Chapter 3: The Brother My Mother Hid

I didn’t open the gate.

Not after that.

Not after my father told me the stranger who helped me buy my house was my brother.

A brother I never knew existed.

A brother my mother had hidden from me.

My father pressed his hand against the metal bars.

“Emily, please listen.””

I looked at him.

“For eight years, you never told me anything about this?””

His face collapsed.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“Then what did you know?””

He looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

Because my father had always been terrible at lying.

And right now, he was trying.

Patricia stepped forward.

“Your mother made decisions before we knew the truth.””

I looked at her sharply.

“Don’t talk about my mother like you knew her.””

Patricia flinched.

For once, she had no comeback.

My father lowered his voice.

“His name is Daniel.””

The name hit me strangely.

Daniel.

The man who had stood beside me in the closing office.

The man who had congratulated me when I signed the papers.

The man who had said, “Your mother would be proud you bought a place like this.””

I remembered those words.

At the time, I thought he was just being kind.

Now they felt like a warning.

“How does he know my mother?”” I asked.

My father looked at the ground.

“Because she was his mother too.””

The world felt unreal.

I walked backward until I reached the porch steps.

My mother.

My perfect memory of her.

The woman who always told me honesty mattered.

The woman who kept every drawing I made as a child.

The woman who whispered my name every night when she was sick.

She had a secret.

A huge one.

And somehow, everyone knew except me.

I turned back toward my father.

“Why now?””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“Why are you here now?””

His expression changed.

I saw the answer before he said it.

“You didn’t come because you missed me.””

“Emily…”

“You came because you found something.””

He didn’t speak.

Patricia did.

“We found documents too.””

I stared at her.

“What documents?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Your mother left instructions.””

My heart stopped.

“Instructions for what?””

He looked at the envelope.

“She wanted Daniel to have something.””

“Something?””

He nodded.

“But she also wrote that nobody should open the box unless…”

He stopped.

“Unless what?””

My father swallowed.

“Unless you left the house.””

A chill moved through me.

“What?””

Patricia started crying again.

“She knew.””

I looked at her.

“Knew what?””

“She knew one day we would fail you.””

The words hung between us.

For the first time, I saw something different in Patricia.

Not guilt.

Fear.

My father reached into the envelope and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I found this under the box.””

He held it up.

“My name is on it.””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

He hesitated.

Then he read the first line.

“Emily, if you are reading this, then the people I trusted to protect you have already hurt you.””

My breath disappeared.

My mother’s words.

After all these years.

My father looked like he was about to cry.

“She knew this would happen.””

I stared at the letter.

My entire life had been built on things people refused to tell me.

The hidden child.

The secret photographs.

The box beneath my bedroom floor.

The promises my father broke.

I reached for the paper through the gate.

But before I touched it, my father pulled it back.

“Wait.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“There’s something else you need to know about Daniel.””

I frowned.

“What could possibly be worse?””

My father looked toward the road.

Then back at me.

“Daniel didn’t just help you buy this house.””

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

“What are you talking about?””

My father whispered:

“He’s the reason your mother was able to leave you this house in the first place.””

I stared at him.

Because that was impossible.

I had bought this house with my own money.

Hadn’t I?

Then my father handed me the final document from the envelope.

And at the top of the page was a name I never expected to see.

Mine.

But underneath it was another name.

May you like

The name of the person who had secretly paid for everything.

My mother’s hidden son.
