Chapter 7: The Secret Buried Beneath Our Family Estate

At 11:47 that night, I stood outside the old Cross family estate with a photograph of my daughter in one hand and my father's final letter in the other.

I hadn't slept.

I hadn't eaten.

And I couldn't stop thinking about Daniel's words.

Father mentions Emily's mother. He says Victoria knows why the accident happened.

Victoria had never told me anything about the accident that I didn't already know.

At least, that's what I'd believed.

The estate stood on twelve acres outside Dallas. My father had built it when our family business was still growing. After his death, Daniel and I rarely visited.

Marcus parked near the entrance.

"Sir, the perimeter is secure.""

"Any sign of Daniel?""

"He arrived twenty minutes ago.""

I stepped out.

Daniel was standing beneath the porch light, holding an old leather briefcase.

His face looked exhausted.

"You're late," he said.

"Your messages have made the last few hours rather complicated.""

He didn't smile.

"Did you bring the USB drive?""

I showed him.

"Everything is here.""

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

"Can we speak privately?""

"No," I replied.

He nodded slowly.

"Fair enough.""

We entered the house.

The smell of old wood and leather brought back memories of my childhood. My father used to sit in the library every evening, reading financial reports while Daniel and I played chess on the carpet.

He always said the same thing.

"Money can buy comfort, boys. It cannot buy character.""

I wondered what he would think of us now.

Daniel led me down a narrow staircase behind the library.

At the bottom was a reinforced steel door.

He entered a code.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a small archive room filled with filing cabinets, old computers, and boxes marked with dates.

My father's handwriting covered several labels.

Daniel placed his briefcase on the table.

"He told me never to open this room unless something happened to the foundation.""

"Why didn't you tell me about it?""

"Because I thought I could fix everything without involving you.""

I stared at him.

"That's what you said when you transferred the money.""

He lowered his eyes.

Then he opened a drawer and removed a small digital recorder.

A label was attached.

*FOR ALEXANDER AND DANIEL.*

My hands felt strangely cold.

Daniel pressed play.

A few seconds of static filled the room.

Then my father's voice emerged.

"Alexander. Daniel. If you're listening to this, something has gone terribly wrong.""

I closed my eyes.

It had been three years since I'd heard his voice.

He continued.

"I need you to understand that the Cross Education Foundation is being targeted from within. Richard Whitmore has been approaching people connected to our charitable accounts. He believes the foundation is an opportunity to enrich himself.""

Daniel looked at me.

The recording continued.

"I have evidence of unauthorized transfers. But Richard isn't acting alone. Someone inside our family has been providing him with confidential information.""

I felt Daniel shift beside me.

"Father," he whispered.

My father's voice became quieter.

"I don't know which of my sons has been compromised. I pray it isn't either of you.""

The recording paused.

Then he continued.

"There's another matter. Victoria's accident.""

I froze.

"Six weeks before the collision, I received a report that a vehicle belonging to a Whitmore subsidiary had been following her. At the time, I suspected it was connected to a business dispute.""

My heart began pounding.

"On the day of the accident, that vehicle was seen near the intersection.""

I looked at Daniel.

He looked equally shocked.

My father continued.

"I asked Victoria to meet me. She refused. She said she had discovered something that could destroy several people connected to the foundation.""

I gripped the table.

"What did she discover?""

The recording didn't answer.

Instead, my father said:

"If Victoria hasn't told Alexander, she has her reasons. Protect her. Protect Emily. And whatever happens, do not allow Richard Whitmore to gain control of the foundation.""

Then came a final sentence.

"One more thing. The original accident report is not the original report.""

The recording stopped.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Finally, I turned toward Daniel.

"Where are the accident documents?""

He opened another drawer.

Inside were three folders.

One contained copies of my father's financial records.

Another contained Northstar contracts.

The third was labeled:

*VICTORIA CROSS — VEHICLE COLLISION.*

I opened it.

The first page was a police report.

The second was an insurance assessment.

The third was a photograph of the intersection where the accident had happened.

But the fourth document was different.

It was a copy of an email sent two days after the crash.

The sender was a detective whose name I recognized from the original investigation.

The recipient was an attorney representing a company owned by Richard Whitmore.

The subject line read:

*Collision Evidence — Final Adjustment.*

I read the email.

The secondary vehicle footage has been removed from the submitted case file as requested. The original driver statement remains available if further clarification is needed.

I looked up.

"Someone removed footage?""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what Father suspected.""

I flipped through the remaining pages.

Then I found something that made my chest tighten.

A photograph showed a black SUV parked across the street from the hospital on the day Emily was admitted.

On the back, my father's handwriting read:

Same vehicle. Same registration. Whitmore Holdings.

I stared at the photograph.

"Daniel, did Father ever tell you what Victoria discovered?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

I placed the photograph on the table.

"Then we're asking her.""

Daniel suddenly looked uncomfortable.

"Alexander, there's another document.""

He removed a sealed envelope from the bottom of the drawer.

It had been addressed to me.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Alexander, if you are reading this, I am sorry I didn't tell you sooner. The truth about Emily's accident is connected to a decision I made before she was born.

I stopped breathing for a moment.

There was no signature.

But I recognized the handwriting.

Victoria's.

I looked at Daniel.

"How did this get here?""

He shook his head.

"I found it in Father's archive yesterday.""

I read the final line.

Ask your wife what happened at the Whitmore residence three months before the accident.

My phone rang.

Victoria.

I answered immediately.

"Alexander?""

Her voice was shaking.

"Where are you?""

"At home. Emily is asleep.""

"Victoria, I found something.""

She went silent.

"I found the recording. I found the accident report. And I found your letter.""

A long pause followed.

Then she whispered:

"Please don't come home angry.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why would I be angry?""

May you like

Her answer broke something inside me.

"Because I lied to you about the day Emily was hurt.""
