Chapter 11: My Brother's $38 Million Betrayal

By noon, the legal filing had reached our attorneys.

Alexander Whitmore was claiming that his biological relationship with my father gave him an interest in the original invention.

It was an extraordinary argument.

And according to Michael, it was deliberately designed to delay the $38 million licensing agreement.

"He knows he can't prove ownership simply by being your father's son," Michael explained.

"But he's trying to create enough uncertainty to prevent the deal from closing.""

I sat across from him in his office.

"So what happens now?""

"We challenge the motion. Your father's patent records, the original engineering ledger, and the development history are all relevant.""

"What about the agreement with my forged signature?""

"That's central to the fraud investigation.""

I looked at the photograph of my father and Alexander.

"He's my brother.""

Michael nodded.

"Biologically, yes.""

"He knew who I was at graduation.""

"Apparently.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Then he knew exactly what he'd done when he called me a mechanic.""

Michael didn't answer.

The following afternoon, Richard Whitmore requested an urgent private meeting.

I almost refused.

But Michael insisted that hearing Richard's position could reveal what Alexander was planning.

We met in a private office at Whitmore Technologies.

Richard looked considerably older than he had during our first meeting.

His expensive suit was wrinkled, and his usual confidence had disappeared.

He stood when I entered.

"Daniel.""

"Mr. Whitmore.""

He gestured toward a chair.

"Please.""

I remained standing.

"Let's make this quick.""

Richard nodded.

"I know about Eleanor.""

I stared at him.

"Then you know everything.""

"Not everything. But enough.""

He looked toward the window.

"Alexander was a difficult child. I raised him as my own, but I always knew there was something missing.""

I crossed my arms.

"Did you know he was stealing my father's invention?""

Richard looked down.

"I knew he wanted control of the technology.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He sighed.

"I knew about the original transfer arrangement. I didn't know he had forged your signature.""

I laughed without humor.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"No. I expect you to understand that I made terrible decisions.""

I leaned forward.

"My father refused to sell his patents. Martin forged documents. Your company bought the shop through a hidden subsidiary. And Olivia received money to claim she invented the technology.""

Richard closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

The admission surprised me.

"You're not denying it?""

"I won't insult you by pretending the evidence doesn't exist.""

I sat down.

"Why?""

Richard looked at me.

"Because I wanted Alexander to have something extraordinary. I believed that if he controlled the technology, he could become independent of me.""

"And you thought stealing my father's work was acceptable?""

"No.""

"But you did it anyway.""

Richard nodded.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he opened a drawer and removed a folder.

"This contains the original payment records between Whitmore and Martin Shaw.""

I didn't touch it.

"Why give me this?""

"Because Alexander has gone too far.""

"Too far for you? Or too far because he might destroy your company?""

Richard looked wounded.

"Both, perhaps.""

I stared at him.

He continued.

"Alexander recently transferred a significant amount of company money into an offshore account. He intended to use it to fund a separate manufacturing operation using your father's technology.""

"Without the license?""

"Yes.""

I opened the folder.

The transfer records were there.

Several payments had been made to a newly registered company.

The director was Alexander.

And the largest transfer was for $4.2 million.

"Where did this money come from?""

"Whitmore's research division.""

I looked at him.

"So he stole from your company too.""

Richard nodded.

"He believes the technology should belong to him.""

I closed the folder.

"Then help us stop him.""

Richard leaned back.

"I will.""

Before I could respond, the office door opened.

Alexander walked in.

His expression changed when he saw me.

"Father, what is he doing here?""

Richard stood.

"We're discussing the patent dispute.""

Alexander looked at the folder.

"What did you give him?""

"The financial records.""

Alexander's face turned red.

"You had no right.""

Richard raised his voice.

"Neither did you when you forged Daniel's signature.""

Alexander turned toward me.

"You think you're going to take everything from me?""

I stood.

"I haven't taken anything from you.""

"You're getting a $38 million deal for something Dad built.""

I froze.

The word had slipped out naturally.

Dad.

Richard looked at his son.

"Alexander.""

But Alexander continued.

"Do you know how many years I've spent trying to prove myself? He gave you the workshop, the patents, everything. I got nothing.""

I stared at him.

"You got a father who wanted to meet you.""

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something beneath the arrogance.

Pain.

"You don't know anything about my childhood.""

"You're right. I don't. But I know Dad tried to contact you.""

Alexander laughed bitterly.

"He sent me a letter. One letter. After twenty years of pretending I didn't exist.""

"He was trying to protect you.""

"From what? The truth?""

I took a breath.

"He wanted us to be brothers.""

Alexander looked away.

Then he pointed at the folder.

"Give me the financial records.""

Richard stepped between us.

"No.""

Alexander's voice became dangerously quiet.

"You'll regret this.""

He turned toward the door.

Before leaving, he looked directly at me.

"You have no idea what you're getting yourself into, Daniel.""

The door slammed.

Richard slowly sat down.

"He's planning something.""

Michael, who had remained quiet throughout the confrontation, opened his laptop.

"Mr. Whitmore, we need a full copy of those financial records and written confirmation that the company will cooperate with the investigation.""

Richard nodded.

"Agreed.""

That evening, Michael called me.

"The court has denied Alexander's request for an immediate freeze.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

"But there's another development.""

"What?""

"Whitmore's board has suspended Alexander's executive authority pending an internal investigation.""

I leaned against my kitchen counter.

"Does that mean the licensing agreement can proceed?""

"Potentially. But we need to resolve the ownership dispute first.""

I looked at the clock.

"What about Olivia?""

Michael hesitated.

"She's requested a meeting.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

"She says she has evidence that Alexander paid her to falsify the research declaration.""

I sat down.

"Does she have proof?""

"Apparently, yes.""

I thought about the roses I'd left on the bench.

The engagement ring I'd carried across campus.

The six years I'd spent believing Olivia and I were building the same future.

"Tell her I'll meet her.""

Michael paused.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes. But this time, everything goes through the attorneys.""

The next morning, Olivia arrived at Michael's office carrying a thick folder.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was tied back, and she'd removed the expensive jewelry she usually wore.

She sat opposite me.

"Thank you for agreeing to see me.""

I didn't respond.

She opened the folder.

"I have bank records, emails, and a recorded conversation with Alexander.""

Michael leaned forward.

"What does the recording contain?""

Olivia looked at me.

"Alexander admitting that he knew the original invention belonged to your father. He also explains why he wanted me to claim the research as my own.""

I stared at her.

"Why are you giving this to us?""

She began crying.

"Because he has decided to blame everything on me.""

I felt nothing.

"Is that supposed to make me feel sorry for you?""

"No.""

She pushed a document toward me.

"This is the original payment agreement. The $120,000 wasn't just for research consulting. It was a payment for signing the independent inventorship declaration.""

Michael examined the document.

"Who prepared this?""

"Alexander's legal assistant.""

I looked at her.

"Did you know about the forged agreement with my signature?""

Olivia shook her head.

"No. I swear.""

"Did you know he was using my father's notebooks without permission?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know he had bought my father's shop through a subsidiary?""

Her silence answered the question.

I stood.

"Then you knew enough.""

Olivia wiped her eyes.

"Daniel, I know I destroyed everything between us. But I can help you prove what happened.""

I looked at the folder.

"Then tell the truth. All of it.""

She nodded.

But before Michael could begin questioning her, her phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

Her face went pale.

"What is it?"" Michael asked.

Olivia slowly turned the phone around.

A message from Alexander appeared.

*IF YOU HAND OVER THAT RECORDING, I'LL RELEASE THE ORIGINAL GRADUATION VIDEO AND TELL EVERYONE WHAT YOU REALLY DID TO DANIEL.*

I looked at her.

"What graduation video?""

Olivia closed her eyes.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"There's something I never told you about that day.""
