Chapter 11: The Brother Who Saved Me

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

The silence felt heavier than any argument.

Because now the truth was clear.

Someone wanted me dead.

Not embarrassed.

Not ruined.

Dead.

I looked at Daniel.

“Where is Richard?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re his attorney.””

“I stopped representing him years ago.””

“But you know how he thinks.””

Daniel looked toward the lake.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me where he would go.””

Before Daniel could answer, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Ethan.

*Marcus, we need to talk. It’s about Richard.*

I stared at the screen.

My hidden brother.

The person I spent my entire life not knowing existed.

And somehow, he might be the person who could help me.

I called him.

He answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Somewhere safe.””

I almost laughed.

Nobody in my life seemed to know what safe meant anymore.

“Did you know about Richard?””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised me.

“How?””

“My mother told me.””

I looked at Vanessa’s house in my memory.

“Your mother knew?””

“Yes.””

“Everyone knew except me.””

Ethan was quiet.

Then he said:

“Not everyone.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your father tried to tell you.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What?””

Ethan continued.

“He left something for both of us.””

My heart stopped.

“Both of us?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“The place where he kept his most important things.””

I knew immediately.

The old office.

My father’s private office at his company.

A place nobody had entered since his death.

“Meet me there.””

An hour later, I stood outside the building where my father spent most of his life.

Ethan was already waiting.

Seeing him in person was strange.

Like looking into a mirror that belonged to someone else.

He noticed.

“I know.””

I looked away.

“Know what?””

“That I look like him.””

I didn’t answer.

Because he did.

More than I wanted to admit.

Inside the office, Ethan opened an old cabinet.

Behind a row of files was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small box.

My father’s handwriting was on it.

*For Marcus and Ethan.*

My chest tightened.

We opened it together.

Inside were two letters.

One for each of us.

I opened mine.

My father’s words appeared.

*My sons, if you are reading this, then the people I trusted failed me.*

I swallowed.

The letter explained everything.

Richard had been stealing from the company for years.

When my father discovered it, Richard threatened to expose his marriage to Vanessa.

But my father refused to surrender.

He changed the trust.

He included Ethan.

And then Richard attacked him.

But there was something else.

A final paragraph.

*The person who helps Richard is someone close to Marcus. Someone who has access to his life and knows his weaknesses.*

I looked at Ethan.

“Nia.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked down.

“Because she came to me first.””

My stomach tightened.

“She came to you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before you met her.””

The room spun.

“What did she want?””

Ethan looked ashamed.

“Information.””

“About me?””

“About your father.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything had been planned before I even knew her name.

Then Ethan said something I never expected.

“She also saved me.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“From Richard.””

I stared.

“She betrayed me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why defend her?””

“Because she was trapped.””

I shook my head.

“She had choices.””

“So did my father.””

That stopped me.

Ethan looked at me.

“Everyone in this story made mistakes.””

He touched the letter.

“But some people are trying to fix them.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a voice.

Richard.

“Marcus.””

My blood turned cold.

“How did you get this number?””

A laugh.

“I’ve had it for years.””

“What do you want?””

“I want you to stop searching.””

“No.””

A pause.

Then Richard said:

“Then I’ll tell you the one thing nobody has told you.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

His voice became quieter.

“Your father didn’t die because of me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I gave him the poison.””

The room went silent.

“But someone else made sure he took it.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Richard laughed.

May you like

And then he whispered:

“The person you called Mom your entire life.””
