.

He had chosen her because she was Richard's biological daughter.

Through Brianna, he could claim a connection to the Carter family and gain access to the inheritance.

But there was another question.

"Why did Mom leave the trust to someone else?""

Eleanor looked at me.

"Because the trust was created to protect the family from Richard's claims. Your mother made sure neither Daniel nor Brianna could inherit it through marriage.""

I frowned.

"Then who is the beneficiary?""

My grandmother opened a final envelope.

Inside was a notarized document.

The beneficiary was listed as:

*The Eleanor Carter Family Protection Trust.*

Beneath it was a handwritten instruction.

Upon Eleanor's death or permanent incapacity, all assets shall be transferred to Emily Carter, provided she remains unmarried to Daniel Whitmore.

I stared at the final clause.

"That's why he needed the wedding.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Your mother knew Daniel would eventually try to marry you. She also knew he might use Brianna if his first plan failed.""

Outside, Daniel knocked again.

"Emily! I know you're inside!""

Brianna stood.

"I'm going to talk to him.""

I grabbed her arm.

"Absolutely not.""

"He needs to know I know.""

"That's exactly why you shouldn't go near him.""

But Brianna was already moving toward the hallway.

I followed.

Daniel stood on the porch, holding a thick envelope.

When he saw Brianna, he smiled.

"There you are, sweetheart.""

She didn't return the smile.

"Don't call me that.""

His expression changed.

He looked past her and saw Eleanor.

Then he noticed the open folder on the table.

His face hardened.

"You found it.""

I stepped forward.

"Yes. We found everything.""

Daniel sighed.

"Emily, I can explain.""

"Don't.""

He raised the envelope.

"This is your father's release agreement. Sign the trust transfer, and he'll be returned safely.""

Brianna looked at him.

"You knew Richard was my biological father.""

Daniel didn't deny it.

"Your father was a complicated man.""

"He's dead!""

"Your biological father is dead," Daniel replied.

"But his business partners aren't.""

Brianna slapped him.

The sound echoed across the porch.

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

I stepped between them.

"Let her go.""

He released her and looked at me.

"You really think your mother protected you? She built a cage around that money and called it an inheritance.""

I held his stare.

"At least she didn't steal it.""

He smiled.

Then he pulled a document from the envelope.

"There's something you haven't seen.""

He placed it on the porch railing.

It was a notarized declaration dated three months earlier.

The document stated that Eleanor Carter had voluntarily transferred her entire trust to a new administrator.

I read the name.

Ruth Bennett.

My grandmother's caregiver.

The same woman who had disappeared from the farmhouse.

At the bottom was Eleanor's signature.

I looked at my grandmother.

"Did you sign this?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Daniel smiled.

"Then I suppose we have a problem.""

He pointed to the second page.

A medical evaluation.

It declared Eleanor mentally incompetent to manage her affairs.

And the doctor who signed it was none other than the physician who had certified my mother’s death.

I looked at Daniel.

"Who is this doctor?""

He leaned closer.

"The man who has been helping your family for twenty years.""

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And suddenly, his smile disappeared.

"What do you mean she's gone?""

A pause.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Where is Ruth?""

I didn't answer.

He lowered the phone.

For the first time, Daniel looked frightened.

Because whoever had called him had just revealed something neither of us expected.

Ruth hadn't disappeared.

She had taken the original trust documents.

And she was on her way to the police—with evidence that could send every Whitmore involved in the scheme to prison.
