Chapter 9: The Mistake That Started It All
The words hung in the room.
I stared at Michael.
“What do you mean you were the reason?””
He sat down slowly.
“I never wanted this.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
Jordan stood quietly near the hallway.
Listening.
Learning things no child should have to hear.
Michael looked at him.
“I need to apologize.””
Jordan didn’t respond.
Michael continued.
“Four months ago, before the scholarship was announced, I met with Principal Hayes.””
My expression hardened.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted information.””
“About what?””
“My son’s chances.””
The room went silent.
Michael looked ashamed.
“I asked Hayes if there was any way to help my son get noticed.””
Jordan looked hurt.
“So you asked him to beat me?””
“No.””
Michael immediately shook his head.
“No. I asked for advice.””
“But you went to him.””
“Yes.””
“And then he targeted me.””
Michael looked down.
“Yes.””
That answer hurt.
Because it was honest.
And honesty sometimes hurts more than lies.
“I made a selfish choice,” Michael said.
“I was worried about my son. I was frustrated. I thought asking questions couldn’t hurt anyone.””
I crossed my arms.
“And when you realized it could?””
“I tried to fix it.””
“How?””
He reached into his bag again.
This time, he pulled out a notebook.
“I recorded everything.””
Officer Bennett looked surprised.
“You recorded conversations?””
Michael nodded.
“Not all of them. But enough.””
He opened the notebook.
Inside were dates.
Times.
Names.
Notes.
“I knew something was wrong when Hayes told me Jordan’s scholarship could be reconsidered.””
Claire looked at him.
“You knew before the public announcement?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you warn Rachel?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You thought you could handle it?””
He nodded sadly.
“That was my mistake.””
Jordan finally spoke.
“You let them hurt me because you were trying to help your son.””
Michael looked like those words physically wounded him.
“Yes.””
Jordan looked away.
“I trusted you.””
Michael’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
The room stayed quiet.
Then Officer Bennett opened the notebook.
“We need to know what else happened.””
Michael pointed to one page.
“This was the first meeting.””
The date was four months earlier.
Before the scholarship.
Before everything.
Officer Bennett read the notes.
Then stopped.
“What?””
Michael looked at him.
“Read the last line.””
Officer Bennett did.
His face changed.
He turned the notebook toward us.
The final sentence said:
“Hayes says Jordan is only the first student they need removed.””
I felt a chill.
“The first?””
Michael nodded.
“That’s why I knew this was bigger.””
Claire looked confused.
“Bigger than one scholarship?””
“Yes.””
Michael looked at the documents.
“The scholarship program exposes schools that manipulate student rankings.””
Officer Bennett understood.
“They weren’t just trying to help one child.””
“No.””
Michael’s voice became quiet.
“They were protecting a system.””
A system.
A word that sounded too large.
Too impossible.
But then Claire opened another file.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
She stared at the screen.
“I found the scholarship committee’s internal records.””
“What about them?””
She clicked a document.
“This isn’t a student list.””
The screen showed payments.
Transfers.
Contracts.
My heart sank.
Officer Bennett leaned closer.
Then he whispered:
“This isn’t corruption inside a school.””
He looked at us.
“This goes much higher.””
Before anyone could respond, Claire received another notification.
She opened it.
Her face changed instantly.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Rachel…”
“What is it?””
She turned the screen around.
It was an official announcement.
The scholarship committee had released a statement.
But the statement wasn’t defending Jordan.
It was announcing an investigation into him.
The headline read:
“Scholarship Winner Accused of Academic Fraud.””
Jordan stared at the screen.
His face went white.
“They’re still saying I cheated.””
Officer Bennett grabbed his coat.
“Then we need to move quickly.””
Michael looked terrified.
“Because now?””
Officer Bennett nodded.
“Now they’re not just trying to remove Jordan.””
May you like
He looked at me.
“They’re trying to destroy his reputation before he can fight back.””
