Chapter 11: The Letter Ethan Left Behind
I held the envelope in my hand.
A simple piece of paper.
That was all.
But somehow it felt heavier than every secret I had uncovered.
Thomas stood across from me.
My mother stood behind him.
Daniel stood beside me.
Three people who had known the truth.
Three people who had allowed me to live without it.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one page.
The handwriting was neat.
Controlled.
Unlike my mother’s emotional letters.
The first line stopped me.
*Lily,*
*If you are reading this, I hope you are old enough to understand why I left.*
I felt anger immediately.
Why I left.
Not why I disappeared.
Not why I was taken.
Why I left.
I continued.
*I know what people will tell you. They will say I abandoned you. They will say I was weak. They will say I chose myself over you.*
My hands tightened.
*But the truth is that I chose you every single day.*
I looked up.
Thomas watched me carefully.
I kept reading.
*When Victor Hale discovered our investigation, he threatened your mother. When Thomas made his deal with him, I realized something important. The people hunting us were not trying to hurt me.*
A pause.
Then:
*They were trying to reach you.*
My breathing slowed.
*You were the only thing your mother and I had that they couldn’t control.*
The hospital became silent.
I continued.
*I left because I knew they would use me to find you.*
My eyes burned.
*I wanted to come back. Every day.*
A tear fell onto the paper.
*But coming back would have brought danger with me.*
I looked at my mother.
She was crying.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
*Lily, there is one thing your mother never told you.*
My heart tightened.
*The person who betrayed us was not Thomas.*
I stopped.
Slowly, I looked at Thomas.
He looked almost relieved.
Not guilty.
Relieved.
I kept reading.
*Thomas made terrible choices. But someone else convinced him to do it. Someone who knew exactly how to manipulate him.*
My eyes moved down.
The next sentence felt impossible.
*That person was Daniel Harrison.*
I dropped the letter.
The room went silent.
Nobody moved.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked devastated.
“No.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Lily…”
“No.””
I stepped away.
“You lied again.””
“I can explain.””
“Everyone always says that.””
My mother looked shocked.
“Ethan wrote that?””
I picked up the letter.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head slowly.
“No.””
Thomas spoke.
“Because Ethan never trusted anyone completely.””
I looked at him.
“Not even my mother?””
“Not even himself.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“I did something wrong.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“What?””
“I made a deal with Thomas.””
My stomach dropped.
“What kind of deal?””
He looked older suddenly.
Tired.
Broken.
“I helped him access company information.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought I was protecting my family.””
I stared.
“You mean Rebecca?””
He nodded.
“My company was falling apart. Victor had power. Thomas offered a way out.””
“And Ethan?””
Daniel looked down.
“He found out.””
The pieces began moving.
“So Ethan threatened to expose you.””
“Yes.””
“And you tried to stop him.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My mother whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“You were always good at making yourself the victim.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“And you were always good at pretending you had no choice.””
Their argument became background noise.
Because my mind was stuck on one thing.
My father didn’t disappear because he left.
He disappeared because he discovered betrayal.
But one question remained.
If Daniel was responsible…
Why did my mother trust him?
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Don’t trust anyone in that room.*
Attached was a photograph.
My hands went cold.
Because the picture showed my father.
Alive.
May you like
And standing beside someone I recognized.
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
