Chapter 7: My Father's Other Son
“Biological son.””
I read the words again.
Then again.
They didn't change.
Arthur stood beside me on the sidewalk outside my father's first office, rain striking the SUV roof behind us.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I didn't know.””
“You knew about Eleanor.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Dad married her.””
“Yes.””
“And somehow you didn't know they had a child?””
Arthur's face tightened.
“Your father never told me Richard was his son.””
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I looked at Daniel.
“Get Vanessa on the phone.””
“She isn't answering.””
“Then find her.””
“We're trying.””
My phone buzzed.
A video file.
Vanessa.
I pressed play.
She was sitting somewhere dark.
“Claire, Richard isn't trying to steal something that was never his.””
My stomach tightened.
“He believes your father stole it from him.””
Vanessa glanced behind her.
“My grandmother Eleanor got pregnant near the end of her marriage. Your father accused her of cheating. They divorced before Richard was born.””
Arthur whispered, “Jesus.””
Vanessa continued.
“Years later, your father discovered Richard was his biological son.””
The video jumped slightly.
“Richard says your father promised to acknowledge him publicly, then changed his mind when your mother became pregnant with you.””
“No.””
“He says everything was transferred into trusts designed to keep him out.””
The video ended.
Arthur shook his head.
“That isn't consistent with the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The original Whitmore operating trust.””
“Show me.””
We returned to the SUV.
Arthur opened his laptop and searched old scans.
“This.””
He pointed to a clause.
“Your grandfather established the core trust before you were born. Direct descendants could receive beneficial interests only if formally acknowledged.””
“So Richard could have been included.””
“If your father acknowledged him.””
“But he didn't.””
“Not publicly.””
I thought about Section Fourteen.
“He did privately.””
Arthur nodded.
“And that's why Richard needs it.””
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened, then looked at me.
“We found Vanessa.””
“Where?””
“She walked into a police station.””
Relief hit me.
“She says she has evidence and wants protection.””
“Take me there.””
Arthur objected.
“You're going back to the hospital.””
“After.””
“Claire—”
“After.””
Forty minutes later, Vanessa sat across from me in an interview room.
She looked nothing like the woman who had stood in my silk robe.
No makeup.
Hair tied back.
Borrowed sweatshirt.
Her hands trembled around a paper cup.
“I didn't know you had just had surgery,” she said.
“You saw the baby.””
“I mean before you came home.””
I said nothing.
She looked down.
“Marcus told me Lily was staying at the hospital.””
“And me?””
“He said you weren't coming back.””
“Because?””
“He said you had agreed to a divorce.””
I leaned forward.
“You still slept with my husband.””
“Yes.””
At least she didn't hide from it.
“Why did Richard send you?””
Her eyes filled.
“My mother died last year. Before she died, she told me who my grandfather was.””
“Richard.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He approached me after the funeral. He had proof.””
“So Richard does have a daughter.””
“My mother.””
Arthur leaned forward.
“Richard's daughter was never registered in the Whitmore genealogy.””
“He said your family erased her too.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He spent my whole life telling my mother the Whitmores stole our future.””
I swallowed.
“What did he want from Marcus?””
“Access to the trust.””
“And Marcus agreed?””
“At first, Marcus thought Richard was helping him protect the company from you.””
I almost laughed.
“Protect it from the woman who owns it.””
“He didn't know.””
“He didn't want to know.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Then Richard showed him the succession clause.””
My fingers tightened around the table.
“And Marcus realized he could inherit control if I died without an heir.””
“Yes.””
“What about Lily?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“That's when everything changed.””
Arthur went still.
“Explain.””
“Richard said if Lily's legal registration could be delayed, Marcus could file an emergency petition claiming the succession conditions were unresolved.””
“That's nonsense,” Arthur said.
“I know.””
“Any competent judge would reject it.””
“Richard knew that too.””
I stared at her.
“Then why do it?””
“Because they didn't need to win.””
Arthur understood before I did.
“They needed temporary control.””
Vanessa nodded.
“A seventy-two-hour emergency order.””
My stomach dropped.
Seventy-two hours controlling corporate accounts.
Seventy-two hours accessing assets.
Seventy-two hours to move money.
“How much?””
Vanessa whispered, “Almost nine hundred million.””
Even Arthur looked stunned.
“What?””
“Richard has buyers waiting for three subsidiaries.””
“That would destroy the trust.””
“He doesn't care.””
I thought of my father.
Richard didn't want his inheritance.
He wanted revenge.
“Where is Marcus?””
“I don't know.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I swear.””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“He's scared of Richard now.””
“Why?””
“Because Marcus discovered something in the real amendment.””
She reached into her sweatshirt.
Daniel immediately moved.
Vanessa froze.
“It's just paper.””
She slowly removed a folded photocopy.
Arthur took it.
His eyes raced across the page.
Then stopped.
“What?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Where did you get this?””
“Richard's bag.””
Arthur handed it to me.
Section Fourteen contained another paragraph beneath the acknowledgment of Richard's paternity.
My father's language was unmistakable.
I recognize Richard Cole as my biological son. However, due to documented financial misconduct and attempted misappropriation of Whitmore assets, Richard shall possess no controlling authority over any Whitmore trust.
I looked up.
“He was acknowledged.””
Arthur nodded.
“And specifically barred.””
Vanessa leaned toward me.
“That's why he needs the original destroyed.””
“Then why take it?””
“He didn't.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“The document Richard showed Marcus was a copy.””
“Where's the original?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Your father gave it to the one person Richard could never force to surrender it.””
I waited.
“Who?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Your mother.””
I stared at her.
“My mother is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then where is it?””
May you like
Vanessa whispered the answer.
“Inside her grave.””
