Chapter 3: The Truth Behind The Picture

Ethan didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did I.

The photo on his phone had changed the entire atmosphere inside our home.

For twelve years, Ethan believed there was one story.

A story where Marcus was the father who was taken away from him.

A story where I was the man who stepped in but could never truly belong.

But now there was another piece missing.

And I knew exactly what it was.

The next morning, Ethan found me sitting at the kitchen table.

The same place where he had told me I would never be his father.

But this time, he didn’t walk past me.

He stopped.

“Who is that man in the picture?””

I looked at him.

“Marcus.””

“I know that.””

His voice wasn’t angry anymore.

It was desperate.

“I mean why were you with him?””

I looked at the photo again.

A younger version of myself stood beside Marcus outside a hospital.

Both of us looked exhausted.

Both of us looked worried.

Because that picture was taken during one of the hardest days of Ethan’s childhood.

The day he almost lost his mother.

“Your father asked me to meet him.””

Ethan frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he knew he wasn’t ready.””

The answer confused him.

“He admitted that?””

“Yes.””

Ethan pulled out the chair across from me.

“Tell me everything.””

So I did.

I told him about the conversation I had with Marcus years ago.

The conversation Ethan never knew happened.

Marcus had come to my house late one night.

He looked different from the confident man Ethan imagined.

He looked broken.

Scared.

“I remember him standing right there,” I said, pointing toward the front door.

“He told me he didn’t know how to be a father.””

Ethan stared at me.

“What did you say?””

“I told him he needed to try.””

“And?””

I looked down.

“He said he wasn’t sure he could.””

Ethan’s face fell.

“He said that?””

“Yes.””

The silence was painful.

Because sometimes the truth hurts more than a lie.

“But then why did he send that message?”” Ethan asked.

I didn’t know.

And that scared me.

Because Marcus returning after all these years was not random.

There had to be a reason.

A few hours later, Ethan agreed to meet him.

Not because he trusted him.

Because he needed answers.

We met at a small coffee shop across town.

Marcus arrived twenty minutes late.

Ethan noticed.

I noticed too.

But I said nothing.

Marcus looked at Ethan with a smile.

“Wow.””

He shook his head.

“You look just like me.””

Ethan didn’t smile.

“You said you wanted to tell me the truth.””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

His eyes moved toward me.

“You brought him?””

Ethan immediately answered.

“Yes.””

Marcus sighed.

“I guess he always had to be involved.””

That sentence bothered Ethan.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Because he changed everything.””

I watched Ethan carefully.

Because I knew this was the moment where he would finally see the difference between words and actions.

Marcus leaned forward.

“Son, your mother kept you away from me.””

Claire wasn’t there.

She couldn’t defend herself.

And I knew that was why he chose those words.

Ethan looked at him.

“Is that true?””

Marcus nodded.

“She made it impossible.””

I almost spoke.

But I stopped.

Because Ethan needed to make his own judgment.

Then Marcus reached into his jacket.

He pulled out another envelope.

“I wrote this years ago.””

Ethan stared at it.

“What is it?””

Marcus pushed it across the table.

“The reason I disappeared.””

Ethan opened the envelope.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then slowly...

His expression changed.

Because whatever was written inside that letter was not what he expected.

He looked up at Marcus.

Then at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Why didn’t you tell me you saved his life?””
