Chapter 14: The Last Locked Door
The sirens were getting closer.
But Mercer and Evelyn were moving deeper into the clinic.
Michael grabbed my arm.
“They'll use the service tunnel.””
“Where does it lead?””
“The old surgical wing.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“I know another route.””
Michael stared at him.
“You've known a lot of routes tonight.””
Thomas absorbed the insult.
“I deserve that.””
Then he looked at me.
“But if Daniel has that drive, we lose the evidence.””
I looked at Noah.
Then Lily.
Then Emma.
“No.””
Thomas frowned.
“No?””
“The evidence isn't the priority.””
I pointed toward the children.
“They are.””
For decades, every adult here had sacrificed children for records, research, secrets or control.
I wasn't doing it again.
Margaret approached.
“The authorities are almost here.””
“Then let them chase Mercer.””
Michael nodded.
“For once, I agree with the sensible brother.””
I looked at him.
“Sensible?””
“Don't get used to it.””
Despite everything, I laughed.
A real laugh.
It lasted maybe one second.
But I needed it.
Then Lily tugged my sleeve.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Grandma said she was sorry.””
I crouched.
“When?””
“Before she left.””
My smile disappeared.
“What exactly did she say?””
Lily thought.
“She said, ‘Tell Ryan I'm sorry I couldn't fix Michael.’”
Michael went completely still.
“What?””
Lily looked at him.
“She said your name.””
He turned toward the dark corridor.
“She's not helping Mercer.””
Thomas understood first.
“She followed him.””
“Why?””
Michael looked at Margaret.
“The drive.””
Then at me.
“She wants to destroy it.””
Evelyn wasn't escaping.
She was trying to erase the last evidence.
Again.
I stood.
“Stay with the kids.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Ryan.””
“I need to stop her.””
“You just said the evidence wasn't the priority.””
“It isn't.””
I looked at Michael.
“But if she destroys it, Noah and Emma spend their lives wondering whether anyone can prove what happened to them.””
Noah stared at me.
I saw the answer in his face.
He needed the truth documented.
Not for revenge.
For himself.
“I’m coming,” Michael said.
Thomas joined us.
This time, I didn't argue.
The three of us entered the service corridor.
Father.
Two sons.
Whatever biology said.
We reached the surgical wing just as glass shattered.
Mercer stood beside an old furnace.
The flash drive was in his hand.
Evelyn blocked his path.
“You lied to me,” she said.
Mercer laughed.
“You built your entire life on lies.””
“I believed the research could help people.””
“You believed you were special.””
Her face tightened.
Maybe because it was true.
Michael stepped into the room.
“Give us the drive.””
Mercer looked at him.
“You think exposing this fixes you?””
“No.””
Michael's answer was immediate.
“It stops you from doing it to somebody else.””
Mercer backed toward the furnace.
Thomas moved right.
I moved left.
“No one needs to get hurt.””
Mercer smiled.
“Spoken like the child who got the normal life.””
Michael flinched.
I saw it.
So did Mercer.
He wanted division.
I stepped beside my brother.
“His life matters as much as mine.””
Michael looked at me.
Mercer's smile disappeared.
Evelyn whispered, “Ryan.””
I didn't look at her.
“You spent our whole lives deciding which child mattered more.””
My voice shook.
“You were wrong.””
Silence.
“There was never a chosen child.””
Michael's eyes filled.
“There were just children.””
Evelyn lowered her head.
Mercer suddenly threw the drive toward the furnace.
Michael lunged.
So did Evelyn.
The drive struck the metal edge and bounced onto the floor.
I grabbed it.
Mercer ran.
Thomas moved to block him.
Mercer shoved past.
Thomas fell against a cabinet.
“Dad!””
The word escaped me automatically.
Thomas looked up.
He had heard it.
So had Michael.
I helped him stand.
“You called me Dad.””
“Don't make this weird.””
He laughed through tears.
Behind us, Evelyn sank into a chair.
Sirens stopped outside.
Doors slammed.
Voices echoed through the clinic.
“Federal agents!””
Mercer reached the hallway and froze.
He was trapped.
Within seconds, agents surrounded him.
Margaret appeared behind them.
She pointed toward the drive in my hand.
“That's the evidence.””
I gave it to the lead agent.
For the first time all night, a secret left my hands instead of entering them.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Ryan.””
I turned.
She seemed smaller now.
Not the mastermind.
Not the terrifying grandmother in the walls.
Just an old woman surrounded by the wreckage of her choices.
“I did love you,” she whispered.
I believed her.
That was the tragedy.
“I know.””
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“Can you forgive me?””
I looked toward Michael.
At the scars on his arm.
At Thomas.
At Sarah.
At Claire.
At Noah standing in the doorway.
Then at Lily.
“Not tonight.””
Agents approached Evelyn.
She didn't resist.
As they led her away, she stopped beside me.
“There is one last thing.””
I almost laughed.
“Of course there is.””
She looked at Emma.
Then Sarah.
“Emma's birth certificate.””
Sarah stiffened.
“What about it?””
Evelyn whispered:
“Ryan isn't listed as her father.””
My heart stopped.
Sarah went pale.
I stared at her.
“Why?””
May you like
Evelyn looked at me one final time.
“Because Emma has two biological fathers.””
