Chapter 11: The Secret Beneath the Fire

The farmhouse became a prison within seconds.

Everyone was suddenly watching every window.

Every doorway.

Every shadow.

The person on the phone had known exactly where we were.

That meant one thing.

Someone had followed us.

“We need to leave,” Thomas said.

Nobody argued.

Even Claire.

That scared me.

Because if Claire was afraid, whoever was coming was worse.

My father grabbed the notebook.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“We don’t leave without this.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Daniel.””

“This is why everything happened.””

He opened the notebook.

“There’s something in here that explains everything.””

Claire stared at him.

“You still think the truth will save you.””

My father looked at her.

“No.””

Then he looked at me.

“But Emma deserves to know.””

I wanted to say I didn’t.

I wanted to tell him I had heard enough.

But that wasn’t true.

The worst part about secrets was that once you found one, you wanted every answer.

My father opened the notebook to the final pages.

“There was a fire before the diner fire.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He looked at the pages.

“An investigation office. A place where records were stored.””

Thomas nodded.

“Claire destroyed it.””

Claire’s face hardened.

“That was not my decision.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked away.

My father continued.

“She wasn’t alone.””

I felt a chill.

“What do you mean?””

He turned the notebook toward me.

At the bottom of the page were several names.

Not missing people.

Not victims.

Partners.

People who helped.

I scanned the list.

Then stopped.

One name.

A name I recognized.

Someone I had never suspected.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Thomas.

Then Laura.

Then my father.

Finally Laura whispered:

“Your uncle.””

The room spun.

“My uncle?””

My father nodded slowly.

“Your mother’s brother.””

I laughed in disbelief.

“No.””

My uncle had died years ago.

A heart attack.

Another simple story.

Another lie.

“Emma,” my father said.

“He was involved from the beginning.””

I shook my head.

“He loved our family.””

My father looked heartbroken.

“That’s what made him dangerous.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door.

Everyone froze.

Thomas moved toward the window.

Then stepped back.

“Three vehicles.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“They’re here.””

I looked at her.

“You know who?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

The front door shook.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice called from outside.

“Claire.””

Everyone froze.

The voice was familiar.

Not to me.

But to her.

Claire looked terrified.

The door opened slowly.

And a man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

Calm eyes.

He looked around the room.

Then smiled.

“Daniel.””

My father went completely still.

The man looked at me.

“And you must be Emma.””

My stomach dropped.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it before.

In family photographs.

At holidays.

At birthdays.

Standing beside my parents.

My uncle.

The man everyone said had died years ago.

He smiled.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

I couldn’t speak.

My father whispered his name.

“Richard.””

Uncle Richard looked around.

“You always were stubborn, Daniel.””

Thomas moved forward.

Richard immediately looked at him.

“Still cleaning up messes?””

Thomas froze.

Richard knew him.

Everyone knew everyone.

A lifetime of secrets suddenly stood in front of me.

Richard looked at the notebook.

“That belongs to me.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

He smiled.

“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””

I held it tighter.

“Then explain.””

Richard sighed.

“I suppose you deserve that.””

He looked at my father.

“Tell her.””

My father didn’t move.

Richard smiled.

“Tell her why the fire started.””

Silence.

Then my father looked at me.

And the pain in his eyes told me everything.

May you like

The truth was worse than I imagined.

“I started it.””
