Chapter 12: The Witness Who Knew Everything
The woman arrived the next morning.
Her name was Dr. Evelyn Parker.
She was a former member of the scholarship committee.
The first thing I noticed was her expression.
She looked exhausted.
Like someone who had been carrying a secret alone for too long.
She sat across from us in a quiet café.
Jordan sat beside me.
Dr. Parker looked at him.
“I owe you an apology.””
Jordan looked confused.
“For what?””
“Because I saw what was happening.””
The words shocked me.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I suspected.””
My anger rose.
“You suspected my son was being targeted?””
She lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you stop it?””
She took a deep breath.
“Because I underestimated how far they would go.””
That answer wasn’t enough.
Not for me.
But then she opened her bag.
Inside was a thick folder.
“I kept copies.””
Officer Bennett looked at the documents.
“Copies of what?””
“The original scholarship evaluations.””
She placed them on the table.
“Every student was reviewed independently.””
She opened the first page.
Jordan’s name appeared.
Score: 98%.
Recommendation: Outstanding.
Then she opened another page.
A revised version.
Score: 84%.
Recommendation: Questionable.
The changes were obvious.
Someone had rewritten his future.
Dr. Parker continued.
“When I questioned the changes, I was removed from the committee.””
“Who removed you?””
She looked at me.
“Richard Whitmore.””
The name again.
The person behind everything.
“Why?””
“Because I found the pattern.””
She placed more files on the table.
“Over five years, students connected to certain families received advantages.””
Claire frowned.
“Favoritism.””
“Yes.””
“But why Jordan?””
Dr. Parker looked at him.
“Because your son’s score was impossible to ignore.””
Jordan looked down.
“What does that mean?””
“It means they couldn’t give the scholarship to someone else without changing the rules.””
Dr. Parker smiled sadly.
“So they changed the story instead.””
My son was quiet.
Then he asked:
“Did you think I cheated?””
The question seemed to hurt her.
“No.””
“Then why didn’t you say anything?””
She looked at him.
“Because I was afraid.””
Jordan nodded slowly.
I could see he understood.
Adults were afraid too.
But that didn’t make the pain disappear.
Officer Bennett examined the documents.
“This is enough to reopen the investigation.””
Dr. Parker shook her head.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because there’s one more piece.””
She reached into the folder.
A final document.
“This is the original scholarship committee vote.””
I looked at it.
Five signatures.
Five approvals.
Jordan had won unanimously.
Then I saw something.
One signature had been added later.
A sixth name.
A person who wasn’t on the committee.
I looked up.
“That’s impossible.””
Dr. Parker nodded.
“Exactly.””
Claire leaned closer.
“Who signed it?””
Dr. Parker looked at the page.
Then she said the name.
And every person at the table froze.
Because the person who altered the final scholarship decision wasn’t Richard Whitmore.
It wasn’t Principal Hayes.
It wasn’t Mrs. Whitmore.
It was someone we had never suspected.
May you like
Someone who had been standing beside us the entire time.
Someone Jordan trusted.
