Chapter 8: The Choice I Never Told Him About

I stared at the document.

My name was there.

My signature.

A decision I had made years ago.

A decision Ethan never knew existed.

Rachel watched my face carefully.

“You didn’t tell him.””

I folded the paper.

“No.””

Ethan noticed immediately.

“What is that?””

I looked at him.

For a second, I wanted to put it away.

I wanted to protect him again.

But I remembered what he said.

Everyone keeps making decisions for me.

So this time, I told the truth.

“Something your father asked me to do.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Asked you?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

I handed him the document.

He read the first few lines.

Then looked up.

“Guardianship papers?””

The hallway went silent.

Ethan looked at me.

“You were going to become my legal guardian?””

I nodded.

“Only if something happened to your father.””

His eyes moved across the page.

“But you never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

I took a breath.

“Because I never wanted you to think I was trying to take his place.””

Ethan looked hurt.

“But you were willing to.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because loving someone doesn’t mean you need credit for it.””

The words seemed to affect him.

He looked back at the papers.

“Did my dad ask you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

I sat down.

“After his accident.””

Ethan stared.

“After you saved him?””

“Yes.””

The memory came back.

Marcus had been lying in that hospital bed, scared and broken.

He had grabbed my hand.

“David,” he had said, “if something happens to me, don’t let Ethan feel abandoned again.””

At the time, I thought it was impossible.

I was just his stepfather.

But Marcus knew something I didn’t.

That Ethan needed someone who would stay.

“I told him I would protect you,” I said.

Ethan looked away.

“And I spent years thinking you were just the guy who married my mom.””

That sentence hurt.

But this time, it didn’t break me.

Because Ethan was finally seeing the whole picture.

A nurse walked toward us.

“Marcus is stable.””

Everyone released a breath.

Ethan immediately stood.

“Can I see him?””

The nurse nodded.

When Ethan went back inside, I stayed in the hallway.

Claire came beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For letting him believe you didn’t matter.””

I didn’t answer.

Because there were no easy words.

Claire looked through the window.

“He loves you.””

I smiled slightly.

“I know.””

“He just didn’t know how to say it.””

“I know that too.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I was wrong.””

That surprised me.

Claire had always been strong.

Always convinced she knew what was best.

“I thought if Ethan loved Marcus, he would lose us.””

I looked at her.

“And?””

She looked down.

“I was so focused on protecting him from losing one parent that I made him feel like he had lost both.””

Before I could answer, Ethan came back out.

His face was different.

Calmer.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“He apologized.””

I nodded.

“And?””

Ethan looked down.

“He said he doesn’t expect me to forgive him.””

That was the kind of answer Marcus needed to give.

Not excuses.

Not demands.

Just honesty.

Then Ethan took a deep breath.

“I told him something.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“I told him I’m angry.””

I nodded.

“That’s fair.””

“But…”

He paused.

“I also told him I don’t want to spend my whole life being angry.””

For the first time in months, I saw the boy I remembered.

The kind one.

The thoughtful one.

The one who cared.

Then Ethan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out the old photo from Marcus.

The one of me and him together.

“I have a question.””

“What?””

He looked at the picture.

“Why did you forgive him?””

I looked at Marcus through the hospital window.

And answered:

“Because forgiveness wasn’t for him.””

Ethan waited.

“It was for me.””

He nodded slowly.

But before he could respond, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Because the caller wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t his mother.

It wasn’t anyone from the hospital.

It was a number he didn’t recognize.

And when he answered, the voice on the other end said something that changed everything.

“Ethan, you need to know what David never told you about your childhood.””
