Chapter 11: The Woman Behind the Plan
The note from Linda changed everything.
Before that moment, there was still a part of me that wondered if Ryan had acted alone.
Maybe he had lied to his mother.
Maybe he manipulated her.
Maybe she was just following his lead.
But that handwriting destroyed that last bit of doubt.
Linda wasn’t helping him.
She was planning with him.
Melissa placed the note into an evidence bag.
“Do you remember when you found this?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Was it inside the mortgage folder?””
“Yes.””
She looked thoughtful.
“That means she had access to your documents.””
I sat back.
My own home felt like a crime scene.
Not because of what happened there.
Because of what had been hidden there.
Melissa contacted the forensic team again.
This time, they searched for fingerprints and digital evidence connected to the documents.
While we waited, I made a list.
Everything Ryan had done.
Every moment that felt strange.
The missing driver’s license.
The questions about my finances.
The sudden interest in my trust.
The pressure to combine accounts.
The way he always wanted me to believe marriage meant giving him unlimited access.
I wrote it all down.
And as the list grew, I realized something painful.
The warning signs had been everywhere.
I just kept explaining them away.
That evening, Melissa received a call.
She listened quietly.
Then she looked at me.
“They found something.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
“The note from Linda was written on paper from her office.””
“How do they know?””
“Because the same paper was found in her business records.””
I frowned.
“Her business records?””
Melissa nodded.
“Remember the company that received the $45,000 transfer?””
I nodded.
“They searched public filings.””
She turned her laptop around.
The company information appeared.
The name.
The address.
The registered owner.
Linda Morgan.
“She created the company eight months ago.””
Eight months.
Before the first loan.
Before the insurance application.
Before the documents.
Everything started making sense.
Ryan needed money.
Linda created a way to receive it.
But they needed access.
And I was the easiest target.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Melissa looked at me.
“Answer.””
I did.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Claire?””
I recognized it immediately.
Linda.
I didn’t say anything.
She continued.
“I think we need to talk.””
I almost laughed.
After everything.
After the stolen documents.
After helping destroy my life.
Now she wanted a conversation.
“What do you want?””
A long pause.
“You’re misunderstanding the situation.””
I closed my eyes.
“I found the documents.””
“That doesn’t mean you understand them.””
Her confidence bothered me.
“You forged my signature.””
“No.””
Her answer came too quickly.
“I protected my son.””
I froze.
Melissa immediately started recording notes.
“You’re admitting you helped him?””
“I’m admitting Ryan was trying to protect his future.””
“My future?””
“No, Claire.””
Her voice became colder.
“His.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
Because she finally said it.
She didn’t see me as family.
She saw me as something standing between her son and what he wanted.
“You never liked me, did you?””
She sighed.
“I liked what you could provide.””
Silence.
Even she seemed to realize she had said too much.
“What did you say?””
“I mean…”
“No.””
My voice became steady.
“Say it again.””
She didn’t.
But she didn’t apologize either.
That told me everything.
Then Linda said something I would never forget.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
I felt my grip tighten.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you had a comfortable life.””
“Until you and Ryan decided to take it.””
“You’re making this dramatic.””
I almost smiled.
That word again.
Dramatic.
The word Ryan used after hitting me.
The word people use when they want you to ignore what happened.
“I’m done listening to you.””
Before I ended the call, Linda spoke one last time.
“You think you’ve won because you found some papers?””
I stopped.
“What?””
“You don’t know what Ryan signed before you left.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did he sign?””
Silence.
Then the call ended.
I looked at Melissa.
“What was that?””
She immediately began searching through the documents.
“I don’t know.””
A minute passed.
Then another.
Finally, she stopped.
“Claire.””
Her voice was quiet.
“What?””
She turned the laptop toward me.
A document appeared.
One I had never seen.
A separation agreement.
With my name on it.
My supposed signature.
And a clause that made my entire body go cold.

If accepted…
I would lose my claim to the trust.
