Chapter 3: The Photograph That Changed Everything
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
Vanessa was standing beside my mother, wearing a white dress and holding a baby blanket.
She looked younger, but there was no mistaking her face.
I turned toward my wife.
"Explain this.""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Vanessa!""
She took a step backward.
"Where did Michael get that?""
"That's what I just asked you.""
Lily moved closer to me.
I placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Sweetheart, go downstairs and wait in the kitchen.""
She looked frightened.
"Will the man hurt Uncle Michael?""
I glanced at my brother.
"Not while I'm here.""
Lily reluctantly left.
The moment her footsteps disappeared, I held the photograph up again.
"Why were you with my mother?""
Vanessa stared at the floor.
"Because I knew her.""
"That's not an answer.""
"I met her when I was a teenager.""
"How?""
She took a shaky breath.
"My mother worked for your family. She was a nurse. She helped take care of your mother during the final months of her life.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
"Mom wasn't sick for months.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"That's what your father told you.""
Michael shifted on the mattress.
"Tell him the rest.""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Don't.""
"Tell him," Michael repeated.
I stepped between them.
"Both of you are going to explain everything.""
Vanessa finally spoke.
"Your mother discovered that your father had been hiding money. Not ordinary money, Mark. Millions. He was using fake companies, forged signatures, and accounts under other people's names.""
I shook my head.
"My father owned a construction company. He made money.""
"Not that much.""
She continued.
"Your mother threatened to report him. She had documents. She also discovered that someone had been altering hospital records.""
I looked at the photograph.
"What does that have to do with the children?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Your mother gave birth to twins.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I stared at her.
"What?""
Michael closed his eyes.
"She never told us.""
Vanessa nodded.
"Your father told everyone one baby had died shortly after birth. But both babies survived.""
I couldn't speak.
I had grown up believing I was an only child until Michael came along two years later.
But Vanessa was saying there had been another baby.
"Where is the other child?"" I asked.
Vanessa began crying.
"That's what your mother was trying to find out.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Your father switched the hospital records. He arranged for one baby to be registered under another name.""
I shook my head.
"Why would he do that?""
"Because he wanted control," Michael replied.
"Your mother knew something about that child. Something your father was terrified would become public.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The baby was wrapped in a pale blue blanket.
A tiny silver bracelet circled its wrist.
On the bracelet was a name.
*Lily.*
My stomach dropped.
I looked toward the stairs.
"My daughter?""
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"No, Mark. Not our Lily. The baby in that photograph was someone else.""
"Then why is the name the same?""
"I don't know.""
Michael reached for the photograph.
"Look at the date.""
I turned it over.
The photograph had been taken twenty-five years earlier.
I was thirty-nine.
The math made no sense.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
"Your mother named one of the twins Lily before your father changed the records. She told me that name was important.""
I felt dizzy.
"Then why did you marry me?""
Vanessa looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
"Because I loved you.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She lowered her head.
"I knew who you were when we met.""
A terrible silence filled the room.
"How long?""
"Since the beginning.""
I stepped away from her.
"You knew about my family?""
"I knew your father was dangerous. I didn't know everything.""
"And you let me believe you were just an ordinary woman who happened to fall in love with me?""
"Mark, I did love you.""
Michael suddenly laughed.
It wasn't a happy sound.
"She wasn't the only one who knew.""
I turned.
"What does that mean?""
He reached toward his mattress and pulled out another folded document.
"This is the hospital record your father wanted me to destroy.""
I opened it.
The page contained two birth entries.
Both were dated the same day.
One baby had been registered as Mark Bennett.
The second entry had been crossed out.
A handwritten note appeared beneath it.
Transfer authorized by Dr. Richard Hale.
I recognized the doctor's name.
He had signed my mother's death certificate fifteen years earlier.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Who is Richard Hale?""
She hesitated.
"Your mother's physician.""
"Where is he now?""
Michael answered before she could.
"He's the man who visited this house yesterday.""
My fingers tightened around the paper.
"The man in the camera recording?""
Michael nodded.
"He brought your father something.""
"What?""
"A black leather briefcase. Inside was the original hospital ledger.""
I looked at the document again.
There was one final line at the bottom.
A name.
Not mine.
Not Michael's.
*Lily Bennett — Biological mother: Vanessa Bennett.*
I slowly raised my eyes.
Vanessa was crying openly now.
I couldn't understand what I was reading.
"My daughter is your daughter," I said.
"Yes.""
"Then whose baby was my mother holding?""
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
"Mark, there's something you need to understand about Lily.""
My phone suddenly vibrated.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice came through, calm and familiar.
"Hello, son.""
I stopped breathing.
It was my father.
"Before you do anything foolish, look outside your front window.""
I turned.
A black sedan was parked across the street.
The rear window slowly lowered.
And sitting inside was the man I had buried three years earlier.
May you like
My father smiled.
"Now, Mark, let's talk about which child you brought home from the hospital.""
