Chapter 14: The Family I Chose
The accusation was impossible.
Yet somehow, after everything I had learned, nothing felt impossible anymore.
“Me?””
Daniel nodded.
“They’re claiming you had a motive.””
I stared at him.
“My own father?””
“They say you wanted control of the inheritance.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was absurd.
The person who spent his entire life avoiding money was suddenly being accused of killing for it.
“Who filed the evidence?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“Who?””
“Nia.””
My chest tightened.
Of course.
The woman who started the entire nightmare.
But something felt wrong.
Too convenient.
“She blamed me?””
“She provided documents.””
“Fake ones?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then my mother.
Everyone was watching me.
Waiting for me to break.
I didn’t.
Not this time.
“Where is she?””
Daniel looked surprised.
“You’re going after her?””
“No.””
I picked up my phone.
“I’m going to ask her why.””
I found Nia at the hotel.
The same place where everything started.
She opened the door slowly.
When she saw me, her eyes filled with tears.
“Marcus.””
I held up the evidence report.
“You tried to frame me.””
Her face changed.
“No.””
“Don’t lie.””
She stepped back.
“I didn’t know.””
“You gave them documents.””
“Yes.””
“You knew they would use them against me.””
She shook her head.
“I thought I was helping.””
I almost walked away.
Then she said something that stopped me.
“Richard threatened my family.””
I turned.
“What?””
She cried.
“He has my father’s old records. He can destroy everything.””
“You chose him over me.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I chose survival.””
I stared at her.
“You keep saying that.””
“I know.””
She wiped her face.
“I was wrong.””
For once, I believed she meant it.
But forgiveness wasn’t the same as trust.
“Why did you really marry me?””
She looked down.
“At first?””
The honesty surprised me.
“Yes.””
“At first, because of the trust.””
The words hurt.
“But later?””
She looked at me.
“Later because I fell in love with you.””
I said nothing.
Because that was the most painful possibility.
Maybe some of it was real.
Maybe someone could love you and still destroy you.
“Marcus.””
I turned away.
“I need one thing.””
“What?””
“Help me stop Richard.””
She looked shocked.
“Why?””
“Because you know him.””
She nodded slowly.
“And because if I don’t stop him, nobody else will.””
That night, the four people left standing on my side were the ones I never expected.
My mother.
My brother.
Daniel.
And even Nia.
The people who hurt me.
The people who helped me.
The people who had pieces of the truth.
Together, we rebuilt the timeline.
Richard had planned everything.
But he had made one mistake.
He underestimated how much evidence my father left behind.
Daniel recovered hidden files.
Ethan found company records.
My mother gave her testimony.
And Nia provided the final piece.
A recording Richard made while threatening her.
His own voice.
His own confession.
The police arrested him two days later.
But before they took him away, he asked to see me.
I almost refused.
Then I agreed.
He sat across from me in the interrogation room.
Older.
Smaller.
Not the monster I imagined.
Just a man who destroyed everyone around him because he wanted more.
“You look like your father,” he said.
I stared.
“You killed him.””
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone’s favorite excuse.
“You ruined your own family.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“And for what?””
He looked at me.
“Money.””
I stood.
“That’s all?””
Richard looked away.
“No.””
I stopped.
“What?””
He whispered:
“I was jealous.””
“Of what?””
“Your father.””
I frowned.
“He had everything.””
Richard smiled sadly.
“Not money.””
“Then what?””
He looked at me.
“People who loved him.””
The words stayed with me.
Because maybe that was the truth.
The thing everyone had been chasing.
The thing money could never buy.
A family.
A real one.
And for the first time in months, I understood something.
May you like
I hadn’t lost my family.
I had finally found it.
