Chapter 11: The Man Behind the Plan
The voice on the phone belonged to someone who sounded completely calm.
That bothered me more than anger would have.
People who are scared make mistakes.
People who are guilty panic.
But this man sounded prepared.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Marcus.””
Vanessa watched me closely.
I noticed something.
She wasn’t afraid of him.
She was afraid of me hearing him.
“What do you want?””
“I want you to understand.””
I almost laughed.
“Understand what?””
“That Vanessa was not trying to hurt Emma.””
I looked around the room.
The cameras.
The locks.
The notebooks.
The files.
“Then what exactly was she trying to do?””
Marcus sighed.
“Protect her.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“From what?””
“From you.””
The room went silent.
I felt something inside me shift.
Not because I believed him.
Because I couldn’t understand how someone could create this entire nightmare and still believe they were the victim.
“Explain.””
Marcus continued.
“Vanessa has spent years studying family trauma. She knows what happens when children grow up in unstable homes.””
I looked at Rachel.
She shook her head slightly.
Like she already knew where this was going.
“Go on.””
“She believed you were repeating the same mistakes your father made.””
My face hardened.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I gripped the phone.
“You don’t know anything about my father.””
Marcus’s voice stayed calm.
“Vanessa knew.””
I turned toward her.
“What did you tell him?””
She looked away.
That was answer enough.
Marcus continued.
“She believed you were emotionally unavailable.””
I laughed quietly.
“So her solution was to emotionally destroy my daughter?””
“No.””
“Then what was the solution?””
A pause.
“She wanted Emma dependent.””
The word echoed.
Dependent.
Not safe.
Not loved.
Dependent.
I looked upstairs.
At the room where my daughter slept.
Or tried to sleep.
“Why?””
Marcus answered:
“Because dependent children don’t leave.””
Nobody spoke.
Even Vanessa looked uncomfortable now.
I lowered the phone.
“Who are you to her?””
Another pause.
Then:
“I helped her.””
“With what?””
“Her research.””
My stomach tightened.
Research.
Everything suddenly felt colder.
“You were part of this?””
“I was trying to prevent something worse.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
Marcus heard.
“Rachel is angry because she disagrees with our methods.””
Our methods.
I repeated those words silently.
“Our methods?””
Marcus continued.
“Vanessa and I worked together years ago.””
“On what?””
“Family behavior.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“You knew him before me.””
“Yes.””
“Before we married?””
“Yes.””
The answer was barely a whisper.
I closed my eyes.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life I didn’t know.
“Why did you marry me?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead she said:
“Because I loved you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I looked at the documents.
“You chose me.””
Her face changed.
Marcus spoke.
“She chose you because you were a good candidate.””
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Stop.””
But Marcus continued.
“Stable career. History of abandonment. Strong desire to be a good father.””
My hands went cold.
“You evaluated me.””
Nobody answered.
“You evaluated me before we met.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I needed to know.””
I stared at her.
“Needed to know what?””
“If you were safe.””
I looked at Emma’s drawings on the wall.
The family pictures.
Everything suddenly felt like a performance.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One photo.
A picture of Vanessa standing outside my office three weeks before we met.
Another photo.
Me leaving work.
Another.
My old apartment.
My blood ran cold.
Marcus spoke through the phone.
“Daniel.””
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“You think you discovered Vanessa’s secret.””
The call became silent.
Then he said:
“But you haven’t discovered yours.””
I stared at the phone.
“What secret?””
Marcus answered:
May you like
“The reason Vanessa chose you is because she already knew something about your past that even you didn’t know.””
The call ended.
