Chapter 6: The Mother Who Never Died

Nobody spoke.

The words hung over the dining table like a threat.

My mother had supposedly died fifteen years earlier.

I had attended her funeral. I had watched a coffin lowered into the ground. I had spent years visiting her grave.

Now Michael was telling me she had been living under another identity.

I turned toward Evelyn.

"Is he telling the truth?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Your mother survived.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Where is she?""

"She was living with the Whitmores.""

"Why would she pretend to be their adopted daughter?""

Evelyn took a trembling breath.

"Because your father wanted her dead. The Whitmores helped her disappear. They gave her a new identity and moved her somewhere he couldn't find her.""

My father laughed.

"That's a beautiful story.""

Michael pointed at him.

"Shut up.""

My father turned toward me.

"Mark, listen carefully. Your mother was mentally unstable. She believed everyone was conspiring against her. Evelyn helped her escape, and now they're trying to make me look like a criminal.""

I stared at him.

"Then why did you hide Michael?""

He didn't answer.

"Why did you fake his death?""

Still nothing.

"Why did you threaten my daughter?""

My father finally raised his voice.

"Because your mother stole something that belonged to me!""

Evelyn flinched.

Michael stood straighter.

"There it is.""

I looked at my father.

"What did she steal?""

He pointed at the papers in my hand.

"The company records. The original ownership documents. Everything.""

I shook my head.

"Those documents aren't worth imprisoning your son.""

My father moved closer.

"You have no idea how much money is involved.""

"I don't care about your money.""

"You should.""

He leaned toward me.

"Because your daughter is the only person who can inherit it.""

I felt sick.

"What are you talking about?""

Evelyn opened another envelope.

Inside was a legal document bearing my father's signature.

It transferred controlling ownership of Bennett Holdings into a trust established twenty-five years earlier.

The beneficiary was listed as:

*The Firstborn Daughter of Richard Bennett.*

I read it twice.

"My father never had a daughter.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"He did.""

My father slammed his hand against the table.

"Stop!""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Is this why you married me?""

She shook her head desperately.

"No, Mark. I didn't know about the trust until recently.""

"But you knew about Michael.""

"Yes.""

"And you knew our daughter might be involved.""

Vanessa nodded.

I felt betrayed in a way I couldn't describe.

"How could you keep this from me?""

She stepped closer.

"Because I was afraid you'd do exactly what you're doing now. You'd confront him, and he'd hurt you.""

I looked at her.

"That's not a reason to let our daughter live in fear.""

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I know.""

Then Lily appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Mommy?""

Vanessa immediately turned.

"Sweetheart, go back to your room.""

Lily held the stuffed rabbit against her chest.

"Is Grandpa angry?""

My father looked up.

His expression changed completely.

For the first time since entering the house, he smiled warmly.

"Come here, little one.""

Lily didn't move.

I stepped between them.

"Don't talk to her.""

My father sighed.

"Mark, you're making a mistake.""

"Get out.""

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he reached into his jacket and placed a small photograph on the table.

It showed my mother standing beside a hospital bed.

She looked older, but unmistakably alive.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Mark, if you ever see this, don't trust the woman who raised you.

My hands began trembling.

I looked toward Evelyn.

"Who raised me?""

Evelyn started crying.

"Your mother.""

I frowned.

"That makes no sense.""

She looked at Vanessa.

"Your mother was switched too.""

The room fell silent.

I stared at her.

"What?""

Evelyn continued.

"The woman you called your mother for thirty-nine years wasn't the woman who gave birth to you.""

I felt the floor disappear beneath my feet.

"Then who was she?""

Evelyn looked toward my father.

He was no longer smiling.

"Her name was Margaret Whitmore.""

The name from the newspaper clipping.

The woman who had supposedly adopted my sister.

I slowly turned toward the photograph.

Two babies.

Two women.

One stolen identity.

And suddenly, the entire story became more terrifying.

My father had not simply hidden a child.

He had built an entire family around a lie.

Michael reached for my hand.

"Mark, there's one more thing.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He pointed toward Lily.

"She's not the only person in this house whose birth certificate is false.""

Before I could respond, the doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then a woman's voice came through the intercom.

"Mark Bennett? My name is Margaret Whitmore.""

I froze.

The woman continued.

"I know you've been told I'm dead. But I'm standing outside your house.""

A pause.

Then she said something that made Vanessa collapse into a chair.

May you like

"Please open the door. I'm Lily's biological mother.""

And behind her, standing in the driveway, was a young woman holding a photograph of Michael.
