Chapter 11: The Father Behind the Locked Door
I wanted to run outside.
I wanted to grab Thomas by the collar and demand to know where my father was.
But Eleanor held my wrist with surprising strength.
"Listen to me, Emily. That's exactly what he wants.""
I looked at the photograph again.
My father was alive.
After twenty years of believing otherwise, I could see his face.
His gray hair.
The scar above his eyebrow.
The same hands that used to lift me onto his shoulders.
I couldn't think about anything else.
Brianna stood beside the window.
"We have to call the police.""
Thomas heard her.
He smiled.
"Go ahead. By the time they arrive, your father will be gone.""
He stepped away from the porch and returned to his car.
I grabbed my phone.
No signal.
Brianna checked hers.
"Nothing.""
Eleanor closed the curtains.
"There's a landline in the study.""
We hurried inside.
I dialed 911.
A dispatcher answered, but before I could explain, the line crackled and went dead.
Brianna stared at me.
"Someone cut the telephone line.""
I looked at Eleanor.
"How do we find him?""
She opened the safe again and removed a folded map.
It showed several properties around Asheville.
One location was circled in red.
"The old Whitmore warehouse.""
I studied the map.
"Is that where Dad was taken?""
"Possibly. Richard used that property before he disappeared.""
Brianna looked horrified.
"Why didn't you tell us any of this before?""
Eleanor's eyes filled.
"Because your mother begged me to let you grow up without fear.""
I couldn't hold back anymore.
"Mom died believing Dad was gone. I spent twenty years thinking I was an orphan. And now someone is threatening to kill him because of money?""
My grandmother reached for my hand.
"I am sorry.""
I pulled away.
"Sorry doesn't bring back twenty years.""
The room fell silent.
Then Brianna noticed something beneath the desk.
A small recorder.
She picked it up.
"What's this?""
Eleanor recognized it.
"Your mother left that here.""
Brianna pressed play.
A man's voice filled the room.
"Thomas, the trust cannot be released without Eleanor's signature.""
Another voice answered.
"What about the girls?""
"They're irrelevant until the transfer is completed.""
I recognized the first voice.
Daniel.
The second belonged to Thomas.
The recording continued.
"Once Emily signs the property transfer, we can move the remaining assets. Brianna will receive the wedding documents, and nobody will question the family arrangement.""
Brianna covered her mouth.
Then Daniel spoke again.
"And what happens to Caroline?""
Thomas laughed.
"She already knows too much.""
The recording stopped.
I looked at Brianna.
"Your wedding wasn't the end of the plan.""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"It was supposed to give Daniel legal access to the family.""
Brianna began crying.
"I didn't know.""
I wanted to believe her.
But there were too many lies between us.
Then the recorder clicked again.
A different voice spoke.
My father's.
"Emily, if you ever hear this, please understand something. I didn't disappear because I wanted to leave you.""
I stopped breathing.
"Your mother and I discovered that Richard had been using the family business to hide stolen money. We found evidence that connected him to several criminal accounts.""
My eyes filled.
"Richard threatened your mother. He threatened you. I agreed to disappear because I believed it would keep you safe.""
There was a pause.
Then Dad continued.
"But someone inside our family helped him.""
Eleanor looked down.
"Someone who had access to every document, every account, and every family secret.""
The recording ended.
I turned toward my grandmother.
"Who?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into her cardigan and removed a small photograph.
It showed my mother, my father, Eleanor, and a young woman standing outside the farmhouse.
The young woman was Ruth.
But there was another person in the photograph.
A teenage girl standing beside her.
I recognized her immediately.
Brianna.
My sister looked at the photograph.
"I was there?""
Eleanor nodded.
"You were twelve. You witnessed something that night.""
Brianna's face went blank.
"I don't remember.""
My grandmother held her hand.
"Your mother took you away before you could understand what was happening.""
I stared at the photograph.
Then I noticed something written on the back.
The night Brianna saw her father leave.
I looked at my sister.
"What does that mean?""
Brianna began shaking.
"I don't know.""
Eleanor whispered, "Your father was never the man you believed he was, Brianna.""
Before anyone could respond, headlights swept across the curtains.
A vehicle stopped outside.
Then a familiar voice called from the porch.
"Emily! It's Daniel. Open the door!""
I looked at Brianna.
She stepped away from the window.
May you like
And for the first time, she said something I never expected.
"Don't let him in. I think Daniel knows who our real father is.""
