Chapter 13: The Last Lie My Father Left Behind

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

I stared at it on the wooden table.

Daniel.

My father’s trusted attorney.

The man who claimed he wanted justice.

The man who guided me toward the truth.

The man who had been standing beside me while I discovered every betrayal.

And now he was standing in a photograph beside my father’s medication.

“What is this?””

My voice barely sounded like mine.

My mother looked exhausted.

“I found it after your father died.””

“And you kept it?””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“Why does everyone in my life collect secrets like they’re saving them for a rainy day?””

No one answered.

Because there was no defense.

Not anymore.

I grabbed my phone and called Daniel.

He answered quickly.

“Marcus?””

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Why?””

“Just answer.””

Another pause.

“At the office.””

“Stay there.””

I ended the call.

Ethan looked at me.

“You think he did it?””

I looked at the photograph.

“I think I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

That was the hardest part.

Not the money.

Not the inheritance.

Not even the lies.

It was realizing that every person I loved had a version of the truth they kept hidden from me.

I drove to Daniel’s office with Ethan beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

When we arrived, Daniel was waiting.

He looked at my face.

Then he saw the photograph in my hand.

Everything changed.

He knew.

“You found it.””

I stopped.

“You knew about this?””

Daniel sighed.

“Yes.””

My anger exploded.

“You knew?””

“I knew Richard was involved.””

“And you knew about yourself?””

His expression hardened.

“I knew you would eventually find out.””

“Answer me.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“I was there the night your father died.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stepped forward.

“What?””

Daniel sat down.

Slowly.

Like he had been carrying this moment for years.

“Your father called me.””

“Why?””

“He knew Richard was dangerous.””

“And you went there?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Daniel looked down.

“Your father confronted Richard.””

I listened.

“He told Richard he was changing everything. The trust. The company. The inheritance.””

“And Richard poisoned him.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why are you in the photograph?””

His face tightened.

“Because I tried to stop him.””

I laughed.

A bitter, empty sound.

“Try harder.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I did.””

“Then explain.””

He took a deep breath.

“Richard had already switched the medication. Your father knew he was dying, but he didn’t know Richard had changed the prescription.””

I stared.

“Then why did you touch it?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

The words hit me.

“You thought?””

He nodded.

“I switched the medication back.””

I froze.

“Then Dad should have lived.””

“Yes.””

“Unless…”

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“Unless someone changed it again.””

Nobody moved.

The answer was obvious.

There had been three people involved.

Richard.

Daniel.

And someone else.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Who changed it again?””

He whispered:

“Your mother.””

My heart sank.

I turned toward him.

“She admitted she switched the pills.””

Daniel nodded.

“But she switched them before I arrived.””

“What?””

He continued.

“Your mother thought she was protecting your father from Richard’s poison.””

I felt confused.

“Then what killed him?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“The final switch.””

“Who?””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Vanessa.””

The room went still.

Ethan stepped back.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She found out your father planned to split the inheritance between both sons.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

I looked at Ethan.

His face was destroyed.

“My mother killed him?””

Daniel shook his head.

“She didn’t intend for him to die.””

“Everyone says that.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because it’s the truth.””

I hated that phrase.

Everyone used it.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had regret.

But my father was still dead.

“So who is responsible?””

Daniel reached into his desk drawer.

He pulled out a small recorder.

“Your father knew this might happen.””

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my father’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“If you are hearing this, then my family has been destroyed by the secrets I created.””

My breathing stopped.

“My son Marcus needs to know something.””

A pause.

“The person responsible for my death is not one person.””

I looked at Ethan.

My father continued.

“It is the result of every person choosing fear over honesty.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because my father’s final message wasn’t an accusation.

It was a warning.

And then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face turned pale.

“What happened?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Richard escaped custody.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

Daniel whispered:

“He wasn’t arrested.””

A pause.

“He was released this morning.””

“Why?””

May you like

Daniel looked terrified.

“Because someone provided evidence that you were responsible for your father’s death.””
