Chapter 12: The Past Buried Under My Name

I stood there staring at the blank phone screen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

It felt like the entire world had stopped.

Then Rachel said:

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“What did he mean?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because Rachel had answers.

Too many answers.

“What does he know about my past?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked away.

That was enough.

I walked toward her.

“You knew.””

“Daniel…”

“You knew something about me before we met.””

She swallowed.

“I knew about your family.””

I felt my anger rising.

“What about my family?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her voice became quiet.

“Your mother.””

The room went still.

My mother.

I hadn’t heard that word connected to anything serious in years.

“What about her?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She contacted me.””

I froze.

“My mother is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

She looked down.

“Before she died, she left information.””

My chest tightened.

“What information?””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Vanessa didn’t find you randomly.””

I looked at her.

“She was looking for you.””

The sentence felt impossible.

“Why?””

Rachel looked at the papers.

“Because your mother asked her to.””

I stared.

“No.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“My mother hated secrets.””

Vanessa whispered:

“She was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“Of what your father did.””

The room became painfully quiet.

My father.

The person I had spent years trying not to think about.

The man who left when I was young.

The man my mother refused to discuss.

“What did he do?””

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

“He hurt people.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Is that true?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“There are records.””

My heart pounded.

“What kind of records?””

“Behavioral reports.””

I almost laughed.

“More reports?””

Rachel looked at the floor.

“Your father had patterns.””

I felt sick.

“Patterns like Vanessa?””

Nobody answered.

I walked to the window.

Outside, my neighborhood looked normal.

Lights on.

Cars parked.

Families inside their homes.

And mine was falling apart.

Emma came downstairs.

“Daddy?””

I turned immediately.

She looked worried.

I forced myself to kneel.

“Hey.””

“Are you okay?””

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted to protect her from everything.

But I remembered what happened when adults protected children with lies.

So I told the truth.

“I’m trying to understand something.””

She nodded.

“Okay.””

That one word broke me.

Because she trusted me.

After everything.

She still trusted me.

I hugged her.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered:

“I never wanted this.””

I looked back.

“What did you want?””

Her eyes filled.

“I wanted to prove I wasn’t like him.””

“Your father?””

She nodded.

“I thought if I created the perfect family, I could erase what happened.””

I looked at Emma.

“You created fear.””

“I know.””

The answer surprised me.

She knew.

Finally.

She knew.

Lily stood near the door.

“You always know after it’s too late.””

Vanessa looked at her.

And Lily’s expression softened slightly.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something closer to grief.

Then Rachel’s phone rang.

She answered.

A few seconds later, her face changed.

“What?””

Everyone looked at her.

“What happened?”” I asked.

She lowered the phone slowly.

“It’s the police.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

She looked directly at me.

“They found something.””

“What?””

Rachel swallowed.

“A hidden room.””

I felt cold.

“Where?””

She looked toward Vanessa.

May you like

Then said:

“In your house.””
