Chapter 12: The Truth My Father Hid

I couldn’t hear anything after those words.

The room kept moving.

People were talking.

The wind pushed against the windows.

Someone outside shouted.

But all I heard was my father.

*I started it.*

I looked at him.

“No.””

He closed his eyes.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You said it was planned.””

“It was.””

“You said Claire did it.””

“She was involved.””

“But you started it?””

My father looked older than he had a moment ago.

Not ten years older.

A lifetime.

“I started the fire because I thought it was the only way to destroy the evidence.””

Everyone went silent.

Richard smiled.

“There it is.””

I looked at him.

“What evidence?””

Richard answered.

“The evidence of what your father had done.””

My father turned toward him.

“You’re lying.””

Richard laughed.

“You always hated that word.””

Thomas stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Richard looked at Thomas.

“You still think you’re the hero?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Richard looked back at me.

“Your father wasn’t investigating us.””

My stomach twisted.

“He was part of us.””

I looked at my father.

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt more.

“Dad?””

He swallowed.

“I was.””

The word broke something inside me.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“For ten years.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was ashamed.””

Nobody spoke.

My father sat down.

“I built Carter Diner with people I trusted.””

He looked at Richard.

“And I ignored what they were doing.””

“What were they doing?””

He looked at the notebook.

“They were using the diner’s business records to hide illegal transactions.””

My face went numb.

“The diner?””

He nodded.

“The place you loved was being used for something terrible.””

Richard smiled.

“Your father found out too late.””

My father continued.

“When I discovered the truth, I tried to expose them.””

Claire interrupted.

“And that’s when everything fell apart.””

I looked at her.

“You knew.””

She nodded.

“I did.””

The honesty shocked me.

“I wanted to stop it.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I was afraid.””

I looked around the room.

Everyone had made choices.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had hurt someone.

But Maya…

Maya was the only innocent person there.

I looked at her.

She stood frozen near the wall.

Watching adults destroy each other with the truth.

I walked toward her.

“You okay?””

She shook her head.

Then signed:

“Why does everyone lie?””

I had no answer.

Because I had spent my entire life believing lies were supposed to protect people.

Now I knew sometimes they only protected the person telling them.

A loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

Richard looked annoyed.

“What now?””

The farmhouse door burst open.

Police officers rushed inside.

Everyone froze.

An officer shouted:

“Nobody move!””

My heart raced.

“How did they find us?””

The officer looked at me.

“Emma Carter?””

I nodded.

He stepped forward.

“We received evidence regarding a decade-old case.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“What evidence?””

The officer looked at Thomas.

Then at the notebook.

“Enough to reopen the Carter Diner fire investigation.””

Richard slowly backed away.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Then his eyes moved toward Claire.

And she understood.

They weren’t afraid of the police.

They were afraid of each other.

Richard whispered:

“You told them.””

Claire looked shocked.

“No.””

Richard smiled coldly.

“Then who did?””

Everyone looked around.

My phone buzzed.

Again.

Unknown number.

I didn’t want to answer.

But I did.

A voice spoke immediately.

“Emma.””

My blood froze.

Because I knew it.

My father knew it.

Thomas knew it.

Everyone did.

It was Laura.

But Laura was standing right in front of me.

The voice continued:

“You found the truth.””

I stared at Laura.

Her face turned pale.

The voice said:

“But you still don’t know the biggest lie.””

The call ended.

Slowly, everyone looked at Laura.

Because there was only one question left.

May you like

If Laura was here…

Who had just called me?
