Chapter 6: The Signature I Never Made
I knew the signature before I even saw it clearly.
Because it looked like mine.
That was the terrifying part.
The curves.
The letters.
The small mistake I always made when signing my last name.
Someone had studied my handwriting.
Someone had practiced.
Melissa zoomed in.
“This was submitted electronically.””
I stared at the screen.
“What is it?””
“A business authorization form.””
“For what?””
She read quietly.
Then her expression changed.
“For transferring ownership rights.””
My throat tightened.
“Ownership of what?””
She looked at me.
“Your townhouse.””
The room went silent.
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Then I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because my brain couldn’t accept it.
“My house?””
Melissa nodded.
“According to this document, you gave Ryan permission to use the property as collateral.””
I grabbed the paper.
“I never signed this.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
Melissa pointed at the signature.
“Someone copied your signature.””
I looked down.
A fake version of my own name.
A fake version of my life.
“They were going to take my house.””
Melissa didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The evidence was right there.
The loans.
The insurance.
The stolen documents.
The fake signatures.
Ryan and Linda weren’t just trying to control me.
They were trying to remove me from my own life.
I sat back.
Trying to breathe.
Then Melissa said something that made me look up.
“Claire, there’s one thing I don’t understand.””
“What?””
“If they had all this planned, why did they let you leave?””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“Think about it. They knew you paid the bills. They knew you had income. They knew your credit was valuable.””
She tapped the documents.
“Why push you away?””
I had no answer.
Because she was right.
If Ryan wanted control, he needed me there.
Unless…
Unless leaving was part of the plan.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What if they wanted me to leave?””
Melissa looked at me.
“Explain.””
“What if they wanted me angry enough to walk away?””
The words felt horrible as I said them.
“What if the slap wasn’t just anger?””
Melissa became very still.
“What are you thinking?””
I looked at the evidence.
“They knew I would never stay after that.””
“And?””
“And they knew I would leave without fighting for the house.””
Melissa slowly nodded.
Because she understood.
They weren’t trying to make me stay.
They were trying to make me abandon everything.
My phone rang.
This time, it was not Ryan.
It was the police.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
“Is this Claire Morgan?””
“Yes.””
“This is Officer Daniels. We received a report regarding your townhouse.””
My stomach dropped.
“What report?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your husband reported that you removed property from the home without permission.””
I looked at Melissa.
She immediately understood.
“He’s creating a paper trail.””
I whispered:
“He’s trying to make me look like the criminal.””
The officer continued.
“We would like to ask you a few questions.””
I took a deep breath.
“I’ll cooperate.””
After the call ended, Melissa stood.
“This changes things.””
“How?””
“Now we stop reacting.””
She gathered the documents.
“We start building the case.””
For the first time since I left, I felt something other than fear.
Control.
But before we left, Melissa received an email.
She opened it.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She turned the screen toward me.
It was from the lender.
A new document had been discovered.
A document Ryan submitted after I left the house.
I read the title.
My blood ran cold.
“Emergency Spouse Authorization.””
Melissa looked at me.
“Claire…”
I stared at the screen.
Because at the bottom of the document was a date.
The day after Ryan slapped me.
And beside the signature line…
was my name.
Already signed.
I had been gone less than twenty-four hours.
And somehow, Ryan had created a document proving I agreed to everything.
A document I had never seen.
A document I had never touched.
A document that could destroy me if we didn’t prove it was fake.
Melissa closed her laptop.
“We need to find out exactly how far they were willing to go.””
May you like
And for the first time, I wondered if leaving that night had saved me…
or if it had only forced them to reveal the next part of their plan.
