Chapter 6: The Plan She Made Before Emma Was Born
I couldn’t move.
The words blurred.
Long-Term Custody Strategy.
Those four words felt impossible.
Emma wasn’t even born when some of these papers were created.
I looked through the pages again.
Maybe I had misunderstood.
Maybe I was seeing something that wasn’t there.
But every page told the same story.
Dates.
Plans.
Notes.
A timeline.
Vanessa had been documenting our life before there was even a problem.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t look up.
“Who is Rachel?””
Silence.
I slowly raised my head.
“Answer me.””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“She’s my sister.””
I stared.
“Your sister?””
“Yes.””
“The person you’ve been sending these reports to?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She helps me.””
“With what?””
She didn’t answer.
I held up the paper.
“With controlling me?””
“No.””
“With controlling Emma?””
Her face changed.
“That’s not fair.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Fair?””
I pointed toward the cameras.
“Was this fair?””
I pointed toward the notebook.
“Was starving her fair?””
“I never starved her.””
“She told me she went a day without eating.””
“She was exaggerating.””
I looked at Emma.
She was standing at the bottom of the stairs, holding her rabbit.
She looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had spent years trying to prove she deserved kindness.
I walked over and picked her up.
She immediately wrapped her arms around me.
Vanessa watched.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
“You’re taking one night and destroying everything.””
“One night?””
My voice rose.
“One night?””
I pointed around the basement.
“This isn’t one night.””
Vanessa looked away.
Then she said something I never expected.
“I was protecting myself.””
I froze.
“What?””
She stepped closer.
“You think I wanted this?””
“You created files on your own family.””
“Because I knew this would happen.””
“What would happen?””
“You leaving.””
The room went quiet.
I stared at her.
“Leaving?””
She nodded.
“Men leave.””
The anger in her voice wasn’t about me.
It was about something older.
Something buried.
“My father left when I was six. Yours left when you were young too.””
I felt a chill.
“How do you know that?””
She didn’t answer.
I looked at the papers again.
She had researched me.
My childhood.
My fears.
My weaknesses.
Everything.
“You studied me.””
“I learned you.””
“That’s not love.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t understand.””
“No, Vanessa. I don’t.””
She looked at Emma.
“I was trying to build a family that couldn’t be broken.””
Emma whispered:
“By breaking me?””
Vanessa went silent.
That was the first time she looked at what she had done.
Not as a wife.
Not as a mother.
But as someone standing in front of the damage she created.
My phone suddenly rang.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“This is Rachel.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face turned white.
“I know you found the basement.””
I said nothing.
Rachel continued.
“And before you make any decisions, you need to know the truth about why Vanessa did all of this.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What truth?””
There was a pause.

Then Rachel said:
“Emma isn’t the only child Vanessa has been keeping secrets from you about.””
