Chapter 4: The Clause He Needed
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
“Marcus?””
Arthur's answer came through my phone.
“Yes.””
I stared at Lily.
Her tiny fist was curled beneath her chin.
Three days old.
Three days old, and somehow she had already changed the legal structure of an empire she couldn't even see.
“Explain it.””
Arthur exhaled slowly.
“Your father was terrified something might happen to you before you had children. At the time, Marcus was your husband. Your father didn't trust him completely, but he believed you did.””
My throat tightened.
“So Dad gave him control?””
“Temporary control. Only if you died without a legal heir.””
I looked toward the open safe.
“And Lily?””
“Lily changes everything.””
“How?””
“The succession clause became obsolete the moment she was born alive.””
I closed my eyes.
Relief came first.
Then something darker.
“If Marcus knew about the amendment…”
Daniel finished the thought.
“He had a reason to care whether that birth was legally recorded.””
The paramedic beside me stiffened.
I looked at Arthur.
“Was it?””
“I'm checking.””
Those words frightened me more than anything Marcus had said.
“You're checking?””
“Claire, Lily was delivered during an emergency procedure. The hospital initiates birth registration, but the certified record may not have been processed yet.””
My stomach turned.
Marcus had been at the hospital.
He knew Lily survived.
But Richard Cole cared about documents.
Signatures.
Timing.
“Call the hospital,” I said.
“I already am.””
The paramedic stepped closer.
“We need to get you back there now.””
This time, I agreed.
Daniel carried Dad's ashes while another officer brought Lily's diaper bag from my car.
As we crossed the foyer, I saw my suitcases again.
My entire marriage reduced to luggage.
I stopped.
One suitcase was slightly open.
Something white protruded from the zipper.
“Wait.””
Daniel turned.
I crouched before he could stop me.
Pain burned through my incision.
I pulled the paper free.
It wasn't mine.
It was a hotel receipt.
The name printed at the top was Marcus Hale.
Two nights earlier.
The night after Lily was born.
Vanessa leaned over my shoulder.
Her face changed.
“That wasn't me.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“I wasn't at that hotel.””
Marcus had another secret.
Maybe another woman.
But the receipt wasn't what bothered me.
A handwritten number appeared on the bottom.
11-47-3.
Arthur went silent when I read it aloud.
“Arthur?””
“That format resembles an internal trust archive reference.””
Daniel took the receipt.
“Which file?””
“I'll have to check.””
Vanessa whispered, “Richard wrote numbers like that.””
I turned toward her.
“You've seen his handwriting?””
“He left notes for Marcus.””
“How long have you known Richard?””
She hesitated.
“Two months.””
My anger sharpened.
“You said Marcus brought him here last night.””
“He did.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Vanessa looked toward the floor.
“I met Richard before I met Marcus.””
Everything inside me went still.
Daniel shut the front door.
Nobody was leaving now.
“How?””
“He hired me.””
Marcus's mistress had just become something else entirely.
“To do what?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with panic.
“He said Marcus needed an executive assistant for private matters. He introduced us at a charity event. Marcus liked me.””
“And you slept with him.””
Her face hardened.
“Yes.””
“At Richard's instruction?””
“No.””
I studied her.
She looked ashamed.
But not innocent.
“What did Richard want?””
“He wanted access.””
“To Marcus?””
“To you.””
The room felt suddenly colder.
Vanessa continued.
“He thought Marcus could get you to sign documents without reading them.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
That was almost funny.
Marcus was the one who never read anything.
“What documents?””
“I don't know. Richard never showed me everything.””
“Then why are you telling me now?””
Her eyes shifted toward the driveway.
“Because Marcus wasn't supposed to throw you out.””
I frowned.
“What was he supposed to do?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Keep you here.””
My skin prickled.
“Why?””
“So Richard could come back tonight.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What time?””
“Midnight.””
Arthur's voice snapped through the phone.
“Claire, leave immediately.””
Daniel nodded.
“We're going.””
The paramedic helped me toward the door.
Vanessa followed.
Daniel stopped her.
“You stay.””
Her face went white.
“No. Please.””
“You may be involved in an attempted fraud.””
“If I stay, Marcus will come back.””
“He's been removed.””
“You don't understand.””
She grabbed my arm.
I winced.
Daniel pulled her away.
Vanessa started crying.
“Richard doesn't care about Marcus. Marcus thinks they're partners, but Richard is using him.””
“For what?”” I demanded.
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“To make the old succession clause active again.””
The meaning landed slowly.
Then violently.
Arthur spoke first.
“Daniel, hospital. Now.””
I held Lily tighter.
Outside, one of the SUVs started.
As Daniel opened the door, my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Marcus standing beside Richard Cole in what looked like a hospital records office.
The timestamp was from that morning.
Beneath the photograph were seven words.
YOUR DAUGHTER DOES NOT EXIST ON PAPER.
I stopped breathing.
May you like
Then another message arrived.
MIDNIGHT. COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THAT TO CHANGE.
