Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew
I didn't answer immediately.
I took the wig off.
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.
Michael stared at my shaved head.
His face drained of color.
“Oh my God.””
Someone behind him whispered, “What happened?””
Michael stepped toward me.
“Mom.””
“I woke up like this.””
His eyes moved to the scrape above my ear.
“Who did that?””
“I don't know.””
Sabrina crossed her arms.
“This is insane.””
I turned toward her.
“You're right.””
She blinked.
“I am?””
“Someone entered your fiancé's mother's bedroom, shaved her head, left a note wearing your perfume, and took a photograph while she slept.””
Sabrina's face hardened.
“And you're accusing me?””
“I didn't say your name.””
“You didn't have to.””
Michael looked between us.
“Stop.””
His voice cracked.
“Both of you.””
Sabrina grabbed his hand.
“Michael, you know me.””
He pulled his hand away.
“What I know right now is that my mother was attacked in our house.””
“Our house?”” I repeated.
He looked at me.
“Mom…”
“You said our house.””
“I meant—”
“No. It's fine.””
I stepped closer.
“I want you to answer one question.””
He nodded.
“Did you give Sabrina a key to the guest room?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Sabrina answered for him.
“She has a key to the entire house.””
My chest tightened.
Michael turned sharply.
“Sabrina.””
“What?””
“Why did you say that?””
“Because it's true.””
I looked at her.
“Then you could have entered my room.””
She laughed.
“You think I shaved your head?””
“I think you know more than you're telling me.””
Her eyes flashed.
“You've hated me since the day Michael proposed.””
“No.””
“You've spent three years trying to make him choose between us.””
“No.””
“You've controlled his money, his career, his life—”
I interrupted her.
“His father died when Michael was nineteen.””
The room went silent.
I kept my voice low.
“His father left him nothing except debt. I worked twenty-two years to build what I have. I helped Michael through college.
I bought his first company. I paid his medical bills when he got sick.””
Sabrina scoffed.
“And now you're using your money to control his marriage.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
I raised the note.
“I'm using the truth to protect my son.””
David appeared beside the stage.
I hadn't even seen him enter.
He leaned toward me.
“Evelyn, we need to leave.””
Michael heard him.
“Why?””
David looked at my son.
“Because I found something.””
He handed me a folder.
My fingers went cold.
“What is this?””
“Bank records.””
I opened it.
Several pages had been highlighted.
Transfers.
Wire instructions.
Account numbers.
My account numbers.
But I had never authorized them.
Michael leaned over my shoulder.
“Mom, what's that?””
I turned the page.
A transfer request dated two weeks earlier.
*$8,500,000 — Pending Authorization.*
The destination account was listed under a company I'd never heard of.
Sabrina looked at the document.
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
David saw it too.
Michael noticed.
“Sabrina?””
She stepped backward.
“I don't know anything about that.””
David calmly opened the next page.
“There are three more.””
Michael's voice became quieter.
“Three more what?””
“Transfers.””
David placed them on the table.
“One for four million. One for six million. One for three-point-five.””
Michael stared at the numbers.
“That adds up to…”
“Twenty-two million,” I said.
Sabrina's champagne glass slipped from her hand.
It shattered against the floor.
Everyone turned.
She whispered, “That's impossible.””
David looked directly at her.
“It would be.””
He pulled out one final page.
“If the authorization hadn't been made from a device registered to this house.””
Michael went completely still.
I looked at my son.
“Who else has access to your computer?””
He didn't answer.
Because behind him, his bride suddenly said something that made the entire ballroom go silent.
“I know who did it.””
May you like
Then she looked at me.
“But it wasn't me.””
