Chapter 7: The Clinic That Never Existed
The words stayed in the air.
“That clinic burned down thirty years ago.””
I looked at Thomas.
Then at Michael.
Then back toward the road where my daughter had disappeared.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted someone to tell me this was another lie.
But every person standing around me had already proven one thing.
The truth was always worse than the lie.
“Then where did she take Lily?””
Michael looked at the photograph in my hand again.
“The location is real.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Michael turned toward him.
“You know it is.””
“I watched it burn.””
“You watched a building burn.””
Thomas went silent.
That silence told me everything.
I grabbed Michael’s jacket.
“Take me there.””
“Ryan—”
“Take me there.””
He looked into my eyes.
For the first time since meeting him, I saw something other than anger.
I saw fear.
“You don't understand what you're walking into.””
“My four-year-old daughter is inside.””
That was enough.
Michael nodded.
“We leave now.””
Claire stepped forward.
“I’m coming.””
I looked at her.
After everything.
After every secret.
A part of me still wanted to trust her.
But another part kept remembering all the nights she looked me in the eyes and lied.
“No.””
Her face broke.
“Ryan.””
“You knew about the passages.””
“I was protecting you.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
She flinched.
I regretted the words immediately.
But I couldn't take them back.
Sarah stepped beside me.
“She's right about one thing.””
I looked at her.
“She loves Lily.””
Claire's eyes filled.
“Thank you.””
Sarah shook her head.
“That doesn't erase what happened.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
Thirty minutes later, Michael drove us through empty country roads.
The old address was almost two hours outside the city.
The farther we went, the more isolated everything became.
Finally, we reached a rusted gate hidden behind overgrown trees.
A faded sign hung crookedly.
WALKER FAMILY RESEARCH PROPERTY.
My stomach tightened.
“This place belongs to my family?””
Michael nodded.
“Your grandfather bought the land.””
Thomas stared out the window.
“I thought Evelyn destroyed everything.””
Michael gave a bitter smile.
“She destroyed records.””
He looked toward the abandoned buildings.
“Not memories.””
We stepped out.
The main structure looked exactly like something abandoned for decades.
Broken windows.
Collapsed roof sections.
Wild vines covering the walls.
But there were fresh tire tracks leading toward the back entrance.
Someone had been here recently.
Someone was still here.
We entered through a side door.
Inside, the air smelled like dust and chemicals.
My flashlight moved across old medical equipment.
Tables.
Cabinets.
Children's drawings taped to walls.
I stopped.
The drawings were old.
But one image made my blood run cold.
A child had drawn a family.
A father.
A mother.
Two children.
Underneath were four names.
RYAN.
MICHAEL.
LILY.
EMMA.
The drawing was dated three years ago.
“How?””
Michael stared.
“She knew.””
“Who?””
Before he answered, we heard footsteps.
Everyone froze.
A woman appeared at the end of the hallway.
Gray hair.
Elegant coat.
Calm expression.
My entire body went cold.
“Mom.””
Evelyn Walker smiled.
“Hello, Ryan.””
For years, I had imagined this moment.
I imagined anger.
I imagined screaming.
I imagined demanding answers.
But seeing her alive stole every word.
“You took my daughter.””
She tilted her head.
“I protected her.””
“You kidnapped her.””
“I rescued her from people who wanted to use her.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Don't do this.””
Evelyn looked at him.
Her expression changed.
Not fear.
Disappointment.
“My lost son.””
Michael laughed.
“You lost me because you threw me away.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You never understood.””
“No.””
He pointed toward the building.
“I understood perfectly.””
Evelyn looked back at me.
“Ryan, you need to understand something. Everyone here has lied to you.””
She pointed toward Thomas.
“Your father.””
Toward Sarah.
“Your first love.””
Toward Claire.
“Your wife.””
Then she touched her chest.
“Even me.””
I clenched my fists.
“Where is Lily?””
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“Nearby.””
“Bring her to me.””
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“You sound exactly like your father.””
“That is not a compliment.””
“No.””
She looked toward the hallway.
“That is why I was afraid.””
A door opened behind her.
I heard a small voice.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
“Lily!””
I moved forward.
But Evelyn raised her hand.
Two men appeared behind her.
Not threatening.
Just blocking the path.
“Don't.””
My heart broke.
“Lily, come here.””
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Daddy, Grandma said you would be angry.””
“I’m not angry at you.””
“I know.””
She hugged herself.
“She showed me pictures.””
“What pictures?””
“Of you.””
My breath caught.
“She said you forgot.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Forgot what?””
The older woman walked closer.
“She knows now.””
“Knows what?””
Evelyn smiled.
“That she had a brother before her.””
The hallway went silent.
I looked at Michael.
Then at Lily.
“No.””
Lily whispered.
“Daddy…”
Her voice trembled.
“Am I the reason everyone is fighting?””
I dropped to my knees.
“No.””
I reached toward her.
“You are the reason I’m fighting.””
For a moment, Evelyn's expression softened.
Then an alarm suddenly started blaring.
Red lights flashed across the hallway.
Everyone looked toward the entrance.
Thomas went pale.
“What did you do?””
Evelyn's face changed.
Not fear.
Shock.
“I didn't activate that.””
Michael looked toward the security monitor.
A camera feed appeared.
A person was walking through the front gate.
Someone none of us expected.
Claire.
May you like
And she wasn't alone.
She was carrying a file.
