Chapter 5: The Secret Account

For a long time, I just stared at Ryan’s message.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I finally understood.

He wasn’t hiding anymore.

He wanted me to know he was watching.

Melissa noticed my expression.

“What did he say?””

I handed her the phone.

She read it silently.

Then she looked at me.

“He knows we’re here.””

“How?””

“Someone told him.””

My eyes moved around the room.

The empty shelves.

The organized desk.

The carefully cleaned surfaces.

Someone had been preparing.

And someone had been waiting for me to discover it.

“We leave,” Melissa said.

I looked at her.

“But we need evidence.””

“We have evidence.””

She held up the folder.

“Enough to prove identity theft. Enough to show financial misconduct.””

“But not enough to know what he planned.””

Melissa didn’t argue.

Because she knew I was right.

There was still something missing.

The reason behind everything.

We returned to her office and spent the next several hours reviewing every document.

Every transaction.

Every email.

Every application.

Then Melissa found something.

“Wait.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She turned her laptop toward me.

A business account.

Ryan’s construction company had opened a new account six months ago.

Six months.

The same time the first loan was created.

“What’s strange about that?””

Melissa pointed at the records.

“The account has multiple deposits.””

I leaned closer.

“How much?””

She scrolled.

My breathing stopped.

“Over $70,000.””

“Where did it come from?””

She clicked.

The answer appeared.

Several transfers.

All from accounts connected to me.

My salary.

My savings.

My joint account.

Money I thought was being used to keep our home running.

Ryan had been moving it.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Piece by piece.

“He was draining me.””

Melissa nodded.

“And hiding it.””

I felt anger rising.

Not explosive anger.

Something colder.

A realization that settled deep.

Ryan hadn’t made one terrible decision.

He had made hundreds.

Every lie.

Every document.

Every transfer.

Every conversation with his mother.

It was a choice.

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

It was Ryan.

I almost ignored it.

Melissa shook her head.

“Answer.””

I did.

“Hello?””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then Ryan spoke.

“You went through my things.””

His voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“You went through mine first.””

A pause.

“You’re making this bigger than it is.””

I laughed softly.

I couldn’t believe he was still saying that.

“Ryan, you stole my identity.””

“That’s a serious accusation.””

“You opened loans in my name.””

“I was helping our family.””

“By lying to me?””

His voice hardened.

“You always cared more about money than us.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The same trick.

Make me the problem.

Make me defend myself.

But I didn’t.

“Where is the money, Ryan?””

Silence.

Then:

“You really think Melissa can save you?””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“How do you know my attorney’s name?””

Another silence.

A mistake.

A small one.

But I heard it.

Ryan recovered quickly.

“You told me before.””

“No, I didn’t.””

He didn’t answer.

I looked at Melissa.

She was already writing something down.

“Ryan.””

“What?””

“Did your mother help you?””

His breathing changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“She’s my mother.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“You’re destroying this family.””

I almost smiled.

“You destroyed it when you decided I was something you could use.””

The line went quiet.

Then Ryan said something that made my skin crawl.

“You don’t understand what you walked away from.””

“What does that mean?””

“You’ll find out.””

The call ended.

Melissa looked at me.

“That wasn’t a threat.””

“What was it?””

“A warning.””

That night, we contacted the bank again.

There was one account we hadn’t checked.

A hidden business account connected to Ryan’s company.

The bank representative hesitated before giving us the information.

“There’s one unusual transfer.””

“How unusual?”” Melissa asked.

The representative paused.

“$45,000.””

My heart sank.

“Where did it go?””

The answer appeared on the screen.

A company name.

One I didn’t recognize.

Melissa searched it.

Then she stopped.

“Claire.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“This company is owned by Linda.””

I stared.

His mother.

The woman who searched my suitcase.

The woman who watched him hit me.

The woman who told me to learn respect.

She wasn’t just involved.

She was benefiting.

Then Melissa opened the company records.

And we saw the date it was created.

Three weeks before my husband first asked me to “be more understanding.””

Three weeks before the life insurance application.

Three weeks before everything changed.

I whispered:

“They weren’t trying to save their business.””

Melissa looked at the screen.

“No.””

“Then what were they trying to do?””

She clicked one more file.

May you like

A document attached to the company registration.

A document with my name on it.
