Chapter 5: Half the Fortune

Nobody moved.

Daniel Mercer looked older than the photograph but not nearly old enough to have vanished for eighteen years.

His gray suit was immaculate.

His hands were folded casually in front of him.

Like he hadn't just walked into my son's wedding carrying the ghost of my husband's secrets.

Michael stepped toward him.

“Daniel?””

Daniel smiled.

“Hello, Michael.””

“How are you alive?””

A few guests gasped.

Daniel shrugged.

“That's a complicated story.””

David moved between Daniel and me.

“Don't come any closer.””

Daniel stopped.

“I didn't come here to hurt Evelyn.””

“You've already caused enough damage,” David said.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“I didn't shave her head.””

Michael looked at me.

“Mom?””

I couldn't stop staring at Daniel.

“Why are you here?””

He reached inside his jacket.

David immediately stiffened.

“Slowly.””

Daniel pulled out a small envelope.

He held it up.

“Your husband left this for you.””

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“I never saw that.””

“I know.””

“Where did you get it?””

“From the safety deposit box.””

David's eyes narrowed.

“Which bank?””

“First Southern.””

David looked at me.

I shook my head.

“Your father opened it,” Daniel said to Michael.

“But your mother was the only person authorized to access it after his death.””

Michael turned to me.

“Why didn't you ever tell me?””

I couldn't look at him.

“Because your father asked me not to.””

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“That's not what he asked.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“He asked you to protect Michael.””

“I did.””

“No.””

Daniel's voice sharpened.

“You protected the family name.””

The ballroom seemed to disappear.

I could hear only Michael breathing beside me.

Daniel continued.

“Your husband discovered that his business partner was stealing from the company. He confronted him.””

“Who?””

“Arthur Bell.””

I remembered the name.

My husband's closest business partner.

The man who had stood beside his coffin.

Daniel opened the envelope.

“He was going to expose Arthur.””

Michael stared at him.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father was threatened.””

I whispered, “He never told me.””

“He tried.””

Daniel pulled out another document.

“Then he died.””

Michael looked at the papers.

“Are you saying my father was murdered?””

“No.””

Daniel's eyes met mine.

“I'm saying his death was convenient.””

David took the document.

“This is a copy of the original company ledger.””

Michael leaned closer.

Numbers filled the page.

Millions had been moved through shell companies.

One name appeared repeatedly.

*Bell Holdings.*

I felt dizzy.

“Arthur took the money.””

Daniel nodded.

“And he wasn't alone.””

Michael looked at Sabrina.

Her face had gone pale.

“What does she have to do with this?””

Daniel answered.

“Nothing.””

Sabrina closed her eyes.

Michael stared at her.

“Then why did you know Daniel?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Because Sabrina was investigating Arthur.””

I looked at her.

“You?””

She nodded.

“I found out what he was doing.””

“Why?””

“Because my father worked for him.””

That stopped me.

Sabrina wiped her eyes.

“My father knew Arthur was stealing. He was scared to talk. When he tried, Arthur threatened our family.””

Michael whispered, “And you never told me?””

“I wanted to.””

“When?””

“Before today.””

He shook his head.

“You should have told me everything.””

“I was trying to find proof.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Then why did someone try to transfer my money?””

Daniel's face became grim.

“Because they failed to steal your husband's money.””

He pointed at the documents.

“They've spent eighteen years trying to finish what they started.””

David frowned.

“Why now?””

Daniel looked at Sabrina.

“Because the wedding changed everything.””

Michael looked confused.

“What does my wedding have to do with twenty-two million dollars?””

I answered.

“The gift.””

Daniel nodded.

“The moment that money entered Michael's name, it would become easier to reach.””

Sabrina's lips trembled.

“So that's why they needed the transfer.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He reached into his pocket again.

“This wasn't about the gift.””

He placed another photograph on the table.

It showed my house.

The guest room.

And a man standing beside my sleeping body.

Michael picked it up.

“Who is that?””

I leaned closer.

My blood ran cold.

I recognized the watch.

I had seen it that morning.

On someone's wrist.

Daniel whispered,

“That man isn't the thief.””

He pointed to the figure.

“He's the person who hired him.””

Michael looked at me.

“Mom, who has been inside our house?””

I stared at the photograph.

Then I saw the face.

May you like

And my knees nearly gave out.

Because the man standing over my bed was someone I had hugged less than an hour earlier.
