Chapter 9: The Witness In The Dark

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

I stared at the screen.

Unknown number.

A stranger’s voice.

A stranger claiming she was with my mother the night she died.

Nobody moved.

Even the wind seemed to disappear.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The woman didn’t answer immediately.

I could hear her breathing.

Fast.

Nervous.

Like she was afraid someone might hear her.

“Emily, listen to me carefully.””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Laura.””

The name meant nothing.

But the fear in her voice did.

“Laura who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Laura Bennett.””

Daniel’s face changed.

I noticed immediately.

“You know her?””

He didn’t answer.

That terrified me.

I turned away from everyone.

“Why are you calling me?””

The woman whispered:

“Because you opened the door.””

I frowned.

“What door?””

“The one your mother spent years trying to keep closed.””

I looked at the envelope.

The key attached to my mother’s letter.

My stomach twisted.

“How do you know about that?””

“Because I helped your mother hide it.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emily, hang up.””

I looked at him.

The woman heard him.

“Is Daniel there?””

I froze.

“Yes.””

Her voice became urgent.

“Then don’t tell him where you are.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What did she say?””

I ignored him.

“Why shouldn’t I trust him?””

The woman went quiet.

Then:

“Because Daniel was not the only person your mother contacted.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

“She had another son.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Everyone went silent.

The woman continued.

“Emily, your mother was trying to uncover the truth about Daniel.””

I looked at him.

Daniel’s expression was unreadable.

“What truth?””

Laura whispered:

“She wasn’t sure Daniel was really her son.””

The words hit like a punch.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked hurt.

“That’s a lie.””

The woman heard him.

“Daniel?””

He stepped closer.

“Laura, don’t do this.””

My eyes widened.

They knew each other.

“You know her,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“I knew her years ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He had no answer.

Again.

Another secret.

The woman spoke.

“Emily, you have to understand. Your mother loved Daniel. But she was afraid.””

“Afraid of him?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Afraid of what someone did to him.””

I felt overwhelmed.

Too many secrets.

Too many missing pieces.

I looked at my father.

He looked as lost as I felt.

“Laura,” I said slowly.

“What happened the night my mother died?””

Her voice dropped.

“She was supposed to meet me.””

“For what?””

“To show me proof.””

“Proof of what?””

The woman hesitated.

Then:

“Proof that Patricia wasn’t the only person hiding money.””

My eyes moved toward my father.

No.

Not him.

Please.

Laura continued.

“Emily, your mother discovered someone inside the family had been moving money for years.””

My father stepped back.

“What?””

I looked at him.

He looked genuinely shocked.

But I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Laura continued:

“She was going to confront them.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Your father.””

My entire body froze.

The phone went silent.

I couldn’t breathe.

My father looked at me.

“Emily, no.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

I looked at both men.

The two people connected to my mother’s secrets.

The two people who claimed they wanted to protect me.

And for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

I had been searching for the person who hurt my mother.

But maybe I had never looked close enough.

Laura’s voice returned.

“Emily, you need to find the original documents.””

“Where?””

“In the place your mother trusted most.””

I looked at the key in my hand.

My mother’s handwriting.

The hidden box.

The bedroom floor.

The secrets beneath my home.

“What place?””

Laura whispered:

“Your old bedroom.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Then my father said my name.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

And he was crying.

“Whatever she told you…”

He swallowed.

“Don’t go back to that house.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because there’s something in that room your mother wanted you to find.””

May you like

A pause.

“And something someone else desperately wants to destroy.””
