Chapter 6: The Warning
The message stayed on Claire’s phone screen for several seconds.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
It was only a sentence.
A few words.
But those words carried a threat.
Stop digging.
Or Jordan will lose more than a scholarship.
Officer Bennett immediately reached for his phone.
“Send me a screenshot.””
Claire did.
“Do not respond.””
“I wasn’t going to.””
“Good.””
He looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, has anyone contacted you?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Anyone watching your home?””
“I don’t know.””
The thought made me look toward the window.
For the first time, our apartment didn’t feel safe.
Jordan noticed.
“Mom?””
I forced a smile.
“It’s okay.””
But he knew me too well.
“No, it’s not.””
I sat beside him.
“Jordan—”
“They’re still trying to hurt me.””
His voice was quiet.
Not angry.
Just tired.
I didn’t know what to say.
Because he was right.
The people who had embarrassed him in front of his classmates weren’t finished.
The district investigation continued.
Mrs. Whitmore was placed on administrative leave.
Principal Hayes was removed from his position while officials reviewed the evidence.
But the deeper investigators went, the more complicated it became.
Three days later, Investigator Mitchell called us back.
“We found financial records.””
I sat across from her in the district office.
“What kind of records?””
She looked serious.
“Payments.””
My stomach tightened.
“From who?””
She opened a folder.
“We’re still confirming details.””
Officer Bennett leaned forward.
“Details about what?””
She placed a document on the table.
“Mrs. Whitmore received money from an outside account.””
I looked at the page.
The name wasn’t familiar.
“Who sent it?””
Investigator Mitchell paused.
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
Jordan sat quietly beside me.
He had stopped asking questions.
That scared me more than anything.
A child should ask questions.
A child should be curious.
Not afraid of the answers.
After the meeting, Claire walked with us outside.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“I should have noticed sooner.””
I shook my head.
“You protected my son.””
She looked down.
“I only turned on the camera.””
I stopped walking.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“That camera gave Jordan a voice.””
She smiled slightly.
Then her expression changed.
“Actually…”
“What?””
“There’s something I didn’t tell the investigator yet.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
She opened her laptop.
“I checked the camera backup again.””
“And?””
“The footage from Room 208 wasn’t the only thing recovered.””
She clicked a folder.
Inside were several videos.
Different dates.
Different times.
I stared.
“How many?””
“Six.””
Officer Bennett stepped closer.
“What’s on them?””
Claire hesitated.
“Meetings.””
“Between who?””
She looked at me.
“Mrs. Whitmore and Principal Hayes.””
My hands went cold.
“Talking about Jordan?””
“Yes.””
“Then why haven’t we seen them?””
Claire swallowed.
“Because there’s one more person in the videos.””
A strange feeling filled my chest.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she opened the oldest recording.
The date appeared.
It was from four months earlier.
Before Jordan won the scholarship.
Before the accusations.
Before the humiliation.
The video loaded.
Mrs. Whitmore sat at her desk.
Principal Hayes sat across from her.
Then the door opened.
Someone walked inside.
Someone I recognized.
Someone whose name I never expected to see.
Jordan looked at the screen.
His face went completely pale.
May you like
Because the person who entered the room was not another teacher.
It was someone from our own family.
