Chapter 10: The Woman in the Blue Car
Maya looked at Laura like the world had just broken apart.
For the first time since I met her, she wasn’t afraid of a stranger.
She was afraid of someone she loved.
Laura stood near the doorway, holding the notebook against her chest.
The same notebook Maya had risked everything to protect.
The same notebook that had led us here.
“Why?”” Maya signed.
Her hands moved slowly.
Not angry.
Not wild.
Just hurt.
Laura’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know what you’re asking.””
Maya shook her head.
She pointed at herself.
Then at Laura.
Then made a motion like a heart breaking.
Even I understood.
Why did you betray me?
Laura looked down.
“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””
My father stepped forward.
“You brought Claire here.””
Laura flinched.
“I had no choice.””
Claire laughed softly from the darkness.
“That’s what everyone says.””
The lights flickered back on.
Claire stood near the window, watching everyone like she was observing a game.
I hated how calm she looked.
Like she had already won.
“Emma,” Laura said.
“Please listen.””
I stared at her.
“You were the woman Maya trusted.””
Laura looked at Maya.
“I still care about her.””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
One word.
A silent voice.
But it carried more pain than anything I had heard.
Laura looked away.
My father moved closer to me.
“Emma, there’s something you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“Another secret?””
His face fell.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
He continued.
“Laura was never working for Claire.””
Thomas frowned.
“What?””
Claire smiled.
“Finally.””
Everyone looked at her.
She walked forward slowly.
“Daniel always did love complicated stories.””
My father ignored her.
“Laura was undercover.””
I stared at him.
“Undercover?””
He nodded.
“She was helping me collect evidence.””
Laura lifted the notebook.
“This.””
Maya looked confused.
Then angry.
I turned to Laura.
“Then why did you let her think you betrayed her?””
Laura’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Claire was watching.””
Claire’s expression changed slightly.
The first crack.
The first sign that she wasn’t completely in control.
Laura continued.
“She knew Maya saw something. She knew Maya had the notebook. If I acted like I was protecting Maya, Claire would have killed her.””
Maya stared at her.
Laura stepped closer.
“I’m sorry.””
Maya didn’t move.
“I wanted to tell you.””
Laura’s voice broke.
“But I couldn’t.””
The room went silent.
Then Thomas spoke.
“She’s telling the truth.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed toward Claire.
“Because Claire never knew Laura had copied the evidence.””
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“What?””
Thomas smiled slightly.
For the first time, he looked confident.
“The notebook isn’t the only copy.””
Claire’s calm expression disappeared.
My father looked at Thomas.
“You found it?””
Thomas nodded.
“Years ago.””
Claire took a step forward.
“You’ve been lying to me.””
Thomas laughed quietly.
“Now you understand how it feels.””
The tension in the room shifted.
Claire wasn’t untouchable anymore.
She was angry.
And angry people made mistakes.
She looked at me.
“You really believe all these people?””
I didn’t answer.
She pointed at my father.
“He lied to you for ten years.””
Then Thomas.
“He worked for me.””
Then Laura.
“She let a child believe she was abandoned.””
Every word landed.
Because every word had some truth.
Claire saw my hesitation.
She stepped closer.
“Emma, I’m the only person who stayed.””
My father’s voice was quiet.
“Because you wanted control.””
Claire looked at him.
“You think I wanted this?””
Her voice cracked.
“I lost everything too.””
Nobody spoke.
For the first time, I saw something behind her anger.
Pain.
But it didn’t erase what she had done.
A person could suffer.
A person could be hurt.
And still hurt others.
I understood that now.
Claire looked at the notebook.
“You have no idea what’s inside.””
I held her gaze.
“Then tell me.””
She smiled.
“No.””
The farmhouse suddenly filled with a loud sound.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
Claire looked toward the table.
Not her phone.
Mine.
I picked it up.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
A voice whispered:
“Emma.””
My blood ran cold.
Because it wasn’t my father.
It wasn’t Claire.
It wasn’t Thomas.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been listening.
“You’re all looking in the wrong place.””
I tightened my grip.
“Who is this?””
The voice answered:
“The person who knows why your father really disappeared.””
The call ended.
Thomas looked at me.
“What did they say?””
I slowly lowered the phone.
“They said…”
I looked around the room.
“They know why my father disappeared.””
My father went pale.
May you like
Because he understood something before anyone else.
“They found us.””
