Chapter 11: The Truth Daniel Buried

I left the old house before Patricia could stop me.

Not because I trusted Daniel.

Not because I believed him.

But because my new house suddenly felt vulnerable.

Someone had broken in.

Someone knew about the secret.

And somehow, I knew the clock was running out.

When I arrived, Daniel was standing outside my gate.

Police lights reflected against the trees.

My stomach dropped.

My home.

The place I thought was safe.

The front window was shattered.

The door had been forced open.

I walked toward it slowly.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation made me angry.

“Don’t.””

“What?””

“Don’t give me another half-truth.””

His face tightened.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the broken house.

“You’re trying to control what I know.””

He looked hurt.

But I didn’t care.

Not anymore.

“I need answers.””

Daniel nodded.

“You deserve them.””

Inside, everything was destroyed.

Drawers emptied.

Books thrown onto the floor.

The person who came here wasn’t searching randomly.

They knew what they wanted.

I looked around.

“They were looking for the box.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

He looked away.

Another secret.

I stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

He sighed.

“Because I knew your mother hid something in this house.””

My heart sank.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because I helped her.””

I stared at him.

“You helped her hide things from me?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I helped her protect you.””

I shook my head.

“That’s what everyone says.””

Daniel looked down.

“My mother abandoned me when I was a baby.””

The sudden confession stopped me.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“She gave me up because she thought she had no choice.””

His eyes moved around the room.

“When she found me years later, she spent the rest of her life trying to fix what she lost.””

I softened slightly.

Not because I forgot my anger.

But because I understood.

“You loved her.””

He nodded.

“She was the only person who ever came back for me.””

A silence followed.

Then I asked:

“What did she find?””

Daniel sat down.

“She discovered Patricia had access to your trust.””

I waited.

“But she also discovered something about your father.””

There it was again.

My father.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father borrowed money from the trust.””

My chest tightened.

“He stole from me?””

“Not exactly.””

I frowned.

“Explain.””

“He believed he would pay it back.””

I laughed bitterly.

“People always have reasons.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

“He invested it.””

“In what?””

“A business.””

“Did it fail?””

He nodded.

“And when he couldn’t replace the money, Patricia found out.””

I felt sick.

“So Patricia blackmailed him?””

Daniel looked surprised.

“How did you know?””

Because suddenly it all made sense.

My father wasn’t innocent.

But maybe he wasn’t the monster either.

He was weak.

And weak people could cause just as much damage.

“What happened the night Mom died?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She was going to expose everything.””

“Who?””

“Everyone involved.””

I stared.

“Everyone?””

He nodded.

“She had evidence against your father.””

A pause.

“And evidence against Patricia.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A photograph appeared.

My mother.

Standing outside a restaurant.

With my father.

And another person.

I zoomed in.

My hands went cold.

The third person was Daniel.

But the date was impossible.

It was taken six months after my mother’s funeral.

I looked at Daniel.

“What is this?””

His face changed.

He knew.

“What?””

He whispered:

“Where did you get that?””

I showed him.

He stared.

Then quietly said:

“That photo shouldn’t exist.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“Because I wasn’t there.””

My blood ran cold.

“Then who is that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward the broken window.

May you like

And whispered:

“Emily… your mother may not have died when everyone thinks she did.””
