Chapter 13: The Son I Never Knew
“Are you my dad?””
Noah's voice cracked on the last word.
I had imagined impossible things all night.
My dead father returning.
My dead mother returning.
A twin brother.
A daughter inside my wall.
But nothing prepared me for the fourteen-year-old boy standing ten feet away, waiting for me to decide whether he belonged to me.
I looked at Claire.
She was crying silently.
Then I looked back at him.
“I think I am.””
Noah's jaw tightened.
“You think?””
The hurt in his voice crushed me.
I walked toward him slowly.
“Nobody told me you existed until tonight.””
He searched my face.
“You didn't give me away?””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Every adult in the room went silent.
Noah noticed.
His expression hardened.
“Of course.””
He laughed bitterly.
“This is exactly what she said would happen.””
“Who?””
He pointed toward Sarah's mother.
“That woman.””
Sarah stared at her.
“Mom, what did you tell him?””
Her mother remained calm.
“The truth.””
“No,” I said.
“Apparently nobody in this building knows how to do that.””
Noah almost smiled.
Almost.
I stopped several feet away.
“I won't lie to you. I don't understand everything yet.””
“Do you have other kids?””
I glanced toward Lily.
“Yes.””
His eyes followed mine.
“And Emma?””
“Yes.””
Emma peeked from behind Sarah.
Noah swallowed.
“So everybody got a family except me.””
That sentence tore through the room.
Claire stepped forward.
“Noah.””
He looked at her.
Recognition flashed across his face.
“Miss Claire?””
She covered her mouth.
“You remember me?””
“You gave me that blue notebook.””
Claire started crying harder.
“I looked for you.””
“They said you stopped visiting.””
“I never stopped.””
His face changed.
“They told me you did.””
Sarah's mother sighed.
“Sentiment isn't helping.””
Noah turned on her.
“You said she forgot me.””
“She would have eventually.””
“No.””
Claire moved closer.
“I wouldn't have.””
Noah stared at her.
Then something in him cracked.
He looked down.
“I waited every Thursday.””
Claire made a broken sound.
I watched my wife cross the room.
She didn't hug him.
She simply stood near enough to let him decide.
After several seconds, Noah stepped into her arms.
Claire held him.
And suddenly I understood something.
Family wasn't hiding inside blood tests.
It was in who came back.
Who searched.
Who stayed.
Evelyn looked uncomfortable.
Good.
I turned toward Sarah's mother.
“What's your name?””
“Margaret Mitchell.””
“Margaret, why did you bring Noah here tonight?””
“To end this.””
“How?””
She looked at Evelyn.
“By destroying the program.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
“The program ended years ago.””
Margaret pulled a flash drive from her pocket.
“No. You moved it.””
Mercer's face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“From Nathan Bell.””
Claire gasped.
“He's alive?””
Margaret nodded.
“Barely.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Where?””
“Safe.””
I raised a hand.
“No more mysterious answers. Where is he?””
“County General. Registered under another name.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“He tried to warn me.””
“Yes.””
“Who attacked him?””
Margaret looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not me.””
Margaret smiled.
“I know.””
Everyone froze.
“Then who?””
Margaret looked toward Mercer.
Daniel Mercer went pale.
Michael noticed.
“You.””
Mercer backed away.
“Margaret.””
“You attacked Nathan.””
Thomas grabbed Mercer's arm.
“Is that true?””
Mercer pulled away.
“Nathan was going to expose everything.””
“That was the point!”” Michael shouted.
“You don't understand what exposure would do.””
I stared at him.
“Try me.””
Mercer's composure vanished.
“Do you think this is one family? One clinic?””
He pointed at the files.
“This research was funded by private organizations for decades. Evelyn became the face of it, but she wasn't the system.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“You told me the sponsors were gone.””
“I lied.””
For once, Evelyn looked betrayed.
It was almost poetic.
Mercer continued.
“Nathan found financial records linking the old program to current clinics.””
Margaret held up the drive.
“And now I have them.””
Mercer lunged.
Michael intercepted him.
They crashed into the table.
“Stop!””
I pulled Michael back while Thomas restrained Mercer.
Noah grabbed Lily and moved her away.
That small action hit me.
He didn't know her.
But he'd protected his little sister without thinking.
Mercer struggled.
“You release those records and people will come after every child connected to this!””
Margaret's expression hardened.
“Then we give the evidence to people who can protect them.””
“Who?””
“The FBI.””
Silence.
She held up her phone.
“They're already coming.””
Evelyn whispered, “What did you do?””
“What you should have done thirty years ago.””
Outside, distant sirens became audible.
Mercer stopped fighting.
For the first time, he looked terrified.
Then the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Darkness.
Someone screamed.
A door slammed.
When emergency lights returned, Mercer was gone.
So was the flash drive.
And Lily was standing beside an open hallway door.
“Daddy?””
I ran to her.
“What happened?””
She pointed into the darkness.
“The doctor took it.””
Michael grabbed a flashlight.
“Which way?””
But Lily shook her head.
“He didn't go alone.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who went with him?””
Lily looked across the room.
We followed her gaze.
May you like
The chair where Evelyn had been sitting was empty.
My mother was gone too.
