Chapter 14: The Final Secret In The Cabin

The cabin had been abandoned for years.

At least, that was what I believed.

My father drove.

Daniel sat beside me.

Nobody spoke much.

There were too many truths sitting between us.

When we finally reached the old dirt road, I recognized the trees.

I remembered running through them as a child.

My mother chasing after me.

Her laughter.

Her voice.

The last place where my family had ever felt normal.

The cabin door was unlocked.

That scared me.

My father noticed too.

“Someone has been here.””

Daniel nodded.

He stepped inside first.

I followed.

The air smelled like dust and old wood.

Everything was exactly how I remembered.

The fireplace.

The faded couch.

The small table where my mother taught me card games.

Then I saw it.

A photograph on the wall.

My mother.

Me.

Daniel.

But I had never seen it before.

I touched the frame.

“When was this taken?””

Daniel looked closer.

His expression changed.

“After I found her.””

I turned.

“You were here?””

He nodded.

“Your mother brought me here before she died.””

I stared.

“She brought you into my life.””

“She wanted to.””

“Then why hide you?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because Claire found out.””

My father went pale.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Your wife was not working alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“My father?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Someone else.””

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

My father whispered:

“Did you hear that?””

Another sound.

A floorboard.

Someone was inside.

Daniel motioned for us to stay quiet.

He moved toward the stairs.

I followed anyway.

At the top was a hallway.

Three doors.

The last one was slightly open.

Daniel pushed it.

Inside was a small room.

A desk.

Boxes.

Files.

And a woman standing by the window.

She turned.

And my heart stopped.

Because she looked like my mother.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

The woman whispered:

“Emily.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My father stumbled backward.

“Claire.””

The woman’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Sadness.

“You finally told her.””

My father looked broken.

“You’re alive.””

Claire laughed softly.

“Were you hoping I wasn’t?””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

She looked at me.

“I’m your aunt.””

The words felt impossible.

“My mother’s sister.””

She nodded.

“And I’m sorry.””

I almost screamed.

“Sorry?””

Eight years.

A lifetime.

“Where was she?””

Claire looked away.

“Your mother survived the crash.””

My knees almost gave out.

“She was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she come back?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she couldn’t.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

“She was afraid.””

“Of you?””

Claire looked down.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You know where she is.””

Claire looked at him.

Then at me.

“I know where she was.””

My heart stopped.

“Was?””

Claire nodded.

“She died two years ago.””

I felt like the air left my body.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Claire stepped closer.

“She wanted you to know she never abandoned you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“Then why?””

Claire looked at the files.

“Because she spent the rest of her life trying to protect you.””

I looked at the papers.

“What are these?””

Claire opened one folder.

“The proof.””

My father stepped closer.

“Proof of what?””

Claire looked at him.

“Everything.””

She handed me a document.

My mother’s signature.

Bank records.

Evidence.

And one final letter.

I opened it.

*Emily, if you are reading this, then you know the truth. I am sorry I couldn’t be there. But please remember one thing.*

I held my breath.

*I left because I loved you.*

I cried.

For the mother I lost.

For the mother I never knew I had lost.

Then I read the final line.

*The person who started all of this is still out there. And they have been waiting for you to find these papers.*

I looked up.

“What person?””

Claire’s face turned pale.

Before she answered, the lights went out.

A crash came from downstairs.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

Someone else was in the cabin.

And then a voice called from the darkness.

“Emily.””

I froze.

May you like

Because I knew that voice.

It was Madison.
