Chapter 8: The Betrayal We Never Saw Coming
Daniel Harrison stood in the doorway.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then my mother pulled her hand away from mine.
Not slowly.
Not gently.
Like she had touched something dangerous.
“Daniel.””
His face changed.
“Claire.””
I looked between them.
Confusion filled every part of me.
“You said Daniel could be trusted.””
My mother’s eyes stayed on him.
“I thought he could.””
The silence that followed felt like a knife.
Daniel stepped inside.
“Claire, you know that isn’t true.””
My mother looked away.
“Do I?””
I had never heard her speak like that.
Not angry.
Not scared.
Disappointed.
“Someone explain what is happening.””
Neither answered.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“Lily, your mother has been through a lot.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Apparently everyone has been through a lot except me.””
That shut him down.
My mother looked at me.
“You deserve the truth.””
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled.
“I was not hiding from Victor.””
I waited.
“I was hiding from Daniel.””
The room went silent.
I felt my stomach drop.
Daniel’s face became serious.
“Claire, don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Tell her a version of the story that hurts her more than it helps.””
My mother shook her head.
“After everything, you still think you know what’s best.””
I stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Both looked at me.
“I’m done being the person everyone protects from the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
I pointed at Daniel.
“You.””
Then my mother.
“You.””
My voice shook.
“You both decided what I was allowed to know.””
I looked at Daniel.
“So tell me.””
He stayed silent.
“Did you betray my mother?””
His answer took too long.
That was enough.
My heart sank.
“I can’t believe you.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“I never betrayed her.””
“Then why can’t you answer?””
“Because the truth is complicated.””
I laughed.
“Of course it is.””
My mother looked at me.
“Lily, listen.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“I need answers, not another person telling me to wait.””
Daniel took a step forward.
“Your mother found evidence against Victor Hale.””
“I know.””
“She also found evidence against someone else.””
“Who?””
His eyes moved to the floor.
That scared me.
“Daniel.””
He finally looked at me.
“Me.””
My mother closed her eyes.
I felt like the room tilted.
“What?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Twenty-seven years ago, I was involved in decisions that hurt people.””
My mother whispered:
“He wasn’t the monster Victor was.””
Daniel looked at her.
“But I wasn’t innocent.””
I stared at him.
“So you lied.””
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You hid things.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Daniel looked at my mother.
“Of losing everything.””
I shook my head.
“My whole life was destroyed because powerful people were afraid of losing things.””
The room became quiet.
Then my mother reached under her pillow.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew this day would come.””
She handed it to me.
My name was written on the front.
Again.
Lily.
My hands trembled.
“Who is this from?””
She looked at me.
“Your father.””
I stopped breathing.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the first sentence made my knees weak.
*Lily, if you are reading this, then your mother failed to keep you away from the truth.*
I kept reading.
*I know you probably hate me. You have every right to.*
My eyes burned.
*But I need you to know something. I never left you.*
I looked up.
My mother was crying.
Daniel was silent.
I continued.
*The person who took me away from you was not Victor Hale.*
A cold feeling spread through my body.
The next line was underlined.
*It was someone who has been standing beside you all these years.*
I looked at Daniel.
Then my mother.
Then the door.
Because suddenly I realized something.
May you like
The person who destroyed my family…
Was someone I had trusted.
