Chapter 9: The Hidden Chapter Of My Past

Ethan looked at me while listening to the call.

I couldn’t hear the person on the other end.

But I could see the confusion spreading across his face.

Then his expression turned serious.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“Wait… how do you know him?””

My stomach tightened.

Because whoever was calling knew me.

Not the man Ethan knew.

The man I was before.

After a few more seconds, Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

“Her name is Olivia.””

I frowned.

“Olivia who?””

He stared at me.

“She said she knew you before Mom.””

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

Claire looked at me.

I saw the question in her eyes.

But I had no answer.

Because I knew many people before my life with Claire.

But Olivia was a name I hadn’t heard in years.

“Did she say why she called?”” I asked.

Ethan nodded.

“She said there’s something about my childhood you never told me.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

Not because I was hiding something terrible.

Because I knew how dangerous half-truths could be.

I had spent years trying to protect Ethan.

But secrets had a way of finding their way back.

“Did she give you an address?””

Ethan hesitated.

“Yes.””

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped closer.

“Ethan, enough people have pulled you into adult problems.””

But Ethan looked at her calmly.

“No.””

The firmness in his voice surprised everyone.

“I’m tired of people deciding what I can handle.””

Nobody argued.

Because he was right.

He turned toward me.

“I need to know.””

I looked at him.

The boy who once told me I would never be his father.

Now asking me to trust him with the truth.

So I nodded.

“Okay.””

The address led us to a small office downtown.

The woman waiting inside looked nervous.

When she saw Ethan, she immediately stood.

“You came.””

Ethan didn’t sit.

“Who are you?””

The woman took a breath.

“My name is Olivia Bennett.””

She looked at me.

“And I knew David before he met your mother.””

I stayed silent.

Ethan noticed.

“You know her.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

I looked at Olivia.

“Why are you here?””

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“Because I should have told him years ago.””

“Told him what?””

She reached into a drawer.

She pulled out an old file.

Then placed it on the table.

“This is about the night your father left.””

Ethan looked at the file.

My heart sank.

Because I knew that file.

I hadn’t seen it in twelve years.

Olivia pushed it toward Ethan.

“Your father didn’t leave because he didn’t love you.””

Ethan opened it.

“And David didn’t just step in by accident.””

I looked at her.

“Olivia.””

She shook her head.

“No more secrets.””

Ethan looked confused.

“What are you saying?””

Olivia pointed at the papers.

“Your stepfather was the reason you stayed safe.””

Ethan looked at me.

“But there’s something else.””

A long silence followed.

Then Olivia said the words I had spent years hoping Ethan would never hear.

“The night your father disappeared…”

She paused.

“He didn’t leave you.””

Ethan froze.

“He was forced to.””

And then she placed one final document on the table.

A document with a name written across the top.

A name that changed everything.

Because it belonged to the person who had caused the separation of Ethan’s family.

And Ethan knew that name.

It was someone he trusted.
