Chapter 12: The Signature That Could Destroy Me

I read the medical authorization four times.

My signature was unmistakable.

Three years earlier, my father had been admitted to the hospital after suffering a serious cardiac episode. The doctors explained that he needed several procedures and close medical supervision.

Arthur Bennett had approached me in the waiting room.

He'd placed a folder in my hands.

"Alexander, your father trusts you. We need your authorization so the doctors can proceed without delays.""

I remembered signing.

I remembered being exhausted.

I remembered calling Victoria afterward and telling her everything would be fine.

Now Daniel was telling me that the document had given Arthur control over my father's medical treatment.

I looked at the page again.

"Why was this authorization never included in the hospital records?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Because Arthur arranged for it to be filed through a private medical management company.""

"Which company?""

He pointed toward the bottom of the page.

*Northstar Medical Administration.*

I stared at him.

"Northstar was involved in Father's treatment?""

"Yes.""

I sat down.

The same organization connected to the accident.

The same organization that had watched Emily.

The same organization whose contractors had been paid to threaten our family.

I rubbed my forehead.

"How deep does this go?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I stood.

"Then we're going to find out.""

Before leaving the office, I photographed every document and sent copies to our independent legal team.

Marcus approached.

"Sir, we have another problem.""

I looked at him.

"What now?""

"Arthur Bennett has scheduled an emergency foundation board meeting for nine this morning.""

"On what grounds?""

"He claims you're attempting to misuse foundation assets and intimidate school administrators.""

I laughed without humor.

"Of course he does.""

Marcus continued.

"He has also requested an immediate vote to suspend your authority as chairman.""

I looked at the clock.

It was 3:14 a.m.

"How many board members support him?""

"According to the preliminary notice, six.""

"Out of?""

"Nine.""

I turned toward Daniel.

"Did you know about this?""

He nodded.

"Arthur has been preparing it for months.""

"Why?""

"Because he wants the foundation's assets transferred to his management group.""

I picked up the medical authorization.

"And the accusation against me?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"They'll claim you used your authority to approve unauthorized payments.""

I stared at him.

"They'll blame me for the money you stole.""

He lowered his eyes.

"Yes.""

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the Dallas skyline was beginning to brighten.

For years, I'd believed my father's legacy was safe because Daniel and I had protected it.

Instead, we'd allowed people to turn it into a weapon.

My phone rang.

Victoria.

"Alexander?""

"What's wrong?""

"Emily is awake.""

I softened immediately.

"Is she okay?""

"She's asking for you.""

"I'll be home soon.""

She hesitated.

"There's something she wants to show you.""

"What?""

"She says she remembers the man from the accident.""

I froze.

"What man?""

"The one she saw before the truck hit the car.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Prepare the vehicle.""

Twenty-five minutes later, I was sitting beside Emily's hospital bed.

She was awake, holding her stuffed rabbit.

Victoria sat on the other side.

"Hey, princess.""

Emily smiled weakly.

"Daddy.""

I kissed her forehead.

"How are you feeling?""

"Better.""

Victoria handed me a small drawing.

Emily had drawn a road, two cars, and a person standing beside a tree.

I studied it.

"What's this?""

Emily pointed.

"That's the man.""

My heart started beating faster.

"Which man, sweetheart?""

"The man who came to Mommy's car after the crash.""

Victoria leaned forward.

"Emily, you remember him?""

She nodded.

"I saw him through the window.""

I pointed gently at the drawing.

"What did he look like?""

Emily studied the paper.

"He had gray hair. And he wore a shiny watch.""

Victoria looked at me.

My mind immediately went to Arthur Bennett.

Emily continued.

"He said something to Mommy.""

"What did he say?""

She frowned, trying to remember.

"He said, 'You should have listened.''"

Victoria began crying.

I held Emily's hand.

"Did you see his face?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I showed her a photograph on my phone.

It was the picture of Arthur standing beside Richard and Daniel.

Emily stared at it.

Then she pointed.

"That's him.""

The room went silent.

Victoria covered her mouth.

I felt my chest tighten.

"You're sure, sweetheart?""

Emily nodded.

"That's the man.""

I kissed her hand.

"Thank you for telling me.""

Then I stepped into the hallway and called Marcus.

"Get Arthur Bennett's current location.""

"Already working on it, sir.""

"And contact the detective handling the accident investigation. Tell him we have a witness identification.""

"Understood.""

I returned to Emily's room.

She was looking at Victoria.

"Mommy?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Why did that man look angry?""

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"Because he made a very bad decision.""

Emily looked down.

"Was it because of my leg?""

Victoria immediately shook her head.

"No, baby. None of this was your fault.""

Emily nodded slowly.

Then she asked the question that nearly destroyed me.

"Will I ever be able to run again?""

I sat beside her.

"Yes.""

"But the doctor said my leg needs fixing.""

"We'll get you the best care in the country.""

Emily looked at me.

"Even if it's expensive?""

I smiled through the pain.

"Especially then.""

She reached for my hand.

"Can you promise something?""

"Anything.""

"When we go back to school, can you make sure Sophie comes too?""

I looked at Victoria.

Emily continued.

"She doesn't have many friends. And Tyler was mean to her, too.""

I squeezed her hand.

"I promise we'll make sure she's safe.""

At that moment, Marcus appeared in the doorway.

"Sir, we located Arthur Bennett.""

"Where?""

"At his private residence.""

"Good. Have the authorities secure the property.""

Marcus hesitated.

"There's something else.""

I stood.

"What?""

"Arthur has left Dallas.""

"When?""

"Approximately thirty minutes ago.""

"Where is he going?""

Marcus looked at his phone.

"His private aircraft filed a flight plan for Geneva.""

I frowned.

"Why Geneva?""

Marcus handed me a photograph taken from the airport surveillance cameras.

Arthur was walking toward his aircraft with a woman beside him.

I recognized her immediately.

It was the woman who had been managing the foundation's legal records for years.

Our family attorney.

Evelyn Shaw.

Marcus spoke quietly.

"Sir, we also found something in Arthur's office.""

"What?""

"A document naming the person who was supposed to assume control of the foundation after your suspension.""

I looked at the screen.

The name appeared beneath the proposed chairman's signature.

*RICHARD WHITMORE.*

But that wasn't the part that made my blood run cold.

Below Richard's name was a second line.

*SPECIAL BENEFICIARY — EMILY CROSS EDUCATION TRUST.*

I stared at it.

"What is this?""

Marcus shook his head.

"We don't know yet.""

Then he turned the page.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the document.

Once Alexander is removed, the child becomes the final obstacle.

I looked toward Emily's hospital room.

The little girl who had simply wanted to attend school, make friends, and learn to run again.

They hadn't just used her to threaten me.

They had written her into a plan.

And whatever that plan was, it wasn't finished.

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke calmly.

"Mr. Cross, this is Evelyn Shaw.""

I tightened my grip.

"Where is Arthur?""

"That's not important anymore.""

"Then what is?""

She paused.

"Your father left a second will.""

I stared at the hospital wall.

"What second will?""

Her next words changed everything.

"One that names Emily as the sole beneficiary of the Cross family estate—and identifies the person responsible if anything happens to her.""

I swallowed.

"Who?""

May you like

Evelyn whispered:

"Alexander, the person named in that will is your wife.""
