Chapter 13: The Friend Who Knew Everything

For several seconds, I thought I had misunderstood Melissa.

“My husband’s friend?””

She nodded.

“The footage shows someone else signing the document.””

“Who?””

Melissa turned the laptop toward me.

A name appeared in the report.

Ethan Brooks.

Ryan’s business partner.

The man who had attended our wedding.

The man who had helped Ryan start his construction company.

The man who once told me, “Ryan is lucky to have someone like you.””

I felt sick.

Because suddenly, every memory involving Ethan looked different.

The dinners.

The conversations.

The times he asked innocent questions about our finances.

“How much longer is your mortgage?””

“Do you manage all the accounts?””

“Does Ryan have access to everything?””

At the time, I thought he was making conversation.

Now I wondered what information he was collecting.

Melissa watched my expression.

“You know him well?””

“I thought I did.””

That sentence felt heavier than I expected.

Because it wasn’t just Ryan who had betrayed me.

It was everyone around him who helped create the illusion that I was safe.

The next morning, Ethan’s attorney contacted Melissa.

They wanted a meeting.

I immediately said no.

But Melissa shook her head.

“We should go.””

“Why?””

“Because people make mistakes when they think they can explain themselves.””

I hated that she was right.

The meeting took place at a small conference room.

Ethan arrived alone.

He looked nervous.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Nervous.

That surprised me.

Because Ryan had always been the one who looked untouchable.

Ethan sat down.

“Claire.””

I didn’t respond.

He looked at Melissa.

“I know how this looks.””

Melissa opened her folder.

“Then explain it.””

Ethan swallowed.

“I didn’t create the documents.””

“But you signed them.””

“I was told they were legitimate.””

I stared at him.

“You signed a document giving my husband control over my property without speaking to me?””

His eyes dropped.

“I thought Ryan handled everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I trusted him.””

I almost laughed.

“So did I.””

The room went quiet.

Melissa pushed a copy of the power of attorney across the table.

“You were recorded signing this.””

Ethan looked at the document.

“I didn’t know the signature was fake.””

“Then why did you witness it?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me everything.

Melissa leaned forward.

“Ethan.””

His shoulders dropped.

“Because Ryan asked me to.””

“Why?””

Another silence.

Finally, he spoke.

“He said Claire was becoming unstable.””

My stomach tightened.

“He said what?””

Ethan looked ashamed.

“He told me you were angry. That you were threatening to ruin his business. That he needed temporary authority to protect your assets.””

I stared at him.

The same story.

The same lie.

Ryan always changed the details.

But the ending was always the same.

Make me look unreasonable.

Make himself look like the victim.

“Did you believe him?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Melissa continued.

“What else did Ryan tell you?””

Ethan rubbed his face.

“He said the marriage was ending.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

I felt a chill.

Months.

Before the slap.

Before I left.

Before I knew.

“He planned this for months.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“There were meetings.””

“With who?””

He looked at me.

“Ryan and Linda.””

My heart sank.

“How many?””

“I don’t know.””

“Try.””

Ethan looked away.

“Several.””

Melissa wrote something down.

“What were they discussing?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your trust.””

The word landed like a stone.

“What about it?””

“He said once he had control of the property, everything would be easier.””

I looked at Ethan.

“And you helped him.””

His face changed.

Regret.

Real regret.

“Yes.””

I expected anger.

I expected excuses.

Instead, I saw something worse.

Someone who knew he had helped destroy another person’s life.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology came too late.

Much too late.

But I believed he meant it.

That didn’t erase anything.

Melissa gathered the documents.

“We’ll need a formal statement.””

Ethan nodded.

Before leaving, he stopped.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Ryan doesn’t know that I kept copies.””

Melissa immediately turned.

“Copies of what?””

Ethan opened his bag.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I thought something felt wrong.””

Inside were printed emails.

Messages between Ryan and Linda.

The first one was enough to make my hands shake.

Ryan wrote:

“Once Claire signs, we can move forward.””

Linda replied:

“She won’t sign willingly.””

Another message appeared.

Ryan:

“Then we make sure she doesn’t have a choice.””

I stopped reading.

Because those words answered the question I had been asking myself since the beginning.

Why the slap?

Why that moment?

Why then?

It wasn’t just anger.

It was pressure.

They needed me frightened.

They needed me confused.

They needed me to surrender.

But I didn’t.

And now they knew.

I looked at Melissa.

“What happens next?””

She closed the folder.

“Now we show the court everything.””

For the first time, I felt something close to peace.

Not because everything was over.

Because the truth finally had somewhere to go.

But when we left the building, my phone buzzed.

A message from Ryan.

One sentence.

“I know Ethan talked.””

My blood froze.

May you like

A second message appeared.

“You have no idea what you started.””
