Chapter 4: The Empty Closet

For half a second, nobody moved.

Then I ran.

“Lily!””

I took the basement stairs two at a time, slammed my shoulder against the narrow passage wall, and raced toward the bedroom.

Behind me, Claire shouted my name.

I didn't stop.

All I could hear was her last sentence.

She came back for Lily.

I reached the loose panel and shoved through it.

The closet was empty.

“Lily?””

The bedroom door stood open.

My pulse exploded.

“LILY!””

I ran into the hallway.

Nothing.

Then a tiny voice answered from downstairs.

“Daddy?””

I nearly collapsed.

I found Lily standing at the bottom of the staircase, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

Emma stood beside her.

Both girls were barefoot.

I crossed the room and dropped to my knees.

“Come here.””

Lily frowned as I pulled her against me.

“Daddy, you're squeezing.””

“Sorry.””

I loosened my arms without letting go.

Emma watched us uncertainly.

I reached for her too.

After a moment, she stepped closer.

I held both girls.

For the first time since opening that wall, one thought became perfectly clear.

Whatever secrets the adults in this house had created, these children were not going to pay for them.

Claire entered the living room.

“Ryan.””

I stood.

“Lock every door.””

She hesitated.

“Now, Claire.””

She hurried toward the front entrance.

Thomas emerged from the hallway with Sarah behind him.

I looked at my father.

“You said my mother arranged for me to inherit this house.””

“Yes.””

“You said she's alive.””

“Yes.””

“And apparently she's been close enough to photograph Emma three months ago.””

Thomas nodded.

“So where is she?””

“I don't know.””

I stepped toward him.

“Wrong answer.””

“Ryan—”

“You appeared inside my walls carrying photographs. You've been hiding my daughter—”

“Emma wasn't hidden from you.””

“She was inside my damn house!””

Emma flinched.

I immediately lowered my voice.

Thomas noticed.

“So did I,” he said quietly.

“That's why I brought her here.””

I stared at him.

“You brought Emma?””

“Yes.””

Sarah moved beside him.

“We both did.””

My head snapped toward her.

“You put a five-year-old inside a wall?””

“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.””

“Then tell me how it was supposed to happen.””

Sarah swallowed.

“Thomas contacted me six weeks ago. He said your mother had found us.””

“Where?””

“West Virginia. We'd been moving every few months.””

Emma leaned against Sarah's leg.

Sarah rested a hand on her hair.

“Three months ago, I saw your mother outside our motel. She didn't approach us. She just watched.””

“And you didn't call the police?””

Thomas gave a humorless laugh.

“We tried that years ago.””

Sarah looked at me.

“Your mother has people who make reports disappear.””

I wanted to dismiss it as paranoia.

But there was a supposedly dead man in my living room and a daughter I hadn't known existed holding my hand.

Normal had left my life hours ago.

“Why bring Emma here?””

“Because this house contains evidence,” Thomas said.

“What evidence?””

“Records your mother couldn't destroy.””

“Where?””

He glanced toward the hidden passage.

“Somewhere she believed only you could access.””

I stared at him.

“Why me?””

Thomas slowly raised his left wrist.

The crescent birthmark was there.

“Our family has always called this a birthmark.””

He touched it.

“It isn't.””

My stomach tightened.

“What is it?””

“A marker.””

“For what?””

Thomas looked toward Lily.

I moved between them immediately.

“Don't look at her. Look at me.””

He did.

“The fertility study wasn't about infertility, Ryan. That was the cover.””

Claire returned from locking the back door.

“What was it really about?””

Thomas answered carefully.

“Hereditary traits.””

I almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe some secret experiment created a crescent on my wrist?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“The crescent existed first.””

That answer was worse.

Sarah guided the girls toward the couch.

“Emma, can you and Lily play quietly?””

Lily looked at me.

“Is Grandma coming?””

Every adult in the room froze.

I crouched.

“Why would you ask that?””

Lily hugged her rabbit tighter.

“Because she visits Emma.””

My mouth went dry.

“Grandma?””

Lily nodded.

“The lady from your pictures.””

Claire whispered, “Lily, you've seen her?””

“A lot.””

“When?””

“When you're sleeping.””

A chill crawled over my skin.

“Where do you see her?””

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

“My room.””

I stood so quickly the coffee table shook.

We rushed upstairs.

Lily's bedroom looked normal.

Pink blankets.

Crayons.

Books.

A night-light shaped like a moon.

Thomas immediately examined the walls.

I checked the closet.

Nothing.

Then Sarah noticed Lily's dresser.

“Ryan.””

There were scratches on the hardwood behind it.

Fresh scratches.

Thomas and I dragged the dresser aside.

Behind it was another panel.

Smaller.

Almost invisible beneath the wallpaper.

Claire covered her mouth.

“No.””

I ripped it open.

A narrow cavity ran between Lily's bedroom and the hidden passage.

Someone could have stood there.

Watching.

I aimed my flashlight inside.

On the floor lay a juice box.

A folded blanket.

And a silver hairbrush.

Lily smiled behind me.

“Grandma's brush.””

My blood turned cold.

Thomas picked it up.

“Ryan.””

Several strands of gray hair were tangled between the bristles.

Proof.

Someone had been there.

Claire suddenly backed toward the bed.

“I didn't know about this opening.””

I stared at her.

“You knew about the main passage.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my mother was alive.””

Her silence answered for her.

“How long?””

“Ryan…”

“How long have you known?””

“Six months.””

My chest tightened.

Six months.

She had slept beside me every night.

Kissed me goodbye every morning.

Watched me tuck Lily into bed.

And said nothing.

Before I could speak, Lily tugged my shirt.

“Daddy?””

“What, sweetheart?””

“Grandma gave me something.””

Every adult turned.

Lily walked to her toy chest and pulled out a small wooden box.

“I wasn't supposed to show you until my birthday.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a brass key.

Underneath it was a folded note.

Three words were written across the paper.

FOR RYAN ONLY.

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My mother's.

Ryan,

If you're reading this, Thomas has returned.

Do not trust him.

Do not trust Sarah.

And whatever you do—

do not let them take Lily below the house.

A floorboard creaked behind me.

I turned.

May you like

Thomas was standing in the doorway.

And he was staring at the key.
