Chapter 2: The Man at the Door
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then someone whispered.
“His daughter?””
I looked around, confused.
Because I had never met Daniel Harrison before.
And I definitely wasn’t his daughter.
Rebecca stared at him like she had seen a ghost.
“Daniel, what are you doing here?””
Her voice was completely different now.
No anger.
No confidence.
Only fear.
Daniel walked closer.
“I should ask you the same thing.””
Rebecca forced a laugh.
“This is a misunderstanding.””
“Is it?””
His eyes moved to my cheek.
I wanted to say something.
I wanted to explain everything.
But suddenly my voice disappeared.
Daniel looked at me.
“Are you okay?””
I nodded automatically.
“Yes.””
It was a lie.
My cheek hurt.
My pride hurt more.
He noticed.
“You don’t have to protect anyone in this room.””
That sentence almost broke me.
Because for the past five years, protecting everyone else had become my habit.
Protecting my younger brother.
Protecting my mother.
Protecting myself from admitting how tired I was.
Rebecca stepped between us.
“Daniel, don’t make a scene.””
He looked at her.
“A scene?””
His voice remained calm.
“You slapped a restaurant employee because of a wine stain.””
“It wasn’t just a wine stain.””
“No?””
Rebecca opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Her husband looked embarrassed.
“Daniel, maybe we should discuss this privately.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“Michael, I agree.””
Then he looked back at Rebecca.
“But first, she owes Lily an apology.””
My heart stopped.
He knew my name.
Rebecca noticed too.
“How do you know her?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at me.
“Lily, have we met before?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
His expression changed slightly.
Like he was remembering something.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Your mother’s name was Claire Carter.””
My stomach dropped.
I hadn’t heard my mother’s name spoken by a stranger in years.
“How do you know my mother?””
The restaurant was silent again.
Daniel looked at me carefully.
“Because Claire was one of the bravest people I ever knew.””
Rebecca suddenly interrupted.
“Daniel.””
There was panic in her voice.
He ignored her.
“Your mother worked for my company twenty-seven years ago.””
I stared at him.
“My mother was a secretary.””
“She was much more than that.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Like a door I had never known existed was slowly opening.
Daniel reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
He held it toward me.
I hesitated before taking it.
The picture showed a younger Daniel standing beside a woman.
My mother.
My fingers tightened around the photo.
“Where did you get this?””
“She gave it to me.””
“When?””
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“Before Rebecca destroyed the evidence.””
Rebecca’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel finally turned his full attention to her.
“I’m talking about the agreement you thought nobody knew about.””
My heart raced.
“What agreement?””
Nobody answered.
Michael looked uncomfortable.
Rebecca looked terrified.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Lily, there are things your mother never told you.””
I stared at him.
“What things?””
Before he could respond, Rebecca stepped forward.
“This has nothing to do with her.””
Daniel looked at her.
“It has everything to do with her.””
The restaurant manager finally appeared, clearly having realized something serious was happening.
“Mr. Harrison, is everything all right?””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
Then he pointed toward me.
“Your employee was assaulted.””
The manager’s face changed.
“Assaulted?””
Rebecca immediately spoke.
“It was just a misunderstanding.””
“No,” Daniel said.
His voice was quiet.
“And everyone here saw exactly what happened.””
Several customers nodded.
For the first time that night, I didn’t feel alone.
Rebecca looked around the room.
She realized people were no longer watching me.
They were watching her.
She grabbed her purse.
“We’re leaving.””
Daniel stepped aside.
“Go ahead.””
Rebecca stopped.
“You’re not going to do anything?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I already did.””
She frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“It means Lily finally deserves to know why her mother spent her entire life hiding the truth about her father.””
My breath caught.
“My father?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because at that exact moment, Rebecca’s phone rang.
She looked down at the screen.
And whatever she saw made her hands begin to shake.
“Who is it?”” Michael asked.
Rebecca slowly lifted her eyes toward me.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“It’s impossible…”
