Chapter 14: The Last Child of the Bennett Family
The little girl stood beside the entrance, clutching the silver bracelet.
She looked about eleven.
Her dark hair fell across her forehead, and her eyes were fixed on my mother.
I looked at the woman beside me.
"Who is she?""
My mother wiped her cheeks.
"Her name is Grace.""
I stared at her.
"Another child?""
She nodded.
"Your father's youngest daughter.""
Richard, now handcuffed, suddenly turned around.
"Get that girl out of here!""
One of the officers pushed him toward the staircase.
"Keep moving, sir.""
But Richard continued shouting.
"She has no right to be here!""
Grace flinched.
My mother stepped in front of her.
"Nobody is taking her anywhere.""
I crouched.
"Hello, sweetheart. I'm Mark.""
She looked at me cautiously.
"I know.""
"How?""
"Mom showed me your pictures.""
I glanced at my mother.
She gave me a sad smile.
"Grace is the child I was carrying when Richard arranged my disappearance.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"You're saying she's my sister?""
"Yes.""
Grace stepped closer.
"Are you angry with me?""
I shook my head.
"No. Why would I be?""
She looked down.
"Because everyone says our family is bad.""
I took her small hand.
"Families aren't defined by the worst things one person does.""
She nodded slowly.
Then she asked a question that broke my heart.
"Can I meet Lily?""
I smiled.
"She's going to be very happy to meet you.""
But before we could leave, Claire stepped forward.
"Mark, we need to talk about the inheritance.""
I almost laughed.
"After everything we've discovered, you still want to talk about money?""
Claire shook her head.
"It's not about money anymore. It's about stopping Richard's people from taking control of the trust.""
My mother handed me the document she had been carrying.
It was the original trust agreement.
I read through the pages.
The document named the biological descendants of my mother as beneficiaries.
But there was a clause I hadn't seen before.
If the original identities of the children were proven to have been deliberately falsified, control of the trust would pass to an independent guardian until every surviving child reached adulthood.
I looked at Claire.
"Who is the guardian?""
She pointed toward the final page.
A name appeared beneath the legal authorization.
*Mark Bennett.*
I stared at it.
"Why me?""
My mother answered.
"Because you were the only child Richard never managed to control.""
I shook my head.
"I don't want his money.""
"Then don't use it for yourself," she replied.
"Use it to find the children he separated. There are families who deserve answers.""
I looked at Michael.
He nodded.
"She's right.""
Daniel stood near the police officers.
His hands were cuffed, but he looked strangely relieved.
I approached him.
"Are you going to tell them everything?""
He nodded.
"Everything.""
"Even what you did to Michael?""
He looked at my brother.
"Especially that.""
Michael studied him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Michael said something I never expected.
"I don't know if I can forgive you.""
Daniel lowered his head.
"I wouldn't ask you to.""
"But if you're telling the truth, then you were another child Richard destroyed.""
Daniel looked up.
Michael continued.
"That doesn't excuse what you did. But I hope you find a way to become someone better.""
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"Thank you.""
The officers led him away for questioning.
My father was already in another police vehicle.
As Richard passed me, he stopped.
"Mark.""
I looked at him.
"You think you've won?""
I didn't answer.
He leaned closer.
"Your mother still hasn't told you what happened to Margaret.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"She's dead.""
Richard smiled.
"Are you sure?""
Then the officers pushed him into the vehicle.
I turned toward my mother.
"What's he talking about?""
She looked devastated.
"Margaret survived.""
I stared at her.
"But she died fifteen years ago.""
"That wasn't Margaret in the coffin.""
I closed my eyes.
Another body.
Another false funeral.
Another lie.
My mother continued.
"Your aunt has been living under another identity. She helped me escape, but Richard found her six months ago.""
"Where is she?""
My mother looked toward Claire.
Claire slowly pulled out her phone.
"She's here.""
She showed me a photograph.
An elderly woman was sitting in a hospital bed.
Beside her stood a nurse.
The woman looked directly into the camera.
I recognized her immediately.
The woman I had called Mother for thirty-nine years.
I couldn't speak.
My mother took my hand.
"Mark, she wants to see you.""
I looked at the photograph again.
For years, I had believed my family began with a mother and father who loved each other.
Now I understood that my entire childhood had been built around an elaborate deception.
But one question remained.
If Margaret was alive, why had she allowed me to believe she was dead?
And what had she done that made Richard so determined to keep her hidden?
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
*Mark, don't believe everything your mother tells you. Ask her what happened to the third baby.*
I looked up.
My mother had seen the message.
Her face went pale.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Margaret is right. I haven't told you everything.""
