Chapter 14: Beneath the White Roses

By sunrise, I was back at the house Marcus had ordered me to leave.

But this time, he wasn't with me.

The suitcases were still beside the stairs.

My father's ashes were safe with Daniel.

Vanessa's wineglass remained on the table.

The silk robe was gone.

It felt like walking through the remains of somebody else's marriage.

Arthur stayed outside.

I had asked him to.

I needed one hour without men explaining my family's secrets to me.

Lily slept against my chest in a carrier while I walked into the garden.

The white roses were still there.

My mother had planted them when I was twelve.

Dad hated gardening.

Mom loved it.

Every spring, they argued about fertilizer.

Every summer, he pretended not to care when the first flowers opened.

I knelt beside the oldest rosebush.

Pain shot through my abdomen.

“Bad idea,” I whispered.

Lily made a tiny sound.

“Yeah. Mommy knows.””

Daniel had insisted on giving me a small garden trowel.

I dug carefully.

Six inches down, metal scraped against metal.

My heart stopped.

I cleared the soil.

A small steel box.

No dramatic treasure chest.

No gold.

Just a weatherproof document container.

The key from the cemetery opened it.

Inside was a deed.

And a letter.

I read the deed first.

It covered thousands of acres of undeveloped land across three states.

My name appeared as sole owner.

Not the trust.

Not the corporation.

Me.

Arthur hadn't known.

Marcus couldn't touch it.

Richard had no claim.

I unfolded Dad's letter.

Claire,

You will inherit more money than anyone needs.

But this land is different.

Your mother and I bought it quietly because someday Whitmore may collapse.

Companies fail.

Markets turn.

Families fight.

If that happens, this land gives you a beginning nobody can vote away from you.

Tears slid down my face.

Dad hadn't left me another empire.

He had left me an escape from one.

The back door opened.

I turned.

Vanessa stood there.

Daniel appeared behind her.

“She's cleared to speak with you.””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“I came for my things.””

I almost laughed.

“Your things?””

She winced.

“Bad choice of words.””

She had changed into jeans and a borrowed jacket.

No silk robe.

No wineglass.

No smug smile.

“I owe you an apology.””

“Yes.””

She blinked.

Apparently she'd expected me to make it easier.

I didn't.

“I slept with your husband.””

“Yes.””

“I believed his lies.””

“You also ignored things you didn't want to question.””

Her eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

I appreciated that answer more.

She looked at Lily.

“I never wanted her hurt.””

“But you helped people who were willing to use her.””

“I know.””

Silence settled between us.

Finally, Vanessa said, “I'm cooperating with investigators.””

“Good.””

“They offered me protection in exchange for testimony.””

“Take it.””

She nodded.

Then she reached into her pocket.

“I found this in Marcus's jacket.””

A flash drive.

“Another one?””

“This isn't Richard's.””

She handed it to me.

“It belongs to Marcus.””

“What is on it?””

“Audio recordings.””

My stomach tightened.

“Of whom?””

“You and Arthur.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Marcus had been recording conversations in this house for almost a year.””

That hurt in an entirely different way.

“Why?””

“He suspected you were hiding assets.””

Of course.

Even before Richard, Marcus had been preparing for war against me.

“There's one recording you need to hear.””

Vanessa opened a file on her phone.

Marcus's voice filled the garden.

“When the baby comes, Claire will be vulnerable.””

Then another man's voice.

Thomas.

My skin went cold.

“She trusts you?””

“She loves me.””

“And after delivery?””

“I'll get her signature.””

My knees nearly failed.

The recording continued.

Thomas asked, “What if she reads the documents?””

Marcus laughed.

“She won't. She'll be exhausted.””

I stopped the recording.

“That was before Lily was born?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Three weeks before.””

Everything Marcus had said about Richard manipulating him suddenly changed.

Richard had manipulated him.

But Marcus had already been looking for a way to take control.

Before the affair.

Before the hospital.

Before Lily's paperwork disappeared.

He had planned to use my childbirth against me.

Daniel's expression hardened.

“This needs to go to investigators.””

I handed him the drive.

“Take it.””

Vanessa turned to leave.

“Wait.””

She stopped.

“Why did you help me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because my mother spent her whole life angry about what our family didn't have.””

She looked toward the mansion.

“I thought getting inside this house would make me feel like we'd won.””

“Did it?””

“No.””

She laughed sadly.

“I wore your robe and drank your wine and realized I was still somebody hiding in another woman's life.””

Then she walked away.

I looked down at Lily.

“We're done hiding too.””

My phone rang.

Arthur.

I answered.

“Claire, turn on the television.””

“Why?””

“Marcus has done something.””

I went inside.

Daniel switched on the news.

Marcus stood outside the county courthouse surrounded by reporters.

His lawyer was beside him.

Marcus looked directly into the cameras.

“My wife has manipulated the Whitmore trust for years.””

I froze.

He continued.

“She concealed ownership, concealed family relationships, and exploited my position as CEO.””

Daniel muttered, “Unbelievable.””

Then Marcus delivered the real blow.

“I am filing for emergency custody of our daughter.””

My blood turned cold.

A reporter shouted, “On what grounds?””

Marcus looked straight into the camera.

“Claire Whitmore is medically unstable, financially compromised, and surrounded by people currently under criminal investigation.””

He paused.

“I believe my daughter is in danger.””

I stared at the screen.

Three days after throwing Lily and me out of “his” mansion, Marcus had found a new way to try taking her from me.

Then Arthur's voice came through my phone.

“Claire, there's more.””

“What?””

“The judge granted him a hearing.””

“When?””

Arthur went silent.

May you like

“Arthur.””

“Today.””
