Chapter 14: The Last Recording My Father Left Behind
We reached Westbridge Academy at 7:42 a.m.
Police vehicles were already parked outside the main entrance.
Marcus had contacted the authorities, and the school had been evacuated as a precaution.
I stepped out of the SUV.
The school building looked strangely peaceful.
The same windows.
The same front lawn.
The same entrance where Emily had proudly walked on her first day.
I remembered how she'd turned around and waved at me.
"Daddy, look! I'm a big girl now!""
I had smiled and waved back.
I never imagined that the place where she'd wanted to make friends would become the center of a criminal investigation.
A police detective approached.
"Mr. Cross?""
"Yes.""
"I'm Detective Reynolds. We received information about a possible attempt to destroy evidence inside the school.""
"Have you located Arthur?""
"Not yet.""
I looked toward the building.
"Where would someone hide a recording?""
The detective glanced at the school administrator.
"We're checking the principal's office and the old records room.""
I remembered the documents from Mrs. Bennett.
"There's a storage area beneath the library.""
The administrator looked surprised.
"How do you know about that?""
"My father helped finance the original building.""
He nodded.
"There's an old maintenance entrance. It hasn't been used in years.""
Marcus immediately contacted the security team.
We entered through the side corridor.
The school smelled of floor polish and freshly cleaned carpets.
I walked past the classrooms.
Emily's classroom was on the second floor.
Through the glass, I could see her little desk.
A pink pencil case sat on top.
Someone had left a drawing beside it.
A small picture of a girl with one prosthetic leg standing beside a rainbow.
I stopped.
"That's Emily's.""
Marcus looked at it.
"Would you like me to retrieve it?""
I nodded.
He carefully picked it up.
Then we continued downstairs.
The maintenance entrance was behind a locked door.
A police officer opened it.
The stairs descended into a narrow basement.
At the bottom stood a metal cabinet.
The administrator pointed toward it.
"Those are the old school records.""
I examined the labels.
Most were decades old.
Then I found a box marked:
*CROSS FOUNDATION — ORIGINAL DONATIONS.*
I opened it.
Inside were financial statements, photographs, and several audio cassettes.
But there was no digital recorder.
I looked at Marcus.
"Search the entire cabinet.""
He began examining the boxes.
A moment later, he found a small envelope taped beneath the lowest shelf.
My father's handwriting was on the front.
*FOR ALEXANDER.*
I opened it.
Inside was a small USB drive and a handwritten note.
My son, if you've found this, then the people I feared have finally moved against the family. Listen carefully. Do not assume the person closest to you is the guilty one.
I inserted the USB drive into a laptop provided by the police.
A video appeared.
My father was sitting in his library.
He looked tired.
His hands rested on the desk.
"Alexander," he began, "I wish I could explain all of this to you in person.""
I leaned closer.
"Richard Whitmore and Arthur Bennett have been stealing from the foundation for years. Daniel became involved after they threatened to expose a series of financial mistakes he made.""
The video paused.
Then my father continued.
"But Daniel is not the person who planned the accident.""
I froze.
Marcus looked at me.
The recording continued.
"Your brother approved the operation because he believed it would frighten Victoria. He did not understand that Grant Mercer had been instructed to cause a collision.""
My chest tightened.
"That instruction came from Arthur.""
The video showed my father opening a folder.
"Arthur wanted Victoria's evidence destroyed. He believed that if she were seriously injured, the investigation would end.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Then why did Lauren say Daniel ordered it?""
My father seemed to anticipate the question.
"Daniel's signature was used to authorize the operation. But the final instructions came from Arthur.""
I closed my eyes.
My brother was guilty.
But he hadn't been the mastermind.
My father continued.
"There is another truth. Victoria discovered that Arthur had manipulated several medical records during my final hospitalization. She brought the evidence to me.""
I looked toward Marcus.
"Keep recording.""
My father's voice became quieter.
"I was not dying from natural complications alone. Arthur arranged for medication to be administered in a way that accelerated my condition. I discovered it too late.""
The room went silent.
My father had been murdered.
The recording continued.
"I left the estate to Emily because I wanted her future protected from the men who believed money gave them ownership over other people's lives.""
He paused.
"And Victoria is the trustee because she was the only person who refused to sell her conscience.""
I felt tears sting my eyes.
My father looked directly into the camera.
"Alexander, do not destroy your brother. Make him tell the truth. And do not allow hatred to turn you into the people who hurt your family.""
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Detective Reynolds stepped closer.
"Mr. Cross, this recording changes everything.""
I nodded.
"Preserve it. Make certified copies. Send the original to the district attorney.""
A police officer suddenly rushed down the stairs.
"Detective! We have a situation upstairs!""
Reynolds turned.
"What?""
"Arthur Bennett has been located.""
"Where?""
"In the principal's office.""
We rushed upstairs.
Arthur was standing beside the principal's desk.
His silver hair was neatly combed. His expensive suit was perfectly pressed.
He looked almost offended when he saw us.
"Alexander.""
I stopped several feet away.
"Arthur.""
He glanced at the officers.
"This is unnecessary.""
Detective Reynolds stepped forward.
"Arthur Bennett, we need you to accompany us.""
Arthur laughed.
"On what grounds?""
I held up the USB drive.
"On the grounds that we know what happened to my father.""
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
He looked at the drive.
Then at me.
"Your father was a very sick man.""
"He was murdered.""
Arthur's smile disappeared.
"Be careful.""
"I heard the recording.""
He stared at me.
Then he slowly looked toward the school windows.
"Where is Victoria?""
"Safe.""
"And Emily?""
"Safe.""
Arthur nodded.
"Good. Then perhaps we can still reach an understanding.""
I shook my head.
"There's nothing left to discuss.""
He turned toward Detective Reynolds.
"Before you arrest me, ask Alexander why his father trusted Victoria with the inheritance instead of him.""
I stepped forward.
"Because she was honest.""
Arthur laughed.
"Is that what she told you?""
He leaned closer.
"Your wife didn't just discover the financial fraud, Alexander.""
I stared at him.
"What else?""
"She discovered that your father's second will contained a clause that could expose the real owner of the foundation.""
"What real owner?""
Arthur smiled faintly.
Then he reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
"Your father never owned the foundation outright.""
He placed it on the desk.
"Neither do you.""
I looked down.
The document named a private trust.
And beneath it was a name I had never expected to see.
*LAUREN BENNETT.*
Arthur whispered:
"Ask her why your father gave her the power to remove every one of us.""
Before I could respond, the detective took the document.
Arthur was placed in handcuffs.
But as the officers led him away, he turned toward me.
"You think this is over?""
I didn't answer.
He smiled.
"Then you haven't spoken to Richard yet.""
My phone rang.
Marcus.
"Sir, Richard Whitmore has been arrested.""
I exhaled.
"Good.""
Marcus paused.
"There's a problem.""
"What?""
"He's requested to speak with you personally.""
I looked toward the document.
"Why?""
May you like
Marcus lowered his voice.
"He says he knows who actually ordered your father's murder.""
