Chapter 13: The Third Name on My Father's Patent

The patent examiner's email arrived at 7:16 the following morning.

Michael called me before I'd finished my coffee.

"Daniel, you need to come to the office immediately.""

"What happened?""

"They've located the original supplemental application.""

"And?""

"There's a third inventor listed.""

I sat up.

"Who?""

Michael paused.

"Your father. You. And someone named Thomas Whitmore.""

I nearly dropped my phone.

"Thomas Whitmore? Richard's father?""

"Apparently. He filed a supporting declaration eight years ago, acknowledging that your father developed the original technology independently.""

I stared at the kitchen wall.

Another Whitmore.

Another connection to my father's invention.

"Why wasn't his name on the original patent?""

"That's what we're trying to establish. The supplemental application identifies him as a technical witness, not a co-owner. But the transfer request submitted by Alexander claims he was a joint inventor.""

I grabbed my jacket.

"Could Alexander use that to claim ownership?""

"Not without evidence. But we need the original declaration.""

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting across from Michael with Laura beside him.

She had brought a forensic report on the documents recovered from my father's workshop.

"There's something interesting," she said.

She placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a handwritten diagram with three sets of initials.

T.C.

D.C.

T.W.

"Your father, you, and Thomas Whitmore," she explained.

"The technical records suggest Thomas helped fund some early testing, but the engineering work was performed by your father and you.""

I frowned.

"Why would Thomas acknowledge that?""

Laura opened another file.

"Because he and your father were friends.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"According to archived correspondence, Thomas Whitmore and your father worked together years before Richard founded the current company. Thomas was an engineer before becoming an investor.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Daniel, your father and Thomas may have developed the first prototype together. But Thomas apparently signed away any ownership claim in exchange for repayment of his original investment.""

I examined the document.

The signature was genuine.

The date was eight years old.

And at the bottom was a handwritten sentence.

All intellectual property rights remain with Thomas Carter and Daniel Carter.

My father had protected my ownership long before I understood what patents were.

Then Laura showed me another document.

A letter from Thomas Whitmore to my father.

Tom,

Richard doesn't understand what we've built. He sees only the money. I know you want Daniel to inherit something meaningful, and I respect that.

I've signed the declaration. Your son's contribution belongs in the record.

If anyone challenges your ownership, call me.

Thomas.

I sat back.

"Did Richard know about this?""

Laura nodded.

"Yes. He received a copy after his father's death.""

"So he knew my father had retained ownership.""

"Correct.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Then why did they keep trying to steal it?""

Michael answered.

"Because Alexander believes he can overturn the original agreement by presenting himself as Thomas Carter's other biological son.""

I stared at him.

"But he isn't.""

"He's your father's biological son, yes. But that doesn't automatically make him an inventor or patent owner.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Richard.

*I need to see you. I have something that belonged to my father.*

I forwarded it to Michael.

He nodded.

"Let's hear him out.""

An hour later, Richard arrived carrying a leather briefcase.

He looked tired.

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed my father and Thomas Whitmore standing beside the first battery-cooling prototype.

Both men were smiling.

On the back, someone had written:

The beginning of something extraordinary.

Richard opened his briefcase.

"My father left me a sealed letter. I found it while reviewing his personal papers.""

He handed it to Michael.

The letter was addressed to Richard.

Richard,

If you're reading this, I am no longer here to explain what happened.

Thomas Carter is an honest man. His son Daniel helped him build something remarkable. I witnessed their work and signed the documents confirming their ownership.

Do not allow Alexander to turn this invention into a family weapon.

The technology belongs to the people who created it. Not to the people who happen to carry our last names.

If you ever have to choose between your company's reputation and the truth, choose the truth.

Father.

Richard lowered his head.

"I should have listened.""

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you?""

He took a long breath.

"Because Alexander was angry. He believed his grandfather had favored you and your father over him. I thought giving him control of the technology would make him feel valued.""

"And instead, you helped him steal it.""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

I stared at the letter.

"Do you have the original?""

"At home. This is a certified copy.""

Michael examined it.

"This could help establish the historical ownership. But we still need to respond to Alexander's transfer request.""

Richard looked at me.

"I will provide a sworn statement and every company record you need.""

I nodded.

"Then do it.""

Richard stood.

"Daniel, I know I can't undo what happened. But I want to ask you something.""

"What?""

"Please don't let Alexander destroy himself over this.""

I looked at him.

"That's not my responsibility.""

Richard nodded sadly.

"I understand.""

After he left, Michael began preparing the response.

Then Laura received a call.

She listened for several seconds before turning toward us.

"Alexander has scheduled a press conference.""

Michael frowned.

"When?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

"About what?""

Laura looked at me.

"He's announcing that Whitmore Technologies has acquired the original Carter battery technology.""

I stood.

"He's announcing an acquisition that hasn't happened?""

"Apparently, yes.""

Michael immediately picked up his phone.

"We need an emergency injunction.""

But Laura wasn't finished.

"There's another detail. He's also announcing a new research director.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

"Olivia Parker.""

I stared at her.

"She's already cooperating with our investigation.""

"Apparently Alexander has offered her a new contract.""

Michael shook his head.

"That's impossible. She signed a cooperation agreement yesterday.""

I reached for my phone.

Olivia wasn't answering.

I tried again.

Nothing.

Then a news notification appeared.

*WHITMORE TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES $38 MILLION ACQUISITION OF BREAKTHROUGH BATTERY TECHNOLOGY.*

Below the headline was a photograph of Alexander standing beside Olivia.

They were smiling.

And Olivia was holding a document bearing my father's name.

I opened the article.

The final paragraph contained a statement from Alexander.

Our company is pleased to confirm that the original technology has been secured through a legitimate transfer of rights.

I looked at Michael.

"Where did he get that document?""

Michael enlarged the photograph.

His face went pale.

"Daniel, that's the second patent application.""

I stood.

"He has the original?""

Michael nodded.

"And if he has the signed original, he may have obtained it before we recovered the workshop documents.""

My phone vibrated.

An incoming call.

Olivia.

I answered.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Daniel, I'm sorry.""

"Where are you?""

"At Whitmore headquarters.""

"Why are you standing beside Alexander?""

She began crying.

"Because he has something I need.""

"What?""

There was a pause.

Then she whispered:

"The original recording of my doctoral defense. He says if I don't cooperate, he'll release it and expose what happened during my examination.""

I closed my eyes.

"What happened during your defense, Olivia?""

May you like

Her answer changed everything.

"Alexander gave me the answers.""
