Chapter 9: What Robert Saw

The cemetery was fifteen minutes from the reception hall.

I didn't go alone.

I ignored the message's demand.

Michael came with me.

So did Daniel and David.

Sabrina stayed behind with the police.

We arrived under a gray afternoon sky.

Robert's grave sat beneath an old oak tree.

Flowers covered the stone.

I walked toward it slowly.

Michael stayed beside me.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Did Dad really have another son?””

“Yes.””

“Did you hate him?””

“No.””

“Did you hate Arthur?””

I looked at the grave.

“I did.””

Michael was quiet.

Then he asked,

“Do you hate me?””

I turned toward him.

“Never.””

He nodded.

“I needed to hear that.””

We reached the grave.

Nothing looked disturbed.

David searched the surrounding ground.

Daniel checked the nearby path.

I stood before Robert's name.

Then I noticed something beneath the flowers.

A small brass key.

I picked it up.

A tag was attached.

*17-B.*

David looked at it.

“That's a storage unit.””

I stared at him.

“How do you know?””

“Your husband's old storage company used that numbering system.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“He kept records there.””

Michael looked at me.

“What records?””

I suddenly remembered.

Three days before Robert died, he'd handed me a brass key.

He'd told me to keep it somewhere safe.

I'd forgotten about it.

Or perhaps I had forced myself to forget.

“I know where it is.””

The storage facility was nearly abandoned.

Unit 17-B sat at the end of a narrow corridor.

The padlock opened with the brass key.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Old company files.

Photographs.

Tax records.

Bank statements.

And one wooden box with my name written across the lid.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

*Evelyn,*

*If you're reading this, something happened to me.*

I stopped.

Michael stepped closer.

“Keep going.””

I read aloud.

*I made mistakes. I hurt you. I lied about Nathan. But there is something worse.*

My throat tightened.

*Arthur did steal money, but he wasn't the person I feared most.*

Daniel whispered,

I did.

*The person draining the company has access to our home. Someone close enough to know every password, every account, every conversation.*

I looked at Michael.

He looked horrified.

The letter continued.

*I suspect Claudia. But I don't have proof.*

I exhaled.

Claudia had lied.

But that wasn't the whole story.

There was another page.

*If I die before I can expose her, don't confront her.*

Then the final line.

*Because Claudia is not working alone.*

The room went silent.

Michael looked at me.

“Who else?””

I turned the page.

There was a name.

Not Arthur.

Not Nathan.

Not Sabrina.

Not Claudia.

My own name.

*Evelyn Reed.*

I stared at it.

“No.””

David took the letter.

His expression became confused.

“This could be forged.””

Daniel picked up another document.

“Not this.””

He held up a bank statement.

It showed a transfer made eighteen years ago.

The destination account was in my name.

Michael stared.

“Mom…”

“I never opened that account.””

Daniel pointed to the signature.

It was mine.

Perfectly reproduced.

Someone had forged my identity.

Then I saw the final item inside the box.

A small cassette tape.

A handwritten label read:

*Play only when Evelyn is ready to know the truth.*

David found an old player in another box.

He inserted the tape.

Static crackled.

Then Robert's voice filled the storage unit.

Weak.

Breathing heavily.

“Evelyn…”

My knees nearly buckled.

Michael grabbed my hand.

Robert continued.

“If you're hearing this, you need to understand something.””

A long pause.

“I wasn't killed because of the money.””

The tape hissed.

“I was killed because I discovered who Michael really was.””

Michael's face went white.

“What does that mean?””

Robert's voice continued.

“And Evelyn…”

The recording crackled.

“I am sorry.””

May you like

Then came the sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“Michael isn't my son.””
