Chapter 10: The Son Nobody Knew About

I read Eleanor's message three times.

Alexander Whitmore wasn't Richard's biological son.

My father knew who his real father was.

For several seconds, I couldn't connect those words to anything that made sense.

Michael took my phone and read the message himself.

"Daniel, we need to be careful. This could be an attempt to distract us from the patent investigation.""

Laura shook her head.

"Or it could explain why Richard and Alexander are fighting over the same technology.""

I called Eleanor again.

The number was still unavailable.

"Can we locate her address?"" I asked.

Laura opened her laptop.

"I have the address from your father's documents. Give me twenty minutes.""

I paced around the workshop.

My father's letter had mentioned Eleanor for a reason. He had trusted her enough to make her a witness to his invention.

And apparently, she'd been carrying a secret for years.

Twenty minutes later, Laura closed her laptop.

"I found the property. It's registered to Eleanor Whitmore, but the house has been listed as unoccupied for six months.""

"Where is she?""

"Her current address is listed as a private medical residence outside Boston.""

Michael looked concerned.

"Medical residence?""

"Not necessarily a hospital. It could be assisted living or temporary care.""

I grabbed my jacket.

"Let's go.""

The residence was a quiet building surrounded by trees and carefully maintained gardens.

A receptionist checked our identification before directing us to a private sitting room.

Eleanor was waiting beside the window.

She was in her late sixties, with silver hair and a thin gold necklace. Her hands trembled slightly as she poured tea into a porcelain cup.

When she saw me, she stood.

"Daniel.""

I approached her.

"You sent me that message.""

She nodded.

"I did.""

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""

She looked at Michael and Laura.

"Are these people trustworthy?""

"They're my legal and investigative team.""

She motioned toward the chairs.

"Then sit down. There's something you need to understand about your father and my family.""

I sat opposite her.

Eleanor took a deep breath.

"Richard and I married when I was young. Alexander was born during the marriage, but Richard wasn't his biological father.""

I remained silent.

"Before I met Richard, I was involved with another man. He was an engineer. A brilliant one. We separated before I discovered I was pregnant.""

"Who was he?""

Eleanor looked at me.

"Your father.""

The room went completely silent.

I stared at her.

"My father?""

She nodded.

"Thomas Carter.""

I stood abruptly.

"You're telling me Alexander Whitmore is my father's son?""

"Yes.""

I walked toward the window.

My father had another child.

A child he'd never told me about.

A child who had spent years trying to take the invention we'd built together.

"Did my father know?""

"Yes. He discovered the truth when Alexander was a toddler. I told him everything.""

"Then why didn't he claim him?""

Eleanor's eyes filled.

"Because I begged him not to. Richard had already agreed to raise Alexander as his own. I was afraid that exposing the truth would destroy our family.""

I turned around.

"So Dad just stayed away?""

"He never stopped caring. He sent money occasionally through an account I controlled. He also kept photographs of Alexander.""

I felt a strange mixture of anger and sadness.

"Did Alexander know?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"He found out when he was twenty-one.""

I frowned.

"How?""

"He discovered a letter from your father. After that, he became obsessed with the Carter family.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Did Richard know about the biological relationship?""

Eleanor nodded.

"He found out shortly after Alexander did.""

"And that's when the patent negotiations began?""

"Yes.""

Eleanor placed her cup on the table.

"Richard believed Thomas's invention would give Alexander a powerful position in the company. He wanted the technology to become his son's legacy.""

I shook my head.

"Why didn't he simply approach my father?""

"He did. Thomas refused to transfer ownership.""

"Because he wanted it to belong to me?""

"Because he believed Alexander would eventually use it responsibly. But Richard wanted complete control.""

I sat down again.

"And Martin?""

Eleanor looked toward the door.

"Martin was paid to arrange the transfer.""

"Did he forge my father's signature?""

"I believe so. But the person who signed the second agreement under your name was someone else.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who?""

Eleanor looked directly at me.

"Alexander.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The same man who had called me a mechanic at Olivia's graduation.

The same man who had treated me like an embarrassment.

He had known exactly who I was.

He had known I was his half-brother.

And he had spent years helping people steal my father's work.

"Why?"" I whispered.

Eleanor reached into her handbag.

"Because he wanted everything your father left behind.""

She removed a small photograph.

It showed my father holding a little boy.

The boy had dark hair and bright eyes.

Alexander.

On the back, my father had written:

My two sons deserve better than the secrets we've left them.

I stared at the words.

"Did Alexander ever try to contact Dad?""

"Once. Thomas invited him to visit the workshop. Alexander refused.""

"Why?""

Eleanor's voice broke.

"Because he believed your father had chosen you over him.""

I looked at the photograph again.

My father hadn't chosen one son over another.

He'd tried to protect both.

But Alexander had interpreted his silence as rejection.

Michael asked another question.

"Mrs. Whitmore, do you have evidence of the forged agreement?""

Eleanor nodded.

"I kept the original correspondence.""

She opened a small locked drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

Inside were letters between Richard, Martin, and Alexander.

One letter contained a handwritten instruction.

Use Daniel's signature from the original sale documents. The boy won't notice the difference.

I recognized Alexander's handwriting from the business email.

My half-brother had forged my signature.

Eleanor looked at me.

"There's something else. Alexander recently discovered that Thomas had hidden a second patent application.""

I stared at her.

"Where?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know. But Alexander believes it contains a clause that could give you complete control over the original technology.""

Michael immediately examined the letters.

"That changes everything.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"Why are you telling me now?""

She lowered her eyes.

"Because Alexander came to see me last week. He told me that if I continued protecting your father’s work, I would lose everything.""

I stood.

"Did he threaten you?""

She nodded.

Then she reached for my hand.

"Daniel, I know what he did was wrong. But he's still your brother.""

I looked at the photograph.

A brother I'd never known.

A man who had helped destroy everything my father had built.

"I can't promise I'll forgive him," I said.

Eleanor nodded.

"I wouldn't ask you to.""

As we prepared to leave, she handed me one final document.

It was a letter from my father addressed to Alexander.

The date was two months before his death.

I unfolded it.

Alexander,

I know you're angry. But the invention isn't the reason I wanted you to come to the workshop.

I wanted you to meet your brother.

He doesn't know about you yet. But one day, I hope you will both understand that family is not a competition.

There is room for both of you.

Dad.

I couldn't speak.

My father had tried to bring us together.

Alexander had chosen something else.

As we walked outside, Michael's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and then looked at me.

"Daniel, we have a serious problem.""

"What?""

"Alexander has filed an emergency motion to freeze your patent portfolio.""

I frowned.

"On what grounds?""

Michael looked at the documents in his hand.

"He's claiming that the original technology was developed by Thomas Carter and his biological son jointly.""

I stared at him.

"He's claiming ownership through his relationship with Dad?""

May you like

Michael nodded.

"And he's naming himself as the rightful co-inventor.""
